You should have been around 20 years ago Liam!

Honestly the Scottish soul scene back then was second to none

Anyway, I can't disagree, all great DJ's - but hardly 'up and coming'. All fairly well established imo.

Agreed Joan...Glenrothes etc.... & (Irish) Phil Shields,as Liam said is fab (even if established)

Out of all the venues I have been to over the years, Shotts is the one I would love to experience all over again given the chance.

I'd definitely like to know more about the guys/girls up, up, up north...

Maybe Sebastian or Kristoffer can let us know wich are their favourite Nordic Dj's...Oslo Soul Nights always look quite interesting and, from what i see in the pictures of their parties, we have kind of similar crowd/vibe on the dancefloor. Must say that ours is not a "conoisseurs" venue, we are more than happy to have all kinds of hip people there...we don't want to "keep the faith", we want to spread it... .We don't believe in preaching for the converts. Also, we're interested in people that are able to keep a dancefloor busy just by the quality of their tunes and their ability to work a dancefloor...and, in this respect, all the guest Dj's we've brough here have ended up their nights having a big round of applause!

Edu, 7th of april is tuesday  i know you mean february.. hehe.. cant wait!!

Hi!

It's a bi-monthly soul allnighter held in Barcelona, next one will be on the 7th of April, with SEBASTIAN FONZEUS (Sweden), YANN VATISTE (France/UK) and RICARD PRIETO (Barcelona). I run it along with Cristina Alonso, also organiser of THE BOILER R&B parties in BCN.

Our musical policy is totally across the board, from R&B to soulful house, but focusing a bit more on the modern side of things...Here you have the reviews, playlists and photos of the last MOVIN' ON editions:

2 djs that have stood out for me last year are Dr Pickes, his music aint standing still and just keeps getting better and better

Also Tim Smithers who i have had the privilege of hearing a couple of times lately and he has some tunes but is no spring chicken though  sorry Tim laugh.gif

and anyone else who has the balls to play off the beaten track

Bearsy

.

. If I had to name two D.J.s that have favourably stood out down south over the past year, then these two are the ones I would nominate.

.

. During any set of Northern Soul, I'm pretty much happy if I get to like say about 25% ~ 30% of whatever is being played. Yet when I heard Dr.Pickles play at Bournemouth University last year, nearly all of the sounds he delivered had something of quality within them. They weren't necessarily ground breaking rarities, just solid underplayed soulful numbers that I couldn't fail to appreciate.

As far as up and coming. I think this guy is already there, judging by the many venues where his name has appeared.

.

. Like Bearsy said, Tim Smithers is no spring chicken. So is he up and coming? Or is it that he's a lesser known D.J. that deserves wider acclaim? He certainly needs to be heard more often further afield from his home turf. When I've attended the odd rare soul night, I've been invariably disappointed, usually hearing sounds that just don't cut it compared to much of what came out in the golden era of the early seventies up north.

. Now this guy does play some rare soul, amongst some of the solid known stuff he uses from his box. Some of it, as you would expect with anyones tastes, doesn't quite hit the mark and yet there is so much that he plays that does hit the sweet spot. I've heard him play quite alot over the past couple of years and still his sets never become stale. For he kepts introducing plenty of new very danceable beat sounds, comparable to the old stompers, that would energize any dancefloor.

. Maybe it is time that Tim got a few sessions in The Midlands and up north. Where he would be certainly appreciated by any discerning crowd that appreciates solid dance music.

I agree, but as you know Tim doesnt travel, in fact makes quite a point of not needing to travel, so even if asked Im not sure he would agree to DJ outside of the area. The other side of that is, most of the people attending nights on the South Coast very rarely go any where else at all & certainly very rarely, if ever attend Allnighters, so whilst I agree that on the South Coast these guys are doing the business, the punters have very little else to compare with. Having said all of that I think Tim has done some great sets recently & very worthy of a mention.

i think the whole ethos with DR PICKLES is the fact that deep down the guy is a dancer, and i dont mean a little shuffle (like me) at the edge of the floor, i mean, he is full on dancefloor action all night long.

my point being that chris djs for dancers and not for collectors or chin scratchers, he has a mean collection of dancefloor soul, which, forgive me if i'm wrong, is what its all about. he will always be welcome either behind or the decks or on the floor at any soul night near me...

any promoters reading this should take note, punters pay to come in and dance, you could do a lot worse than DR P...

big up chris..see you on the 24th!

Thanks mate, but there are loads of people in the south playing something a little different, Steve C, Dave Abbott, Jonah and your good self to name but a few. [ Yes Bearsy your not as old as me, but your certainly as BOLD as me in playing your records and your lack of hair :(

I have been saying for some time that we need a little Nighter in Portsmouth/Southampton or the South Coast area to allow some of the great DJ's & collectors locally the opportunity to air thier wares on a regular basis. We will never have a huge Nighter down here, apart from anything else there is not the support for a night that will provide something a little different, but a small, intimate club, that holds a couple of hundred, held every other month or even quarterly could work. I have been looking for such a venue for some time, but cant find anything quite right, the music has to be of prime importance, but the venue will make or break it, ANYONE who knows of a venue that would be suitable for such a venture in the area, please get in touch, Im quite prepared to promote it or if anyone has any ideas also co promote, so lets get the likes of Tim, Steve C, Dave Abbott, Simon Preston, Jonah & others spinning at one cool venue regularly, you never know, we may even tempt a few travellers aswell, I did it before with Newbury & we can do it again, despite the glut of average events all over the country there is room for a quality Nighter down these parts. Im prepared to stick my neck out, but I genuinely need help to find that special place to truly rock the souls of the South Coast Massive again & get the guys with the tunes a regular gig & to dig even deeper to entertain us. I wait in anticipation.

 yeah but Steve C & Mr Abbott are really old like Russ and yourself but are well known in the scene and have a proven pedigree but unlike yourself although really old and balder than me you are relatively unknown to the masses but you have the tuneage to stand behind any decks and hold your own with many of the big name djs imho of course biggrin.gif so thats why you could qualify as up and coming i suppose :)

Russ the idea of a quality nighter down south is mouth watering to say the least and to hear the likes of yourself. Dave. Steve, Jonah and Tim giving it large 3 or 4 times a year would be awsome so if i can help in any way it would be a pleasure cos after all someone has to sit on the door and take all the money biggrin.gif

It can be done mate............we just need solidarity & a great outlook like ya fine self, we all do the door & if necessary clean the poopers n sweep the floor before we lock up in the morning & hey, as well as some tasty guests, there's more than enough room for youngsters like ya self who really inspire us old uns, thank you for your support mate & keep ya ears n eyes open for a suitable venue in your neck of the woods, a little 100 Club would do fine, not that Im asking for much.......... see ya next week at the 100 Club ???.

He's only been DJing for 25 years or more so yeah he's coming on as a DJ he's a quick learner :P

....but seriously this blokes knowledge of a good soul choon is second to none. I have known him since school when he first started collecting and I would give my right arm for his record collection now. Allways turning up stuff that never fails to deliver.

. My sentiments exactly. D.J.ing is about entertainment and whatever floats the crowds boat and gets them into the dance music. It's different strokes for different people. Tim & Dr. pickles have certainly got it for me when it comes to underplayed soul sounds, which fit nicely in with the known classics they play, which is essential for any successful soul night.

Great post Russ,

Totally agree with what you're saying.Have been looking for a venue for an alldayer down in Bournemouth area but without much success.Would be willing to have a chat about allnighter venue if you're coming to Uni on Feb 14th to hear Dave Abbott dj'ing.

It's because we 'invented' soul music!

https://www.willieruff.com/linesinging.html

That's very interesting, my grandfather on my Dad's side from Dunfermline went over to the U.S. on the boats from Scotland in the 20s to find work, he worked in the Detroit Motor industry. Word was sent that he died somehow when the wall street crash took effect.

Absolutely Dave.............its a constant source of embarrassment that I dont get to as many local do's as I would like, its not that I dont want to, its more that I'm kickin' the poop outa the Nighters right now............Im hoping to make Febs do, I know I'd love the Uni as I respect no end your tastes in soul Dave, so its not before time, the fact that DA is on wont put me off  ...........seriously, if I can tempt Jenny with a romantic night in Bournemouth for Valentines Night we'll be there. I'll PM you later any way Dave & if you have something in mind, I'll get on the blower at the weekend mate.

Thank you for replying Dave, looks like not everyone is as generous & enthusiastic as yourself when it comes to promoting in the area  .......there I go again, 'how to win friends & influence people'........

Keep at it mate
