I remember when this first came out, it was the antithesis of everything (for me) northern stood for. Records like Patrick Hernandez were the reason i ran screaming from chart music when i was at school, for something a bit different.

Not northern, not soul... just horrible. ph34r.gif

Twas a disco classic back in the day :(

It was, it was massive. I was a bit young to go to night clubs but i remember Peter Powell on some late night show somewhere raving about it with a packed dancefloor behind him.

I won a fiver at the local under 16's disco dancing to this just after I had mastered stomping, I couldn't wait to the end of the night for the last 3 records that would have been Northern time featuring Out On The Floor, The Night and Two Can Have A Party. :( I was 43 :(

Patrick Hernandez ........

In the words of Frankie Howard - " Titter Ye Not " .........

Since its 1978 release , Born to Be Alive has sold more than 800,000 units annually under various forms and compilations globally , and it has brought in more than 25 million dollars worldwide .

Oh my god this record still haunts me till this day and even on the year of my 40th on this bloody site !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was 9 yrs old on the usual package hol to majorca along with the rest of the uk when this one came out , fortnights hol of which my parents cottoned on I could dance ( reasonably well ) at the open air disco at the hotel ,

Guess what folks ?

The prizes were free booze and trips out , none of which were kiddy orientated !!!!!!

I won , and defended my junior disco dance champion status for a fortnight ,giving them the holiday of a lifetime !!!!!!!!!!!!

Payback time with the inheritence when it bloody comes !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Patrick Hernandez Born To Be Alive, is this track Northernsoul?

Of course not, it is Euro Disco!!!!!

This chick thinks it is!

Slightly cofused by the above statement - I have watched the video & at no point does the"chick" ever make any reference to Northern Soul. Indeed we don't even know what nationality the "chick" is, let alone whether she has ever even heard of Northern Soul.

Aha.

It takes one to know one.

How do YOU know what I danced to at The Saint ??????????

Ian, you may have a stalker :)

This for me this is thee track that the big boys used to dance to when attending none Northernsoul discos to show their stomping prowess.

I remember Paddy and Kev smith (where are they now?) from Keyingham near Hull smashing the dance floors to this, they where jaw droppingly good dancers and regular casino goers, they where my inspiration to learn how to dance..... Still on that quest I'm afraid. sad.gif

Ian a question, when was the last time you danced at a Northernsoul do? And what was it?

Thats not Ian by the way :D

Born To Be Alive falls into the same category as records like "Got A Feeling" or "I Love America" by Patrick Juvet - Europop which, whilst good at the time, come over as cheesy by today's standards.

laugh.gif lmfao...yes it is eurgh, biggrin.gif but i wouldnt say the woman is gargoyle-like or anythin, biggrin.gif but it is bad dancing, lol, its the type of tune they play at 40th birthday parties and weddings, and you see blokes that once were quite good looking, still thinking they got it and dancing up to young lasses to impress em
