Jumpinjoan Posted December 15, 2008 Posted December 15, 2008 Hi Bearsy. I first remember the Hyperions being played around the late 80s early 90s. Rob Marriot's old Escorts cover up if my memory serves me correctly. Used to clear the floor. Can still hear Rob saying over the mic "I'm going to keep on playing it until you dance"

Chalky Posted December 15, 2008 Posted December 15, 2008 (edited) according to R&B Indies it was released in 1965. The credits are Washington, Hogains & Wells and it was produced by Perry Botkin (I think that's what it says on the label). Steve Smith found the record if memory serves me correctly and Rob got it from Steve and as said covered up as the Escorts (I'm So In Love With You?). As Joan said Rob had a lot of faith in the record and it did clear the floor initially, he played it several times one night at 100 Club They danced eventually Edited December 15, 2008 by chalky

Jumpinjoan Posted December 15, 2008 Posted December 15, 2008 top tune and how people cant take to that first time buggers the belief out of me Believe me Bearsy... Rob Marriot had many an empty dance floor to records that pack the dance floor today. The Trannels was another. Thank God people like Rob had faith in records and the guts to continue playing them week after week, despite getting slagged off and clearing the floor. You only have to look at how huge records like the Trannels and the Hyperions went on to become to realise he was right.
Baz Atkinson Posted December 15, 2008 Posted December 15, 2008 Hello mate I have my own theory about the record which might be shot to flames as usual,Joan and Chalky are right The maverick Mr Marriot broke the tune although at the time he spun it ,the response was muted to say the least lol.I think the outfit took there name from a student body in CLERMONT but I could be totally wrong lol, also there is RIVER in Atlanta named the same as the logo.As for the outfit themselves the credits dont give much away at all,the organ in the record reminds me of the Blackpool Tower Lounge BAZ A
Guest Bearsy Posted December 15, 2008 Posted December 15, 2008 there was a few at a guess, well more than one and they were from the USofA i reckon at least 3 maybe 4 plus the backing singers and yeah i think your right about them being American

It does make you wonder if we should follow most people's advice and 'play to the floor'? What if 'the floor' are an ignorant bunch with cloth ears?

One thing i just cant understand about this scene and that is, how some tunes just dont get accepted at first play when the likes of the Trannels - Ive been blessed that you mention, plus this one for example when they are so bloody obviously quality from start to finish , first time i had heard it played out and my ears pricked up like doctor spock on viagra I suppose its all a matter of personal taste

What if 'the floor' are an ignorant bunch with cloth ears? didnt you know that this scene is dictated by the dance floor Matt your not allowed to play anything other than all the broken records played a million times before (i guilty but a novice all the same) oh i just realised that all records had to be heard for the first time somewhere sometime so thats that theory out the window

What if 'the floor' are an ignorant bunch with cloth ears? I just wish Rob had still been around to see the dancefloor completely rammed to the stuff he championed and got slagged off for playing. Come to think of it... all this 'playing to the floor' stuff wasn't around back then was it? Thank God I say! If it had been records such as these may never have gone on to become the monster tunes they are today.
Baz Atkinson Posted December 15, 2008 Posted December 15, 2008 B52s Baz BLOODY HELL ARE STILL ABOUT THOUGHT THERE ALL ENDED UP IN A WEST END SCRAPYARD AFTER THE WAR FINISHED

Guest Mrs M Posted December 15, 2008 Posted December 15, 2008 Hi Bearsy. I first remember the Hyperions being played around the late 80s early 90s. Rob Marriot's old Escorts cover up if my memory serves me correctly. Used to clear the floor. Can still hear Rob saying over the mic "I'm going to keep on playing it until you dance" Hi Joan I too remember the days of Rob Marriott playing it as a c/u by The Escorts but I remember only too well the copy I actually bought from Ian Cunliffe for £100 and I then went on to sell it to Ron Pedley (through Saus) for the same price. Going back about 13-14 years ago now and I decided to sell when a few more copies filtered into the scene. What a big mistake that was but I suppose I can maybe still make claim to being the first female to get a hold of it. I went on to buy Kim Kattrell on Tyson with the cash.. What a nutter I was back in the day. Fortunately, I have Mr Molloy to keep me in check these days... ps Joan if we don't get to see you, you and Tony have a fab Christmas Love Julie and Dave Molloy xx
