mshoals Posted December 6, 2008 Posted December 6, 2008 (edited) I always thought Big Maybelle's classic 2-sider Let Me Go/No Better For You was only released on the Port label, but today a copy on Rojac arrived in the mail. Is this an original? I can't find any references to the Rojac release in any discography or the JM guide? If it is, then which one came first, Port 3002 or Rojac 1006? Thanks. pikeys dog Posted December 6, 2008 Posted December 6, 2008 I'd guess that the Rojac is local issue and Port national. Looks kosher to me... just got to find myself one now.. thanks for adding to the wants list...
Dave Moore Posted December 6, 2008 Posted December 6, 2008 Hey Hey! Nice one! Not seen this before. Send it to Dave Rimmer and he'll update the Rojac listing on his SKM website.
Tricky Posted December 6, 2008 Posted December 6, 2008 Chuffin El.Thats whats great about this scene.Have had this on Port for best part of twenty years and never seen it on Rojac! I agree it looks more than real as well.Great stuff. Can somebody now pull out of the bag all those Detroit label number thirteens please.
Mace Posted December 6, 2008 Posted December 6, 2008 Had the Rojac one a few years ago, think I sold it to Karl Bodey from Liverpool for about £30?

I'd say Port came first. Big Maybelle recorded on Rojac 1966 - 68 but the Port 45 is 1965. Edited December 8, 2008 by Matt Male
Guest Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 (edited) This is extremely rare and the first label IMHO, it's produced by the Rojac label owner Jack Taylor also note the Chuck-A-Luck music reference. The music publisher changes on the Port release. Both Port & Rojac were New york based with Port enjoying national distribution through the Jay-Gee set up. The Rojac 1000 series was from 1064 to 1966 The Port release was 1965. Rojac moved to a 3 digit labeling #'s in 1966. I don't think I've ever seen it before, and it's not on any track listings I have, or on my database. Very very RARE a great find, well done. Edited December 9, 2008 by john manship

Thanks John, looks like the Rojac copy is indeed the first release then, as also suggested earlier in the thread. I take it more than £30 rare then??? Nice auction win at $17 then, the current Rojac copy

The earliest Big Maybelle release on Rojac that I could find was #1003 (1964). Were Rojac and Port related in any way? Just a theory: I guess that Rojac 1006 was indeed the first release and leased to Port for national distribution.
