Just listening to Derek & Ray's 'Interplay', imho this is proper Northern that was made to be blasted out the speakers in dancehalls at weekends, i fear this sorta tune is frowned upon nowadays, the same as things like Andre Brasseur's 'The kid' are.

However i played 'The kid' out the other day to a 6ts/Studenty style audience & their faces lit up when i played this and you could see their energy levels visibly grow.

Discuss if you wish, quite intrigued to hear people's views, i know some people will say these aren't Soul records but i'd rather hear them played out than a dreary plodder like say 'Ordinary Joe'.

That's a fair enough post Simon. I would like to be as articulate as you - but I think Interplay and The Kid are fooking shite!

Ordinary Joe is has been hammered over the years and has lost it's sparkle for me - but would prefer to hear this than those two old bits of kipper!

I've never liked "Interplay" because I hate, what I assume, is the harpsichord instrumentation that runs through it.

But it's Northern because it was played as such and definitely got dance floor reaction, which is the prime motive, is it not?

There are much better instrumentals, though.

Sorry to say that Derek & Ray was played at a time when "anything with a beat" became acceptable to the Northern crowd & any quality control on the scene had long gone.

A dreadful piece of music & definitely one of the worst records ever played - if you want to hear a good instumental then listen to G Davis & R Tyler "Hold On Help Is On The Way" - now that's what I call an instrumental.

Now I would never be seen within 100 yards of a copy.

The Kid was always more of a youth club record - if the DJ didn't have any proper norvern he'd brobably have Andre Brassiere :

Massive at wigan as a spotty kid i loved it along with bobby paris-james coit,colured man,lou roberts etc,all these records had a place in time to be honest ,as i slOwly moved on however i used to shoot them one by one with my air rifle after seeing the light and devoting my latter casino years to Searling! I think the reason why people's faces light up is because stuff like Interplay and The Kid take them back to when they were teenagers at the local youth club, they certainly do that for me. It's pure nostalgia. You're right though that 30 years ago these were solid northern records that everyone danced to in the same way everyone dances to the Parisians now, no criticism of them then as far as i can remember. Just shows how tastes change eh?

still got the copy i bought 25/30 years ago and still get it out regularly at home; not for Interplay - it has 'God Knows' on the flip which is absolutely awsome

yeah that mike mcdonald record also got spun around the same time as interplay, but sounds o.k today

is it 60s rave? i think it should of been used in an austin powers film.

I agree it's a time & place thing, same goes for Phil Coulter & The Baja Marimba Band. Massive records.

Hardly the best Soul record ever - but as said it was of it's time and like many 100's of others I was clapping away to it at Wigan....

TBH I've only heard it played out a few times in the last 10 or so years, which is a bit of a shame as I'd be more than happy for it to substitute that god awful DJ Genitals track that gets murdered every week...

There are so many good REAL Soul instrumentals, a few being

I have never liked " Intercourse " - sorry " Interplay " : I could not understand why it became so big , as it was / is a very poor record .........

When I first heard it , I had to smile , for it conjoured up images of a chap in a tail suit and a bint in a meringue dress , both with frozen smiles , doing the paso doble ........

Thankfully - and my apologies to those who hold the record in high esteem , I have thankfully not heard the said disc since the old king died : but if I did , I am sure the same the paso doble image would again come to mind , but this time becoming a more nightmarish one . with the inclusion of " Bruce " Albert Steptoe's Dad " Forsyth and Tess " I'm so excited I think I'm going to wet myself " Daly .......

I think if you where to take a poll of the people who would dance to Interplay, most would probably fall into the 40 - 45ish age group as this was one of the main tunes being played when they where teenagers. Also as I remember it was a big hit with the Ladies with them skirts that used to ride high when they went into a spin, which in turn was a big hit with the Lads who would rather sit on the floor instead of a seat

If you also carried out a poll at the same time at the bar - toilets - outside - anywhere but near the music I think the age group would be anything from 45 to 65.

I am in the first group (age wise that is) and as I have said on other occasions the record that first got me into N/Soul was Mike McDonald's 'God Knows'. Now I have just learnt something

I knew that it was a B side but did not realise on the back of Interplay .

I have to admit I did used to dance to Interplay but would never get up to that tune from (I think it was Joe 90)

worked in its day as many sounds do now..... i'm sure in 20 years people will take the piss out of sounds that now fill the floor..... Sam got kicked out of St Ive's for playing "funk" and "pop crap" but now those same sounds are now accepted and sort after 45's....it's all relative

Well Ive not long back, just got, a Mint, still sealed, demo copy of the LP, and ive not opened it yet. Just cant bring my self to break the seal. So I guess I dont like the record that much after all, as if I did I would of opened it and played it by now. Its just a piece of northen memrobilia realley. but I recon I could of sold it ten times over if I wanted to and even got offerd 40 quid for it by one guy

If I need the money I would, and it has been said that, I need a few good soul records in my collection

I think interplay is special because in its day it was not just another tune, but a massive tune and absoultely crammed the dancefloors. It was an Anthem.

Over the years many tunes reached this level and usually lasted 6 months or so before being put to rest.

Much better records got less attention and have since got a second chance like Little Eddie Taylors I had a good time etc.

So justice prevailed.

For those who did not enjoy Interplay as a new tune, you really did miss out on a special if naive time.
