...Does any film / visual footage of the Northern Scene exist before Wigan Casino and the This England documentary ?

Interesting question. It may do, but I doubt it. Even decent photographs are rare pre Wigan. I've personally never heard of any film footage, and what portable film cameras existed in those days required adequate lighting to operate, which wouldn't be viable in a club environment.

There is some footage of the early London scenes , but in respect of film aligned to " northern " venues , I very much doubt it .......

Someone in Cornwall has footage of Twisted Wheel.

Spookily weird Neil - I'm just re-reading Keith Rylatts & Phil Scotts 'Central 1179' and Keith mentions the same thing in his intro on page xv. Ken White has colour Super 8 Film of the Wheel and yes he does live in Cornwall. Keith Rylatt is your man if you want to know ANYTHING about pre-Wigan photos or footage as his research for the book was exhaustive. Also, from 1963 onwards, photographer Brian Smith documented 26 Brazennose St and provided images for the magazine 'R&B Scene'. Hope that helps. Jo

PS. My dream as a music archivist is for someone to get in touch with me and say 'I've got a couple of suitcases of old film reels and some B&W photo albums - would you like to come and sort it out'.....it has happened before when I was working on the 'Street Scene' exhibition at the V&A. But, I'd love anyone on the scene to come forward - I have the feeling that there is still a wealth of material stashed away that people don't think is valuable or interesting to others....trust me, it is!

I can't find the post on 'All Our Yesterdays' - someone on SS photographed a club in the very early 7Ts - looking at the clothes it looks like '71 as I was buying the same clobber at Martin Ford's at the same time....

Here's the link to my post in a different thread that shows his photographs - fabulous fabulous stuff:

If anyone can find the original post in 'All Our Yesterdays', it's the guy talking about photographing his local gig in North Wales....

Hopefully , this will be the case , and someone , somewhere will have thought to do so . Hopefully they will have taken care of whatever they have , but if not , and it has just been " shelved " , and the problem with old film , as you know , if it is not been protected , it could / will have deteriorated ........

Sadly, I know :) Having gone through hundreds of corroding tins of not so old film stock, I only need one whiff of the 'vinegar' smell to know that it's almost at the point of no return. As a 'professional' photo librarian/archivist, my dream would be to set up a central archive of pre 1979 soul/ scene/ fashion images/film stock from SS - all properly captioned and watermarked with the photographers credit, date, location and content caption.......ahhhhhhh, now that's almost nirvana :)

Sunnysoul, making it available to the public would mean setting up a central point of reference ie. the SS photo library with strict copyright control and access to low res thumbnail images for research and hi-res images for purchase as prints or reproduction in documentaries etc for a fee that would be split on an agency footing with photographer/ archive..... :) or something like that :)

nah, just a pass on, credit to the guys who put that site together

older sister may have some more from that era, drop us a pm if be of any use

Absolutely, Rob and Dave have accumalated some of the BEST photos I've seen (and trust me I've seen a few squillion billion) from that era especially the ladies fashion. It's as good as getting into a time machine and going there - the shots are in focus, the subjects are sitting still and the lighting is exceptional. I think whoever took these must've had a good camera - considering the normal Kodak snappy snap cameras most of us had back then and the photos we took with them :) Mike, I'd be fascinated just to look at what your sister has tucked away - purely for selfish indulgent purposes.... :)
