When was this covered-up, Dan? I remember Kitch and Dean Anderson playing a Darrell Banks cover-up in the late 80s: it was actually The New Sound on Turbo: the lp track "Don't Take Your Love." I've talked about this lp before. The group contained Robert Tanner (although he doesn't sing lead on DTLY) and the album features a re-recorded version of Tanner's "Sweet Memories" 45 on Magatone. The album is virtually impossible to find on original, but has been re-issued (probably illegally) in lookalike format in Japan, both on vinyl and cd. Even the re-issues are tough to find, and one sold on ebay for about £100 last winter.

They also had an amazing acetate which really sounded like Darrell Banks, called "The Harder You Love," which actually turned out to be Darrell Banks and was issued by Goldmine on "The Complete Recordings" cd many years later.

Have seen a few P-Vine lps recently of the New Sounds for around the 50 quid mark, Paul Sutton I think the last a few weeks ago.

Is the "Sweet Memories" you talk of Gareth an inferior/superior or indifferent version....would love to hear this alternate take.

There's a sound file on soulclub I think (https://the.soulclub.org), but inferior in my opinion.

Don't know if it's of any interest, but "Don't Take Your Love" by The New Sound has been legally reissued on a Sanctuary/Castle CD-compilation from 2003 entitled "Flying High - The Modern End Of Northern Soul" and consists of Turbo/Today/Vigor/Colossus/HotWax/Stang/AllPlatinum/etc. material.

Was "The Harder You Love" on an original acetate? And if so who has it now? Superb tune. I had the New Sound LP on Turbo and the two tracks that stand out are "Don't Take Your Love" and "Tell Me Your Name", some good ballads and a funkier side but these two are the best IMO. The reason I got rid of it is that it is basically a faulty product. The mastering or whatever it is they do is not done properly, it is fucked up and then some, and the result is you basically can't play the album out over a normal club PA since that causes a minor earthquake due to the extremely high low bass. Even if you turn the bass down a lot it just doesn't sound good. The Megatone 45 version of "Sweet Memories" is more powerful and better but the LP version is nice too. "Tell Me Your Name" came out as a 45 on Megatone by Robert Tanner but reportedly it is an inferior and jazzy version compared to the version on the LP, I have yet to hear the 45 myself though so not sure. If someone can provide a soundfile or otherwise let me hear this other Megatone 45 it would be great.

As Christian wrote, the mixing/mastering/pressing of the LP is absolutely ridiculous. Anyone without any kind of "studio skills" could've done it better. Perhaps someone should do a proper remixed/remastered (re)issue of "Don't Take You Love" on a 45 (something for Grapevine perhaps? or Sanctuary as they seems to own the rights to Turbo material) because the sound quality on the original Turbo LP cut isn't impossible to "work with", I've done it and I've managed to get some decent sound quality on it (filtering out about 90% of the bass and upping the mid and treble, then running it through a compressor. The japanese reissue/bootleg sounds the same or even slightly worse than the Turbo LP.

I think the Harder You Love was played from an original acetate. Dean told me at the time that they found it in LA. I'd love to know who has it now. As you say, Christian, an awesome record.
