Guest Posted April 28, 2005 Posted April 28, 2005 Just to let you know there's a 6 part documentary coming up on BBC 2 starting early May. Not sure what it's called or the start date as I saw it advertised for the 1st time last night. I'm sure some of you bloodhounds will come up with the name and start date... Looks new too! One for your diaries folks! - Ray Charles thru to Mary J. Blige...

Steveh73 Posted April 30, 2005 Posted April 30, 2005 Take a look at this months' Echoes for an article on this series - looks like the producers have taken some liberties with the definition of the word 'Soul'.
Guest Dan Posted May 1, 2005 Posted May 1, 2005 Take a look at this months' Echoes for an article on this series - looks like the producers have taken some liberties with the definition of the word 'Soul'. link the thing about this is, i saw the trailer on bbc2 advertising it as 'the definitive history of soul music' and you just know - or at least suspect - is that it will be based on the usual suspects. there's be some early gospel stuff and a bit about how soul came about and then some stuff about ray charles, motown, otis etc and then it will get into the 70s, probably a bit on the temps, four tops, marvin etc etc. all ok as far as it goes but there is no way that it will be the definitive history and i wish they wouldn't pretend it will be. history of wars is always written by the winners and the history of music is no different. just happens that the losers were very important to us!
Mike Posted May 1, 2005 Posted May 1, 2005 Think anyone could be hard pushed to give the definitive history of soul, espically going by the many different takes have on it on here going by what read earlier on here, does seem to me that should be better quality than the vh1/mtv sort of 5 min things see now and again Here's what was published on soul source a couple of weeks ago by some involved in it Just to let you know that the Beeb will be transmitting Soul Deep from Saturday 7th May on BBC2 at 9pm. There are six programmes in the series, roughly broken down as:- Prog 1: Rhythm & Blues Prog 2: Gospel to Soul Prog 3: Detroit and Chicago (largely Motown and Chess soul but with some Curtis) Prog 4: Southern Soul Prog 5: Funk Prog 6: Contemporary R&B We helped out on the Southern one and I have seen a rough copy of the show and it is good with interviews, contemporary footage including unseen film of James Carr singing Love Attack which we put them on to and some re-enactments of the last hours of Otis Redding and the life of James Carr. The producer and crew are the same people behind the gospel and country series already shown on BBC2 so it is excellent quality. Best wishes Colin Keeping Soul Alive Limited
