Guest posstot Posted December 15, 2008 Posted December 15, 2008 What I mean is, a lot of , collectors of vinyl, will catalogue every thing they own, then, need to own the catalogue of a certain label/s so, there, catalogue is, then, complete. Then onto the next stable of labels..etc. Whereas, a hell of a lot of people just collect vinyl on what they like themselves to dance to, or just to listen to....the old Cherry picker.(thats me). I cherry pick, because i don't want the, extra expence of buying label numbers to fulfill a catalogue of some rather poo tunes....I can spend that money on the best track he/she/they recorded on whatever label. I will hear a tune that i have not heard before, and then check out the artist/s discography. If at all possible, then on from there to even checking out the labels he/she/they had appeared on. With the aid oft'internet, sometimes it's possible to hear a track posted by somebody, somewhere in the world. My argument for that recently is the Lloyd Price Oh Lady luck Monument........Thinkin, to myself, he must have recorded more on the label. I had a lottle search on the old lists and came up with "Don't cry". I'm not saying i discovered it first, it will be known and possibly widely, but i didn't personally know it, oh and it's a cracker....so if you dont know it and like it soulful-RnB styly, get one. If you do,int it good!! (has a little flavour of "pride and joy" about it, but much harder...imho). So onto my point; I would say I'm a dancin' collector..a cherry picker, that I'd enjoy hearing it in a club, and dancin too, (that includes everything down to beat ballads). Yet emphasising i love late 50's soulful-RnB, and all things pre disco!!(boooo, he's an ignoramus!!! he's a sixties mafia man!!). bum tish bum tish bum tish bum tish bum tish....and wait here's another record mixed in the same beat um cack um cack um cack um cack um cack...(hey, that's another thread) So what sort of collector are you, do you skip through the forrest picking the ripest cherries...or do you collect labal/stables or just acetates.....If you collect, whats your thing and how do you go about on your merry way, through the oceans of vinyl, ready to be plucked out, in to your keep net!! Mike.

Mike. I tried collecting all british motown and was well on the way to completing but got fed up with buying the crap (IMO) like debarge, charlene, bruce willis etc and the endless reissues of the same tracks. I now collect stuff I like which is danceable Motown and Northern. Over the last year Ive got stuff like Jack Montgomery, Fantastic Puzzles, Denese Lasalle and a few tasty motown tracks. So I suppose you'd call me a cherry picker Westy

Jumpinjoan Posted December 15, 2008 Posted December 15, 2008 (edited) I never have the money to spend on records I do like - let alone records I don't! Not that I would spend it on records I didn't like if I did. Edited December 15, 2008 by jumpinjoan
Raremusicdirect Posted December 15, 2008 Posted December 15, 2008 I am a somewhat dis-organised and scatty collector :-( I enjoy collecting items by artist, by label and by style BUT i'm always off on a tangent dependant on what I have heard / read / thought of that day !! I hardly ever finish anything..........but start lots of different things........ lol It also depends what pops up, where and for how much. Always admire those who achieve the full cataloging and recording, it would certainly save me picking up things two or three times..........and I also sadly like to see and issue and demo, guess we all have the odd irrationality to our collecting...... I have become a lot more patient when waiting for 45s, which generally helps lower the price ; but its always good to have somtehing pass through your hands.......... So as which type......ummm neither of the two you mention, prob not a very good one is closest !! Cheers krh68

sid jones Posted December 15, 2008 Posted December 15, 2008 hi i only collect what i like because i pay for them sid
Guest Matt Male Posted December 15, 2008 Posted December 15, 2008 I'm a bit of both, i buy stuff i like but i also try and collect the Port label (stalled a bit lately because i have all the best stuff on there now and like you say it's hard just to buy on a label and not spend on stuff i'd rather have). I also tend to go for artists, so several 45s by Pauline Shivers, The Five Stairsteps, The Fascinations, Carol Fran, King Coleman, Barbara Lynn etc.. plus a few others. I know i won't be disappointed if i buy things recorded by them.
Spacehopper Posted December 15, 2008 Posted December 15, 2008 cherry picker !....as has already been said cant afford to buy tunes if i dont like them...way too many great tunes out there to worry about collecting labels/artists etc...

Any on Port (either series) that you're missing....I may have a few in-fills Me, I hear something out, write it down and then track it down....the thrill of the chase - which must involve finding the cheapest best condition copy on the Net. And then I buy it, it arrives, I play it and stick it on the shelf....Repeat process for 35 years
Denbo Posted December 15, 2008 Posted December 15, 2008 Impulse buyer, speculative buyer, occasional plug-hole filler, wants list cosser-offerer, ferret & listen buyer (depends on location), very occasional replace not so good copy for better condition copy buyer, but worst of all, hoarding-all collector - I never sell anything I ain't got two of.

Guest Matt Male Posted December 15, 2008 Posted December 15, 2008 get on board, is this the same backing band as the jets.....has that feel about it. I don't know. The Clovers is another with a similar sound. It'd be nice to think Port had a house band backing groups like The Gees and The Jets, but i doubt it
