Guest Posted May 2, 2005 Posted May 2, 2005 Why do event's have to pay for a few lines with no piccy (and quite often they are printed wrong!) yet someone selling a scooter get's a 'free' piccy and details?
Guest Posted May 3, 2005 Posted May 3, 2005 Yes, it's out at nearly every soul do, they do work very hard, just seems a little unfair on the advertising
Guest OntheScene Posted May 3, 2005 Posted May 3, 2005 Hi Janine, I would like to answer the questions you raise above and explain why we have decided to offer a free scooters for sale section. I'm sure once you have read below you will understand why we have done this. Firstly though I must correct you on your comment about the listings, where you say they are often printed wrong. We very seldom get things wrong in the guide, when you consider how many events are listed. But when we do we are the first to admit it which is why you will see MY notification of an error, not someone else's up here on Soul Source. It is very difficult trying to get information correct all of the time when you have approximately 200 promoters to contact each month with some being very difficult to get hold of. You also imply that we have charged the events where we have printed incorrect event information, this is just not true as we either reimburse or put a free listing into the next months issue. Please also be aware that we are sometimes given incorrect information by the promoters themselves or at worst they decide to cancel the event after we have gone to print. Examples of this include Vegas Shuffle and 70s Soul Gems to name just two. This doesn't look good for 'On the Scene' publicising events with incorrect information which is why we include a disclaimer suggesting people ring before travelling as OTS like Radio Times is only a GUIDE and is the reason why we include contact details for the events. With regards the scooters for sale section. It is only our second issue where we have offered scooters for sale. In the last issue there was just 6 scooters, where as the current issue has 20. Like any new idea you have to nurture it and get the relevant people interested and aware of it and the best way to do this is to offer it for FREE, creating in effect a loss leader. Which is what the scooter for sale section currently is in OTS. It is also worth noting the primary reason most people pick up OTS is for the gig guide and not the scooters for sale section. Therefore this and the fact that the bulk of OTS's are distributed at venues we feel it is not unfair to ask a little charge in return for this considering how many copies go out and how many people read it for this reason. You must also ask yourself how much it would or does cost to have flyers printed and would they be taken home and read in the same way as OTS? Plus how many events would that flyer get to and how many soulies would read it. Also please consider how much a classified advert costs in your local paper, and if it would have as much effect and reach as many soulies as a listing in On the Scene? It may seem unfair initially but I'm sure when you realise the reasoning behind it, which is; 'so we can keep the guide FREE and at the same time reach more soulies' it is actually the opposite. We don't make any bones about telling anyone who asks how we fund OTS. As we are proud to state that we do not charge the soulie a penny (and long may this continue) as we make our money from the adverts, classified or display that are enclosed within it. But we do have costs and these have to be paid for. I'm sorry if it is a bit long winded but hopefully has answered satisfactorily the questions you raised. Regards Paul (On the Scene)
Guest Posted May 3, 2005 Posted May 3, 2005 Yes, it's out at nearly every soul do, they do work very hard, just seems a little unfair on the advertising link Started out as looking good for the Northern Soul Scene, Gradually turning into another SCOOTER magazine. I know the 2 scenes are close, but On the Scene needs to decide if it is Aimed at the Northern Soul Scene or the Scooter Scene, Or Maybe bring out an alternative publicaction, Gill

Guest Posted May 3, 2005 Posted May 3, 2005 Thank you for the reply, but before I go any further I would like to say that I fully support the original concept of 'On the Scene' I fully understand how the mag is funded, and have no problem with this, no one is suggesting that you shouldn't charge for ad's, and again I agree you do distribute this mag very well, it's always at do's and I travel up and down the Country every weekend. My issue is that as you have agreed this is largely funded by the advertisements for 'Soul' events, therefore I don't see why free advertising for a different scene should be included. I also know of at least one promoter who stopped advertising his events in Scootering purely to stop scooterists attending his club, I was witness to the behaviour of these scooterists on the floor dancing with pints and then fighting. I personally do not believe that the soul and scooter scene are alike in any way par a few classic soul records. As for your comments on a classified adverts in local papers is not an issue as no promoters on the soul scene would dream of advertising their events in such a way just to fill a venue as it would eventually stop soulies attending them. Sorry but my question has not been answered, and are you making the people who advertise with you fully aware if On the Scene is being put out at scooter do's?

Reg Posted May 3, 2005 Posted May 3, 2005 Fair's fair the chap does a free events listing that's pretty comprehensive..I'm sure most of us use it. It's just a special offer he's got on at the moment which may lead to him getting more business in the future..if he doesn't carry on getting business he won't be able to afford to keep publishing it. And there are plenty of scooterists who aren't lager spilling,King Kurt dancing knuckleheads out there...me for one
Guest Brian Ellis Posted May 3, 2005 Posted May 3, 2005 (edited) Hmm, don't seem to remember you offering free advertising to people on the Soul scene when you started. link I can vouch for the fact that the first few issues of OTS did offer free advertising and the Broughton Wings Club was one of the first to take up the offer. Broughton has subsequently been happy to pay the small charge levied for future inserts. On a more general note, we have no issue with the charge; after all this is a high quality production, with an enthusiastic editor and a first class delivery system that 'gets' to the people we like to come to Broughton, to pay their entry fee and to guarantee the continuation of a quality soul nite in North East Wales Let's not knock someone who is doing something very positive for the soul scene. If anyone wants to pick fault why not run their own version (and perhaps try offering that free-of-charge)? Keep up the great work OTS. Brian Edited May 3, 2005 by Brian Ellis
Guest Posted May 3, 2005 Posted May 3, 2005 I have a copy of the first ever on the scene here infront of me, where does it say free advertising? Thanks
Chalky Posted May 3, 2005 Posted May 3, 2005 When did on the scene start. Advertised Lifeline nearly 18 months ago and it wasn't free, fiver per month if I remember rightly.
Guest Posted May 3, 2005 Posted May 3, 2005 I would appreciate it if people didn't slag of the scooter scene and turn this into something totally different from what I actually said. My quotes were from a very well respected promoter and my views on that particular night are mine, dancing with a pint and fighting is what happened, I have not slagged off the scootering scene or the people on it
Guest Posted May 3, 2005 Posted May 3, 2005 When did on the scene start. Advertised Lifeline nearly 18 months ago and it wasn't free, fiver per month if I remember rightly. link I have edition 1 here, September 2003
Simsy Posted May 3, 2005 Posted May 3, 2005 I work for a publishing company and if you want to advertise, you pay. Maybe if the scoots were brief lineage ads, it'd be different, but with pics, they should pay.
Chalky Posted May 3, 2005 Posted May 3, 2005 I have edition 1 here, September 2003 link 1st Lifeline January 2004, so first advertisement would have been the December 2003 issue.
Mace Posted May 3, 2005 Posted May 3, 2005 Seem to recall first edition was free lineage advertising, but was limited to Northwest only, not a national distribution then. Have got first copy here, and Alsager Civic was advertised without me sending info or paying - Paul must have filled events listing with info from flyers to promote the concept. Regards, Mace.

Without wishing to sound picky about this, a tip for future posting is to bear in mind the forum guidelines regarding posts that cause offence. Guest Trifle Posted May 4, 2005 Posted May 4, 2005 Oh dear. Brushes and tarring come to mind. IMHO Mr On The Scene should decide what he wants to do with the publication. The advertisers have a choice. The readers have a choice. I like it. I read it. I would happily advertise my scooter in there if I wanted to sell it.
Guest the dukester Posted May 4, 2005 Posted May 4, 2005 I also know of at least one promoter who stopped advertising his events in Scootering purely to stop scooterists attending his club, I was witness to the behaviour of these scooterists on the floor dancing with pints and then fighting. I personally do not believe that the soul and scooter scene are alike in any way par a few classic soul records. Oh dear, Stereotype is the word I think you are using here, I have been into Soul music since and djing since I was 14 (1973) been into scooters since 1976 and still ride one, both subjects I care about passionately, I dont think anyone said they are alike in anyway, (the words used were closely linked) which they are. Me and my mate run a successful soul night in the N East, EASINGTON WELFARE HALL and we have Scooterists attending, I cant recall an incident where there has been trouble with them?? (not saying there isnt trouble with them elsewhere) I dont think stopping the ad in Scoot mag will put an end to them coming, Their behaviour is a social problem not a scooter problem. As for the classic soul record link,..... myth (see thread on Top Ten Sounds, Sanford Park Scooter Rally) There are a lot of very knowledgable soul lovers on the scooter scene, had this argument years ago with the late TONY BANKS (god rest his soul) which nearly led to being featured on the Richard Searling Radio show, so we can put this to bed I think, and the next time I get asked for THE SNAKE/WHAT/NINE TIMES OUT OF TEN at a soul night, I will check to see if he/she is the owner of the scooter parked outside or just old soulies who've never had a scooter reliving their days of the Casino.

Guest in town Mikey Posted May 4, 2005 Posted May 4, 2005 I'm surprised there has been so much animosity caused by a simple thread. At least On The Scene, is a listing provided by the scene for the scene. If it comes from the Scootering fragment of the Northern Soul scene fine. It may well end up being more useful to scooterists, but the ones I have seen have been a really useful guide. Using the same principle Kavel and I used with in town. You can have all your events on one piece of paper and stuck by magnet onto the fridge door. You dont need to go home with the remenants of the Brazilian rainforest in your sky rocket. This is on a much bigger scale, and is professionally presented, so it is inevitable that the costs had to be covered by charging. (Ours was a rag tag list, that was put together on a shoe string to avoid that). Lets not knock everything hey.

Fair play to the On The Scene people but with the internet, newsgroups etc I don't see why anyone would pay for a little bit of text. Even if it is now in a nice little glossy mag format.

Andy BB - The New Untouchables charge money for people to get into their DOs, maybe they use part of that money towards production of their leafleture. Am I correct in assuming that On The Scene are just a soul venue advertising bunch and don't actually organise events? I get your point about making the people pay for it, but I think they know what they're doing. Promoters don't have to put an ad in there, but they do, perhaps because it does get good distribution. There are many free publications with the same concept (loot? yellow pages? ) Edited May 4, 2005 by Trifle
Guest Brian Ellis Posted May 4, 2005 Posted May 4, 2005 I'd have thought that you'd do the basic listings for free and then charge for full page ads and advertorial. link Why don't we let the guy make his own business decisions - no one here should be telling him what to do or what not to do with his business. There must be a significant level of cost to producing and distributing such a high quality glossy. And on top of that there needs to be a profit - this is a commercial world we live in, sorry! Perhaps when anyone makes a suggestion about how and at what level charges should be levied they should also give projections as to how their suggestion would improve the margins for the business. I run my own business - and if I was receiving the type of suggestions made here about how I should charge my clients then there is only one way the business would go - straight down the pan!! If you're a promoter and don't want to take out paid advertising with OTS then that's fine - it's your decision. But there seems to be plenty who find it worthwhile to pay. It's only the customer who has the right to negotiate prices with a supplier, not bystanders. No soulie, unless a promoter, has to pay anything for OTS - and so therefore has no right to make comment on commercial decisions made by the business owner. OK, if you want to comment on quality or content (as a reader) there's no problem with that, but let the business of pricing lie between supplier and customer. Sorry - rant over. Brian

mischief Posted May 4, 2005 Posted May 4, 2005 Behave yourselfs... I'm a scooterist i'm not a drunk... I don't get in fights... I feel I have a full respect of Northern Soul, and I dislike people who drink on the dance floor. I have a decent job (facilities manager in a solicitors) so how do I come in to your scumbag comment? Sorry I am really put out about this... if you don't want to read about scooters for sale, which I myself don't as there are already 5 in the garage at the moment.. turn over the page. I find some of the comments on here rude narrow minded and out of date. Scooter runs 15 years ago, we was all younger then. I always pick up on the scene.. scooter sales or not i'm not bothered as long as it has what i want from it..
Guest Andy BB Posted May 4, 2005 Posted May 4, 2005 Yep sorry. Badly written, was supposed to come across as a suggestion, not a criticism. Free listings = more listings = a more comprehensive magazine = more demand = increased circulation = more attractive to paying advertisers = more revenue? I never did finish my MBA mind you. Scooterists: last time I went to a rally was Camber Sands about four years ago and it hadn't changed all that much since my previous (non-Mod) rally in the mid 90s, which in turn had marginally improved since say Morecambe 1986 but the ratio of people having a good time/loving the music versus hammered loons causing trouble was still far far higher than at a Mod or Soul do. That said maybe something to do with me being one of about five people in a suit and tie... You only have to look at the grief we get on the Isle of Wight. Sulk sulk bla bla bla

Free listings = more listings = a more comprehensive magazine = more demand = increased circulation = more attractive to paying advertisers = more revenue? I never did finish my MBA mind you. link No problem! But if this scenario was to work the circulation would have to go up exponentially. Currently listings are £8 a shot; to make these free of charge in the hope that even more 'freebies' would come on board to make the magazine more comprehensive, giving it an increased circulation, in the hope of attracting more paying advertisers, to generate more revenue for the business, looks like pie in the sky to me Andy, I'm afraid. Maybe you should go back and complete your MBA - Business Costing module!!! Regards Brian
