Guest Awake 502 Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 Have been reminiscing with an old friend about some of the live acts we have seen over the years, Major Lance, Trammps, Chuck Jackson, Jnr Walker, Eddie Parker, Ric Tic Revue etc but one name always came to the fore, ladies and gentlemen I nominate the soul master himself Mr Edwin Starr, everytime he was fantastic... Any other nominations ?
Prophonics 2029 Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 Dean Parrish, Don Gardner and Little Ann was very very good.
Winnie :-) Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 Have been reminiscing with an old friend about some of the live acts we have seen over the years, Major Lance, Trammps, Chuck Jackson, Jnr Walker, Eddie Parker, Ric Tic Revue etc but one name always came to the fore, ladies and gentlemen I nominate the soul master himself Mr Edwin Starr, everytime he was fantastic... Any other nominations ? ============== Best I've seen in recent years has to be Barbara Lynn, she was magnificent. Overall though, for consistently good quality, I'd have to agree with you about Edwin Starr Winnie :-)
Soulhustler Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 The Dells at trentham The Impressions at northampton
Supercorsa Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 ladies and gentlemen I nominate the soul master himself Mr Edwin Starr, everytime he was fantastic... ============== Overall though, for consistently good quality, I'd have to agree with you about Edwin Starr Ditto. Sadly missed, I sometimes feel he was taken for granted by us over this side of the pond. What I'm trying to say is that whereas some acts are only seen once or twice at weekenders, he was performing all year round in the UK, so people knew what to expect whereas with others there's that excitement as you never know what to expect. With Edwin you always knew you were in for a great show. I remember once in Aldershot he was accused of miming (due to backing tapes being used), so he turned off the tapes and sang acapella, excellent! I hope this makes sense. 1
Dennisoul Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 Chuck Jackson at Great Yarmouth weekender late 80s. He played everybodys favs..the whole lot of em!!!
Liamgp Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 Lorraine Chandler at Stafford...wasn't too sure about her back-up singers though!
pikeys dog Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 Betty Lavette. Enjoyed her show three times, all different but all excellent.

doublecookin Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 unfortunately for the purists, I would have to say the exciters at the casino
Davetay Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 unfortunately for the purists, I would have to say the exciters at the casino Ya Exciters at Wigan was great but so was Betty Wright. Major Lance, J J Barnes, Edwin Starr and Jr Walker were all great I,ve watched all more than once. Barbara Lynn at the Gala Gran, and Dells at Trentham were both very good. The Ric-Tic revue at the Ritz was one more that comes to mine, but some of the best ones were not at a Northern do. Temps, Marvin Gaye, Al Green, Mary J Blige, Four Tops, Maze, and lots, lots more. How can I forget all the acts at Prestatyn over the years some very good (and some not). Nearly forgot all the great Millie Jackson concrets in the 70s.
Stubbsy Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 Velvelettes - Cleethorpes Weekender - 2001 or 2002?
Simsy Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 I nominate the soul master himself Mr Edwin Starr With you on this. Would also like to nominate the late great Ray Pollard.
Godzilla Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 unfortunately for the purists, I would have to say the exciters at the casino What? Not the Nosebleeds??
Guest Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 Has everybody forgot about the wonderful Originals at The Ritz in 2002? By far the greatest live performance at a Northern venue for me. SEAN (signed in as Jayne)
Jerry Hipkiss Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 Agree on Edwin, Jimmy Conwell at the 2001 weekender did it for me as well...sadly an asthma attack the next year meant I kept my record of never having seen JJ Barnes...
Gaz Lees Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 Recent best live performance The Precisions first time around at Prestatyn a couple of years ago the live version of If this Love brilliant! 1
Davetay Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 Has everybody forgot about the wonderful Originals at The Ritz in 2002? By far the greatest live performance at a Northern venue for me. SEAN (signed in as Jayne) Ya Sean, I had forgot about R S,s birthday do, yet one more great live act. Dave.
Soulfool Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 Yep, Velvelettes were excellent but Maxine Brown was a bit special, the atmosphere at that weekender in Cleethorpes was awesome and Al Wilson was a bit special too, a fantastic singer and after meeting him afterwards - a true Gentleman. David
Ian Seaman Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 Best live act...... Jackie Wilson at Wigan He was ill at the time and said he felt rotten but wanted the show to go on and boy did it !!! What a voice and performance, will live with me for ever Best live act by far for me, recently Dean Parrish was good, still got a great voice, saw the Velvelettes on Anglesey about 1977/78, think the lead singer was about 16 lol and they were dire !!! Ian.
TOAD Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 Masqueraders at prestatyn awesome and then some
Ste Henderson Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 Chuck Jackson at Great Yarmouth weekender late 80s. He played everybodys favs..the whole lot of em!!! Have to agree a brilliant performance, also the same weekender Eddie Holman and Gene Chandler What a line up and the best weekender I have ever been to Steve
Ian Parker Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 Jnr Walker, nottm palais, 1980 Edwin Starr & Chuck Jackson, Nottm Astoria (various name changes) Eddie Holman & Jnr Walker, Peterboro Ric-tic revue, Alfreton (still got programme) Gene Chandler, Hinckley Curtis Mayfield, Hinckley Martha Reeves, Alfreton (i think). she sang 'one way out' with the crowd coz the band didnt know it these stand out above others.
Soulsmith Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 Martha Reeves, Alfreton (i think). she sang 'one way out' with the crowd coz the band didnt know it these stand out above others. Same thing happened at Wigan.
Alan Pollard Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 Have been reminiscing with an old friend about some of the live acts we have seen over the years, Major Lance, Trammps, Chuck Jackson, Jnr Walker, Eddie Parker, Ric Tic Revue etc but one name always came to the fore, ladies and gentlemen I nominate the soul master himself Mr Edwin Starr, everytime he was fantastic... Any other nominations ? Right where do we start, there have been some brilliant acts over the years but the highlights for me were, Detroit Emeralds - Heavy Steam Machine. Maxine Brown - Cleethorpes. Dean Parrish - Cleethorpes. Betty Wright - Wigan Casino. regards, Alan
Davetay Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 Right where do we start, there have been some brilliant acts over the years but the highlights for me were, Detroit Emeralds - Heavy Steam Machine. Maxine Brown - Cleethorpes. Dean Parrish - Cleethorpes. Betty Wright - Wigan Casino. regards, Alan 1st time saw J J Barnes wes at a Steam Machine All-Dayer (late 72/early 73 ?) I missed Maxine Brown at Cleethorps, but caught her act at the 100 club on the thursday night after. Like I,ve already said Betty Wright at Wigan, tops.
Alan Pollard Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 1st time saw J J Barnes wes at a Steam Machine All-Dayer (late 72/early 73 ?) I missed Maxine Brown at Cleethorps, but caught her act at the 100 club on the thursday night after. Like I,ve already said Betty Wright at Wigan, tops. Hi, I think I'm right in saying that J.J.Barnes was on at the same all dayer at The Heavy Steam Machine, can you remember if I'm right. Regards Alan
Guest jobete Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 I agree about Edwin the only bad preformance I've seen of him was in the 80's a mid week do in Bradford, he had lost his voice, ended up giving the mike to the audience and let them get on with it The Dells were brillant, don't think anyone has given Popcorn a mention, I thought he was outstanding at the Dolphin Centre Darlington, Major lance did a good one at Stafford Away from a northern do, then for me it has to be Irma Thomas. She has been truly exceptional every time I've seen her I'll always have fond memories of Jimmy James in the mid 70's singing, "It's Growing, "Chain of Love & "This Heart of Mine". Didn't go down to well with joe public, but for me utterly magic Spyk
CAMBRIDGE SOUL Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 Have to agree a brilliant performance, also the same weekender Eddie Holman and Gene Chandler What a line up and the best weekender I have ever been to Steve Eddie Holman was the tops for me at that weekender the beer was off though ! strange the things you remember !
Kev Moore Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 Got to say for me it was pobably J.J. Barnes at Wigan as this was the first time I'd heard a black man sing live. Awesome! Then Chuck Jackson at Yarmouth was great. All the acts at 100club including Betty Lavette, Terry Callier, Ray Pollard, Maxine Brown, Hoagy Lands, Dean Parrish. But two great ones were The Masqueraders at Prestatyn. Lou Pride at Prestatyn in the Modern Room. All great acts...love seeing live ones! Kev
Davetay Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 (edited) Hi, I think I'm right in saying that J.J.Barnes was on at the same all dayer at The Heavy Steam Machine, can you remember if I'm right. Regards Alan Hi Alan, I don,t think it was the same all dayer, but I could be wrong. I don,t remember being any other acts on that day. They were doing the rounds about the same time, I saw them mid-week in Preston around that time. Yours Dave. Having checked up it was the Top Rank Hanley not Steam Machine were i 1st saw J J Barnes (oh well) Edited December 13, 2008 by davetay
Chalky Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 (edited) Chuck Jackson at Great Yarmouth weekender late 80s. He played everybodys favs..the whole lot of em!!! He was superb. I had a fantastic day watching him rehearse bollocking Snake and the band. Don't recall seeing too many bad acts back then at Yarmuff. Ray Pollard, Eddie Holman, Gene Chandler and more all superb. Vocally the Precisions will take some beating. Plenty more photos on my flickr page (link below). Edited December 11, 2008 by chalky
Guest gordon russell Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 Velvelettes - Cleethorpes Weekender - 2001 or 2002?
Jerry Hipkiss Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 He was superb. I had a fantastic day watching him rehearse bollocking Snake and the band. Yes, he (Chuck Jackson) didn't seem to hit it off personally with Snake at Fleetwood either. BTW More good acts - Detroit Emeralds and Sam and Dave, Torch all-dayer, 1973...Sam and Dave were my heroes. brilliant, even if I didn't know at the time that they weren't on speaking terms!
Guest Church Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 Have been reminiscing with an old friend about some of the live acts we have seen over the years, Major Lance, Trammps, Chuck Jackson, Jnr Walker, Eddie Parker, Ric Tic Revue etc but one name always came to the fore, ladies and gentlemen I nominate the soul master himself Mr Edwin Starr, everytime he was fantastic... Jerry Hipkiss Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 Gotta be Major Lance at the Queens Hall Leeds Surely you're too young to have gone there Dave? ...if that was the BIG venue, it's one I've always been glad I missed...
Guest Church Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 Surely you're too young to have gone there Dave? ...if that was the BIG venue, it's one I've always been glad I missed... Nope I was there - went up on the train with Phil Taylor and the 1st wife. Great venue - a converted tram station

Jerry Hipkiss Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 Yes, he (Chuck Jackson) didn't seem to hit it off personally with Snake at Fleetwood either. Retraction time - I meant Gene Chandler...should really concentrate more but I'm supposed to be working...

manus Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 As others have already said Betty Wright was fantastic at Wigan Cheers Manus
Sunnysoul Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 Funnily enough a lot of old timers who were on the scene in the first half of the 70's - especially the Torch - say the best live act they ever saw was the STYLISTICS. 1
Guest nomad Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 Yep , was at Bingley Hall that night when they all went up in the Pyramid Spaceship thingy , absolutely Brilliant Swifty They did the same at the Civic Hall, Wolverhampton.....Awesome!!!
Guest vinylvixen Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 (edited) The late Great Edwin Starr.....knew how to work it........the Masqueraders at the first Northampton weekender 05....bloody awesome......The Adorables.....OOh Boy...same weekender...The Impressions......Northampton weekender 08...Woah...The Fantastic Peps....Jan 08.....billiant....Delxxxx Edwin Starr (and Harold Melvin & Bluenotes making a surprise appearance and joining him) at Embassy Rooms off Piccadilly - Tony Rounce will remember as he was djing there....and the waiters were on rollerskates (?) wearing bellhop hats and red shorts (or was I on drugs ) The Masqueraders @ Northampton - OMGGGGGGGGGGGGG - what an experience. I think everyone who saw them there is still in a state of awe! The Impressions @ Northampton - when Fred sang his solo on 'Gypsy Woman' I cried........just magical Bobby Hutton @ Cleethorpes Doris Troy @ the Ship Inn, Chatham - the bar was no bigger than my front room and it was HEAVING. Doris was on 'stage' along with a Hammond organ, saxophonist and guitar player. She was appearing in 'Mamma I want to sing' and one of the guys at the pub was her dresser. So we asked her to come and do a 'special' for World Aids Day and she agreed.........one of life's little turn ups for the book. I dj'd for the night and during 'rehersal' I played her 'Face Up to the Truth' - she said she hadn't sung that since she'd cut the record and proceeded to sing an accapella version. Sometimes you think you've won the Euromillions - twice Heatwave @ Chatham Central Hall - Always and Forever still has a special place in my sentimental heart O'Jays/ Freddie Jackson/Joanna Gardener/Luther Vandross/Fatback Band @ Hammersmith Odeon Skullsnaps/ Diplomats @ These Old Shoes, London.....this is stretching it a bit as they didn't sing but turned up with Ady the night before Cleethorpes. But the lead singer did come on 'stage' and in front of the assembled throng said to me 'Hey guess what'....Me: 'What'.....Him:'I'm YOUR pimp'....I dined off that for months Edited December 12, 2008 by vinylvixen
Jez Jones Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 Funnily enough a lot of old timers who were on the scene in the first half of the 70's - especially the Torch - say the best live act they ever saw was the STYLISTICS. As an old timer I concur they were brill. A few folk weren't particularly pleased at this'non' northern group doing a spot but I don't think anyone can deny they did a seemingly faultless performance of black music rendition Funny that no one has mentioned the Major at the Torch -----possibly cos it goes without saying eh? Anyway possibly only a year or two after the Torch ,I went to a 'soup in a basket do' at Jollees in Stoke and saw the Three Degrees. Again they were at the height of their 'powers' and were spectacular. Waited for 'Gotta draw the line' but it never came
Guest vinylvixen Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 I went to a 'soup in a basket do' at Jollees in Stoke and saw the Three Degrees. Waited for 'Gotta draw the line' but it never came I bet your soup had gone cold waiting for 'Contact' and the kitchen had closed and the MC had gone home before Sheila sang 'And In Return'.....
