Guest Posted December 20, 2008 Posted December 20, 2008 This is a mock up of the box i'm having made. The guy put this together to see if I thought it was ok before he makes the 'proper' one. I like it very much - and the price He is only charging me £25 so i asked if I could have two On the downside - They wont be ready til about February as his time to do 'odd jobs' is limited.
Guest Posted December 20, 2008 Posted December 20, 2008 looks good, is the lid detachable? Its a custom made job from my specifications - the design is taken from a box that was on sale on SS recently - only I expanded it to hold more records. The guy who is making it did suggest detachable, but I asked for strong hinges. I have a tendancy to take some records out of my box when playing and they end up all over the place. I thought the 'stay on' lid would make a good 'tray'.

Some detachable hinges more than strong enough. Be sure to show us the finished product in February, he might get a few orders

Kris Holmes Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 Those wooden boxes look like they will be pretty sweet. An alternative I have been using for a while is either toolboxes with the shelves removed or beauty cases with the compartments removed. Lockable, sturdy & smart looking. Below are a couple of pics closed & open of the two sizes I have & the last pic is two of the bigger ones after the latest 45 buying jaunt through the US. They are great to travel with as you can use the shoulder strap to free up your hands & they fit nicely under the seat in front of you on the plane. They are easily gutted of the inner shelves just by drilling out the rivets that hold them in place & then you are all set to go. Pretty cheap too, I think the smaller one was about $25 & the larger one was around $50.

NEV Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 Custom made - MARK II Detachable lid and lock I'm happy Mike ......you said you were having two made ?? Are they MATCH in boxes Seriously tho.....hope you used the right sort of paint and got a protective lining cos apparantly certain types of wood and paint, (in a confined space) can give off fumes ,which in time ROT vinyl

Guest Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 I've just taken all the records out and 'Fabreezed' the box
KevH Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 (edited) I've just taken all the records out and 'Fabreezed' the box .In a furniture shop near me i saw some interesting boxes in the window that looked just the right size for 45s'.They were like mini treasure chests(rounded lid, ironwork etc),that wouldn't look out of place in Pirates of the Carribean. Edited March 14, 2010 by KevH
NEV Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 I've just taken all the records out and 'Fabreezed' the box Fabreeze ...oh my gawd Mike ..now you've gone and done it big style!
Chalky Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 Seriously tho.....hope you used the right sort of paint and got a protective lining cos apparently certain types of wood and paint, (in a confined space) can give off fumes ,which in time ROT vinyl I doubt there is enough chemicals left in the paint once it has properly cured/dried to do any damage. Most modern paints are pretty safe these days (paints for everyday use off the shelf) and many of the dangerous chemicals no longer used (wouldn't advise drinking it though ). It would probably need something to react with as well to give off any fumes, i.e. excessive heat etc.. Many of the chemicals in paint evaporate in drying. I used to run a paint shop some of the paints we used could kill you in 20 minutes if didn't use ventilators, masks etc. My varnished wooden box isn't lined and it is 25 years old not done any damage to any records.

You should probably hold onto the test copy...will probably be worth more than the stock box you got.
Guest Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 Should have put the handles on the end or side of the boxes easier to lug about and they would stack on top of each other, just a idea.....maybe for mrk III.
