Guest Simon Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 (edited) Just listening to Derek & Ray's 'Interplay', imho this is proper Northern that was made to be blasted out the speakers in dancehalls at weekends, i fear this sorta tune is frowned upon nowadays, the same as things like Andre Brasseur's 'The kid' are. However i played 'The kid' out the other day to a 6ts/Studenty style audience & their faces lit up when i played this and you could see their energy levels visibly grow. Discuss if you wish, quite intrigued to hear people's views, i know some people will say these aren't Soul records but i'd rather hear them played out than a dreary plodder like say 'Ordinary Joe'. Simon That's a fair enough post Simon. I would like to be as articulate as you - but I think Interplay and The Kid are fooking shite! Ordinary Joe is has been hammered over the years and has lost it's sparkle for me - but would prefer to hear this than those two old bits of kipper!
Jaco Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 I've never liked "Interplay" because I hate, what I assume, is the harpsichord instrumentation that runs through it. But it's Northern because it was played as such and definitely got dance floor reaction, which is the prime motive, is it not? There are much better instrumentals, though.

Nice one Pete, think you've coined a new term, "Kipper oldies"! Think i'll use that on my next flyer if you don't mind. Simon
Guest in town Mikey Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 (edited) I like it. One of the few good memories of the decidely ordinary Blackpool Weekenders was someone playing this and the whole room clapping. It sent tingles down the neck, or perhaps I had whiplash from tripping on the jigsaw "dancefloor" Edited December 8, 2008 by in town Mikey

Guest in town Mikey Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 Which one Mike? I went to two at the Cala Gran. One when Dave Flynn and Greg were stuck on at the allnighter when most had gone (Bobby Patterson), and the following year (Gene Chandler and Frank Wilson). Spent all weekend being told this was the "brand leader". Not sure what the brand was. It wasnt leader in anything in my book...so...

Epic Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 Sorry to say that Derek & Ray was played at a time when "anything with a beat" became acceptable to the Northern crowd & any quality control on the scene had long gone. A dreadful piece of music & definitely one of the worst records ever played - if you want to hear a good instumental then listen to G Davis & R Tyler "Hold On Help Is On The Way" - now that's what I call an instrumental.

My good mate Billy was double decking with me on my 45th a few years ago when someone requested 'Interplay' "God Kev" he says "I've had that in my box for 20 years and it's the first time I've been asked for it." Sounded the same as always. Back in the box for another 20. I followde up with 'The onion song' Kev

Sutty Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 Oh yeah, oops! I'm entitled to let my hair down every now & then surely. Simon Definitely not, you're in a position of high moral authority and need to act as such at all times. If the residents of Warmington-on-sea had taken that attitude we'd all be speaking German now

Steve G Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 Ha ha Interplay - how we loved that back in the main hall at Wigan in the 70s. Now I would never be seen within 100 yards of a copy. The Kid was always more of a youth club record - if the DJ didn't have any proper norvern he'd brobably have Andre Brassiere :
Mark S Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 Niether of these sounds were particulaly soulfull or even quality but they are of their time I still like to hear them though Remember Thunder-Lord Thunder
Baz Atkinson Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 Massive at wigan as a spotty kid i loved it along with bobby paris-james coit, colured man,lou roberts etc,all these records had a place in time to be honest ,as i slOwly moved on however i used to shoot them one by one with my air rifle after seeing the light and devoting my latter casino years to Searling! One record I still love played out from that era is rex garvin-you dont need no help, could do with a copy to be honest. BAZ A
Mach Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 like alot of stuff was of its time..as we know it packed the floor..no doubt would probably pack certain "soul night" floors nowadays..but you would,nt catch me strutting to it now, its like saying who,d wear baggies and vests in this day and age.... ..well... each to their own.

Simon I think the reason why people's faces light up is because stuff like Interplay and The Kid take them back to when they were teenagers at the local youth club, they certainly do that for me. It's pure nostalgia. You're right though that 30 years ago these were solid northern records that everyone danced to in the same way everyone dances to the Parisians now, no criticism of them then as far as i can remember. Just shows how tastes change eh?
Guest Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 still got the copy i bought 25/30 years ago and still get it out regularly at home; not for Interplay - it has 'God Knows' on the flip which is absolutely awsome
Mach Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 yeah that mike mcdonald record also got spun around the same time as interplay, but sounds o.k today
Guest soulmaguk Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 is it 60s rave? i think it should of been used in an austin powers film.
macca Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 I agree it's a time & place thing, same goes for Phil Coulter & The Baja Marimba Band. Massive records. & if the smarties got the better of you, you'd hit the floor with the rest of them. This is a confession. Oh' lord...
Zed1 Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 (edited) Hardly the best Soul record ever - but as said it was of it's time and like many 100's of others I was clapping away to it at Wigan.... TBH I've only heard it played out a few times in the last 10 or so years, which is a bit of a shame as I'd be more than happy for it to substitute that god awful DJ Genitals track that gets murdered every week... Guest andyrattigan Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 As bad as INTERPLAY is, and I think its awful, its horridness doesn't come close to BOK TO BACH, truly one of the worst records to ever grace the decks of a Soul club. There are so many good REAL Soul instrumentals, a few being GERRY AND PAUL- THE CATWALK EDDIE BISHOP- CALL ME JOHNNY GIBSON TRIO- BEACHCOMBER WILLIE MITCHELL- THE CHAMPION WATTS 103RD ST RHYTHM BAND- BROWN SUGAR FRANK FOSTER- HARLEM RUMBLE JR WALKER- WALK IN THE NIGHT and many many more.

I have never liked " Intercourse " - sorry " Interplay " : I could not understand why it became so big , as it was / is a very poor record ......... When I first heard it , I had to smile , for it conjoured up images of a chap in a tail suit and a bint in a meringue dress , both with frozen smiles , doing the paso doble ........ Thankfully - and my apologies to those who hold the record in high esteem , I have thankfully not heard the said disc since the old king died : but if I did , I am sure the same the paso doble image would again come to mind , but this time becoming a more nightmarish one . with the inclusion of " Bruce " Albert Steptoe's Dad " Forsyth and Tess " I'm so excited I think I'm going to wet myself " Daly ....... Another dire instrumental to assault the ears , was " Esperanto " ......... Malc Burton Edited December 9, 2008 by Malc Burton

Simon I think if you where to take a poll of the people who would dance to Interplay, most would probably fall into the 40 - 45ish age group as this was one of the main tunes being played when they where teenagers. Also as I remember it was a big hit with the Ladies with them skirts that used to ride high when they went into a spin, which in turn was a big hit with the Lads who would rather sit on the floor instead of a seat If you also carried out a poll at the same time at the bar - toilets - outside - anywhere but near the music I think the age group would be anything from 45 to 65. I am in the first group (age wise that is) and as I have said on other occasions the record that first got me into N/Soul was Mike McDonald's 'God Knows'. Now I have just learnt something still got the copy i bought 25/30 years ago and still get it out regularly at home; not for Interplay - it has 'God Knows' on the flip which is absolutely awsome I knew that it was a B side but did not realise on the back of Interplay . I have to admit I did used to dance to Interplay but would never get up to that tune from (I think it was Joe 90)

CAMBRIDGE SOUL Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 worked in its day as many sounds do now..... i'm sure in 20 years people will take the piss out of sounds that now fill the floor..... Sam got kicked out of St Ive's for playing "funk" and "pop crap" but now those same sounds are now accepted and sort after 45's....it's all relative I never liked queen of fools but at the Howard mallet reunion a few weeks ago it packed the floor..... Perfect timing for me as I got to the bar without any hassle!
