You'll get a much more detailed response from Tony Rounce or Ady Croasdel on this area - they'll know much better than me the ins and outs of the Wand/Sceptre catalogue and distribution set-ups in the 60's I'm sure.

However, I can recommend a few books if you liked the Stax one (which is excellent in my opinion - I met Rob Bowman last year). Try these:-

Exploding: The Highs, Hits, Hype, & Hustlers Of The Warner Music Group - Stan Cornyn

Off The Record: An Oral History Of Popular Music - Joe Smith

The Sound Of The City: The Rise Of Rock N' Roll - Charlie Gillett

Making Tracks: The History Of Atlantic Records - Charlie Gillet

Clive: Inside The Record Business - Clive Davis

There's loads of others but they tend to deal more with Rock/Pop acts and more recent times. The 'Exploding' book is a great read if you're into the history of Warner Brs and record company politics!

Hi Ian, that is the single best reply i've ever read on here, thanks mate, i'm gonna' try and get all of these, i love to read (books in general) i've done all the main soul related books (ie.associated to the labels artists etc, not the" Northern scene" variety) great to actually know someone who can pass on this sort of related information.

Awesome track Brett - enjoyed dancing to it at Sheffield when you spun it earlier this year - check out the Donny Hataway version on his "Live" album - it's blinding.

Thanks Andy, any recommendation of yours is always worth following through, i've seen the album but haven't got it, so thats another on the wants list.

Yes Mik it did, but like i mentioned the album is 5.21 long, i have the 45' but it really doesn't do the song justice, the single is 2.35, and it's the remaining 3 mins is where Sakinah Muhammad's vocal goes to a different stratosphere, hence the reason i posted it on the album thread, the finer part of the song (vocally) isn't on the 45'.

Think the 45' is around the 70-100 mark ? (not sure), album.God Knows.. (but once again, if you get the song get the album version.

( or go whole hog and get both.....then never play the 45' )

Brett, I disagree with you - Sheffield is quite a nice station as stations go and I'm sure everyone at Ponds Forge had washed But as you had bunked off work early here's the deal. If it doesn't get a bid on it, you can have it for Christmas....that's my last and final offer Getting back on topic - the Main Ingredient's 'Happiness is just around the bend' did come out on 45 but was much shortened. Their version on the 'Euphrates River' LP is mind bending....as is the full length version of 'Walk Away From Love' by a certain Mr D Ruffin - the 45 has been snipped and tucked. Laters
