Guest micksmith Posted March 23, 2004 Posted March 23, 2004 it's come to my attention while looking at all the replys we don't have many u.k. collectors on this site. shame. anyway looking through my collection i've found a few more. jackie edwards. i feel so bad. island. jenny wren. chasing my dreams all over town. fontana. herbie goins. no 1 in your heart. parlophone. linda lewis. you turned my bitter into sweet. polydor. billie davis. just walk in my shoes. piccadilly. stella starr. bring him back. piccadilly. jack hammer. what greater love. u/artists. barry st. john. everything i touch turns to teras. columbia. john drevar. the closer she gets. m.g.m. kiki dee. on a magic carpet ride. fontana. jason knight. our love is getting stronger. pye. keep 'em coming.
Guest Posted March 23, 2004 Posted March 23, 2004 I think they were UK Productions(or Jamaican-not much difference!!) Jackie Edwards "Feel So Bad" and also I had forgotten how good "Come On Home" was.
slimharpo Posted March 23, 2004 Posted March 23, 2004 Timi Yuro - It'll Never Be Over For Me - Liberty - I'm reliably informed by Rob Hughes who works for EMI & is a well known biographer & label lister that this was produced over here by Les Reed!! - I seem to remember the original LP saying as much. Al Matthews - Fool - CBS Moon Williams - Suspicious Love - DJM Solomon King - This Beautiful Day - Columbia Be honest tho' most UK productions were crap weren't they??
Guest in town Mikey Posted March 24, 2004 Posted March 24, 2004 Crap! Crap!! April Stevens - Wanting You. Ok maybe, but at the time, hairs on the back of the neck job!!
Guest Posted March 24, 2004 Posted March 24, 2004 a top 5 of other great UK productions from my collection (which have'nt been mentioned previously): 1. BILLIE DAVIS - NOBODYS HOME TO GO HOME (Decca) 2. HELEN SHAPIRO- HE KNOWS HOW TO LOVE ME (Columbia..self penned by a 17yr old Helen !) 3. STEVIE KIMBLE- ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD (Decca) 4. KENNY LYNCH - MY OWN TWO FEET (HMV) 5. ANDEE SILVER - ONLY YOUR LOVE CAN SAVE ME (Fontana..better version than Betty Lavettes) Also lets hear it for Dustys 'whats it gonna be', Truly Smiths 'my smile is a frown', Emma Rede's 'i gotta be with you' (great beat ballad on columbia), other good examples of the 'kitchen sink' uk soul production (a new sub genre maybe ?) . Some productions can be a bit twee, granted, though for me, is'nt there something just as magical as a hairdresser from grimsby making a great record as a factory worker from detroit ? Thumbs up to the likes of Mick and Pete Smith for promoting the UK stuff.
Guest Posted March 24, 2004 Posted March 24, 2004 helen shapiro - take me for a while (great dancer!!) samantha jones - surrounded by a ray of sunshine nita rossi - something to give
Guest Posted March 24, 2004 Posted March 24, 2004 In Town Mikey don't seem to have a lot of idea of UK productions as both Millie Jackson and April Stevens were US.
grant Posted March 24, 2004 Posted March 24, 2004 Dear Guest I think Mikey just got his wires crossed in what is asked hear - must admit wasnt sure myself if Mick means UK produced and on UK label only or can we include the likes of stuff issued on UK labels e.g. Garnett Mimms Looking For You on British UA - as my definition of a UK collection is anything on a British label whether or not it came out US etc ???????????? Grant
Guest in town Mikey Posted March 25, 2004 Posted March 25, 2004 Not the first time I will have made a fool of myself in public. heh heh
Gene-r Posted March 25, 2004 Posted March 25, 2004 Almost forgot how good "Where Is He" by Flama Sherman is - thanks for the reminder Hippo!!! Also worth mentioning the Chants' 1976 offering, "I've Been Trying" on small UK label Chipping Norton. Found 7 unplayed copies for 10p each in a boot market in 1997, sold them to JM for £70, and he sold them for £20 each - as I expected, and I think it's still the going rate!! Moral of the story - go through boxes of what seem to be crap 45s, in charity shops and boot fairs, thoroughly. You too could find a Frankie and Johnny issue on Decca buried amongst Des O'Connor and Jim Reeves - just like I did in 1987!! Should never have sold it for £30...... Gene
Guest Posted March 26, 2004 Posted March 26, 2004 Ebony Keyes on Picadilly is one of the best in my opinion - anybody know anything about them? Ray
Guest Johnny One Trout Posted March 26, 2004 Posted March 26, 2004 Also worth mentioning the Chants' 1976 offering, "I've Been Trying" on small UK label Chipping Norton. Found 7 unplayed copies for 10p each in a boot market in 1997, sold them to JM for £70, and he sold them for £20 each - as I expected, and I think it's still the going rate!! No it's not Gene you'd be looking at around £40 a pop at least nowadays mate John

FERRIS WHEEL-NO1 GUY(TORCH BIGGIE)-PICCADILLY. KAROL KEYES-ONE IN A MILLION-COLUMBIA. MANCHESTER PLAYBOYS-I FEEL SO GOOD-FONTANA. KEEP 'EM COMING.
Gene-r Posted March 26, 2004 Posted March 26, 2004 Thanks Johnny 1T - £40?? Didn't realise it was still that sought after!! What's this Foundations track on Psycho (Change My Life) from 1978?? Anyone know it? Must be good, if it's commanding megabucks. Then there's "Ragtime Girl" by Jimmy Helms on Pye from 1973. Again, one I don't know much about, other than its high price tag (probably £60 - £80). Anyone shed some light on these two? Gene
