Tommy1 Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 Not sure if thats a good term for it but hey, it does it for me. I seem to have loads of records that have lyrics that talk about the social/political environment of the late 60's/70's. Listening to them now, it makes me realise how little the world has really progressed! For example: ANTONIO CASTRO - Welfare LEROY CLOFER - Mr Big Man GHETTO KITTY - Stand Up And Be Counted FOUR MONITORS - Dark Side Of The Ghetto JOHNNY KING & FATBACK - Peace, Love, Not War WALLY COCO - Message To Society FRANKIE STATON - Speckled Rainbow Love BETHEA THE MASKMAN - Ghetto Love SOUL INJECTIONS - Stay Of The Moon ESSENCE - Black Reflections I would be really interested in other examples from the collectors out there? And what name do you give to this genre of music..? Thanks for starting this tread Paul , I was thinking of doing it myself since I love this kind of stuff. Gonna post some when I get them recorded. Don't know what "label" I would put on it, maybe soul with a message, ghetto soul, "black" consciousness?

And what name do you give to this genre of music..? Love this theme Paul, its a huge part of the black experience, I think I heard or read it termed as PROTEST music somewhere, examples being in particular:- Norman Whitfields psychadelic era stuff "Ball of confusion" "Cloud nine" and "Message from a Black man" and "Smilin Faces" particularly brilliantly done by the Temps also "Ship ahoy" from the Ojays and as illustrated by Jock on here they don,t come any more politically motivated than Gil Scott Heron, one to add from him is the brilliant "B Movie" which tears to bits his favourite target Ronald Reagan. Also worthy of a mention is Johnny Little,s "Gonna get that boat" on Minit. Kev
Paul-s Posted December 8, 2008 Author Posted December 8, 2008 Just checked it myself Paul. Room for a couple more? Four voices-We live in the Ghetto Ascots-Just a few feet from the gutter Two of the best, IMHO Nice one ....forgot all about Ascots!

Kev Yes, Gil Scott is one of the motivators...Home Is Where The Hatred Is and the ultra political 'Bicentenial Blues'.....PROTEST music for sure. As I said, not much in the world has changed!

Souljazera Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 Almost anything by Gil Scott Heron. 'The Bottle' and 'Home is Where The Hatred Is' are obvious but how about 'The Revolution Will Not Be Televised' 'Whitey's On The Moon', 'Not Needed', 'The Klan', '(You Can't Depend On) The Train From Washington', 'Waiting For The Axe To Fall', etc., etc. we almost lost detroit ...probably the most political of gil's outings...its about a near miss nuclear meltdown
