Jr Walker - clinging to the thought that she's coming back.

Four Tops - no more water in the well.

Bobby Taylor - it's growing.

Linda Jones - you cant take it.

Detroit Spinners - what more could a boy ask for.

Marvin Gaye - it's a bitter pill to swallow.

" " - seek and you shall find.

" " - so long.

Hesitations - push a little bit harder.

Williams & Watson - ain't gonna move.

Capitols - I got to handle it.

Bobby Taylor - blues in the night.

Bobby Bland - sweet lips of joy.

" " - one horse town.

Burnley's always good for me.

Few there I don't know. Always championed Seek and You Shall Find. Prefer the Isley Bros version. Much underplayed IMO.

Kev, I was replying to Joe, the Hesitations - push a little bit harder. you can't know them all, they are load's of tunes on Frence/German etc Ep's that did'nt come out on British/American 45's.

To make it even more confusing - "The Hesitations - push a little bit harder" Did come out on a 45!

UK London - it was the flip side to "Born Free" which was also the title track to the LP it featured on.

Superb tune's, I played the Isley's 'aint that real satisfaction' and six folk asked me what it was, they were only 15 in at the time, very underplayed IMO, well I was on 7-30pm to 8.00pm .

4 TOPS & SUPREMES - JUST A LITTLE HONEY - TAMLA MOTOWN... sorry, but this doesn't hold a candle to the Gladys Knight & The Pips version, which may be among the best things she's ever done!

I was reading the Pinnacle thread and you seem to know a bit about the business. I've read 'Death of Rhythm' & Blues and 'The History of Stax records' etc etc but could do with more info. What would be the market coverage of say a The Tempests, Maxine Brown, Chuck Jackson or Garnet Mimms album as opposed to The Miracles or The Tams etc. Any ideas???

You'll get a much more detailed response from Tony Rounce or Ady Croasdel on this area - they'll know much better than me the ins and outs of the Wand/Sceptre catalogue and distribution set-ups in the 60's I'm sure.

However, I can recommend a few books if you liked the Stax one (which is excellent in my opinion - I met Rob Bowman last year). Try these:-

Exploding: The Highs, Hits, Hype, & Hustlers Of The Warner Music Group - Stan Cornyn

Off The Record: An Oral History Of Popular Music - Joe Smith

The Sound Of The City: The Rise Of Rock N' Roll - Charlie Gillett

Making Tracks: The History Of Atlantic Records - Charlie Gillet

Clive: Inside The Record Business - Clive Davis

There's loads of others but they tend to deal more with Rock/Pop acts and more recent times. The 'Exploding' book is a great read if you're into the history of Warner Brs and record company politics!

I've read the Charlie Gillet ones but the Clive Davis might be a good one to read after the Stax one as that's how it finished with the CBS deal and collapse of Stax.
