not clued up that much about it

but as the trailer demos the soundtrack takes an interesting approach

Clubbed is in UK cinemas nationwide on 16th January 2009.

CLUBBED - a journey through family and fear set in the violent world of 80s clubland.

Danny - a lonely factory worker intimidated by life - is battered and humiliated in front of his kids in a random act of violence. His already bleak existence sinks further into the abyss. On the verge of total breakdown, he decides to fight back.

He meets a group of nightclub doormen who take him in and give him the confidence to stand his ground. As he is drawn deeper into their world, he becomes embroiled with the local gangland boss, setting in motion a chain of events with shockingly brutal consequences.

The soundtrack to Clubbed features a selection of some of the stand out club tunes from the early 80's scene. Original Jamaican Ska, Northern Soul classics, Dance anthems and unforgettable R&B all beautifully fuse together to form a small piece of perfection.

The original music which predominantly features a wonderfully, contemporary orchestral score by composer Paul Heard revolves around four distinct character themes which reflect struggle, relationships, betrayal and growth.

Paul co-founded the Manchester based band M-People which during their ten-year reign as the world's no. 1 dance act, sold more than 11 million records. Their best known singles were Moving On Up and Search For a Hero while their 1994 album, Bizarre Fruit, was in the UK charts for some 2 1/2 years.

Clubbed's writer Geoff Thompson hails from Coventry, the home of the Two Tone movement of the late 70's and early 80's. This sound took the energy and the politics of punk, but replaced buzz saw guitars with choppy rhythms, horn sections as well as the style and rhythm of Jamaican Ska to create a distinctive style. This musical innovation took its roots from Caribbean Ska, Rock Steady and Reggae. It was honed into the multi-racial sound of Two-Tone by bands such as The Specials, The Selecter and The Beat.

Clubbed's soundtrack embraces all these influences as it takes us on a musical jouney through this defining era.

Saw a press screening in November - it is a very strong film indeed, with an excellent cast that includes Colin Salmon from Prime Suspect, the wonderful Maxine Peake and a real star turn from Mel Raido in the central role - he played Harry Roberts in the ITV mini series "He Kills Coppers".

It's directed by my pal Neil Thompson, who used to be the lead singer of Small Hours, who still loves his soul and who chose all the sountrack selections himself.

Well worth 90-odd minutes of anyone's time!

Hello,

I worked as music consultant on Clubbed with director Neil Thompson and music supervisor Olav Wyper.

Neil is a big soul fan and had the confidence to agree to some pretty obscure music selections by Bob Relf, Sam Dees, Carol Anderson, Bobby Hutton, Tony Cook, Bobby Purify, Lorraine Johnson, Dorothy Norwood, David Batiste etc.

The film will be released in UK and European cinemas in February 2009. I've delayed the release of the Sam Dees single 'Fool Of The Year' / 'Train To Tampa' (Shotgun SHOT 103) to coincide with the film launch. We will also reissue 'Twenty Years Later' by Bobby Hutton (Selecta SSP 8002) at the same time.

The Clubbed soundtrack album features sixteen tracks from the film, including all of the soul and funk tracks licensed by Millbrand / Selecta and our clients plus three reggae tracks (Jackie Mittoo, Roland Alphonsdo and Nine Ton Peanut Smugglers) and three pieces from the original score composed by Paul Heard.

I'm mastering the album right now and it will be released on Formosa Music via PIAS in late January. If the film is successful, an expanded soundtrack album will be issued featuring additional tracks.

Best regards,

Paul Mooney

P.S. The Clubbed soundtrack album will be dedicated to the memory of BOB RELF who passed way in November 2007, just weeks after production of the film was finished.

Hello Wendy,

I read Geoff's book a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it. He has a very interesting story and it's nice to see he won some major awards.

Must say that i am a fan of FILM, always loved the femme fatale, dark broody 50's b/w, the French New Wave etc, and i have always thought you could make a brilliant.......(TOTALLY NON SOUL - SCENE RELATED) film, i.e a urban/working class film that has a backdrop of all the wonderful music that our world encompasses, from the deep down ballads of 1960 to the up-tempo movers of the 60's and include the soulful movers of the 70's..........

Hi there,

It looks really good. But, do you have any news on when will be released in the States. Here in Mexico we don't get a thing unless it's been over there...

Cheers

Hello Dante,

They were making deals for US territories at the Sundance festival earlier this year. I'll try to find out what they set up.

And don't forget a DVD release will follow soon after the UK cinema launch.

Best regards,

Paul
