Im into northern soul .does this site want to dismiss the northern soul aspect and just concentrate on the rare soul scene. if so drop the northern soul aspect . Im not really into the rare, modern or obscure soul scene , but a good proportion of the content on this site concerns northern soul . and the majority of venues discussed on here are northern soul venus ,so is this forum based on false pretences. as for my post to which you seem to object, it is my opinion. and am prepared to stand by what I posted. I dont attend venues to listen to the big name djs in fact certain djs names appearing on the flyer would put me off attending. thought this scene was about the music and the artists not celebrity djs and big name collectors (buyers and sellers) but being a mere punter I suppose my views dont count

Guest Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 So your saying the Top DJs such as Butch Mick H etc have an inferiority complex cos they play OVO and spend thousands on there love of music. I dont think so. Thats why its a privelege to travel the length and breadth of the country to hear these guys play out. Thought this scene was based on Rare Soul Music NO NO NO!!!! - you obviously didnt read the thread (especially what my post was in response to). my reply was to the mis-spelling on the previous post that said IMPOTANT JESUS H CHRIST - as someone else put in this thread words to the effect of "are you not allowed to have a laugh on this forum" TALK ABOUT SOUL SNOBS

The bottom line here is, that anybody who doesnt fall into line with your persona isnt a "Northern Soul" devotee, fan, call it what you will. Thus showing your snobbery towards other Members on this site. I dont know you, but i would be able to hazard a guess as to events you attend. All well and good but just because you only want to listen to the same 50-100 tracks, which we have all probably got as much pleasure out of in the past as you do now, dont knock at me and the people who listen to and dance to more recently discovered Uptempo and Mid-Tempo music.

So at the end of the day eg Burnley it will be almost 100% Uptempo 60s Rare and Underplayed with some recent discoveries and a smattering of the Top 500 classic oldies, so basically all punters know what they gonna get at there chosen venue. Im sure if you were to attend Burnley, Middleton, Lifeline you would certainly here some bright, shiny, new to your ears, worth dancing to music. What i took exception to was way you dismissed Butch and Mick H who are at the cutting edge of this scene, when it comes to Quality, not forgetting at the end of the day they are all Oldies, sum a lot less played and fresher than others. Yocki lovely fella, did a spot at our place not so long back and showed his darker side At the end of the day a lot of venues keep there punters happy by adhering to a classic oldies policy and not denying it they are in the majority. I just applaud the events i attend for there music policies. No need for any backbiting or snobbery, we only pass this way once Regards Paul

Im into northern soul .does this site want to dismiss the northern soul aspect and just concentrate on the rare soul scene. if so drop the northern soul aspect . What's the difference between Rare Soul and Northern Soul - are they not one and the same e.g. danceable soul music, new discoveries, some oldies, obscurities and known etc. Perhaps I missed the change when I took some time off in the 90s but from 78 up to 94 all the nighters I went to that had a progressive play list were Northern Soul. Stafford, 100 Club, Tony's Blackburn, Oddfellows, Parr Hall, Allenton etc etc etc - were they not Northern Soul? Is this a case of the nostalgia scene claiming the term Northern Soul only for themselves?

Guest sarahleen Posted October 20, 2009 Posted October 20, 2009 at probably my second or third time id been to wigan i was on the dancefloor when the dj played a tune that just ,well, blew my head off , i danced to it but didnt know the name of the song or the artist , with hindsight it was probably something 97 % of the people there already new. spying a geeky looking fellow at the side of the floor i ran over to him and said "please , what was that last song called and who is it by ? " he looked at me with such a mixture of horror , pity and disgust on his face that i wanted the ground to swallow me up . he then pointedly turned away and refused to have anything more to do with me . i was absolutely crestfallen and came to the decision right there and then that i would never be a n.s. collector or collector of any music genre for that matter and therefore i would never be a dj. something i had considered as i come from a very n.soul and popular music family . soooooo chaps , if a woman at a venue comes up to you in a dark corner and walls you up, grabbing you by the balls and says " you ruined my career now , SAY (*squeezes harder *) YOUR (* harder*) SORRY " , its me and the person in this story is you and you sir was once a soul snob.

Russ Vickers Posted October 20, 2009 Posted October 20, 2009 your right , they may be dinosaurs, but still have the snobbery of thinking new stuff in not northern. To me a soul snob will look down their nose at a soul fan dancing to a popular well played easily available record , the problem is mr. dancer is enjoying himself whilst the snob has a face like he's / she's just "followed through" so to speak. Think this would depend on how good the record was...........wouldnt be the first time I've followed thru whilst enjoying myself........... lol. Russ
Wrongcrowd Posted October 20, 2009 Posted October 20, 2009 Ive just discovered you can grow herbs all year round indoors, its magic. Wow! That's amazing Paul, and I have to say far more interesting than the same old regurgitated arguements that spin around on the site.....does Oregano grow indoors...that's my favourite...
Russ Vickers Posted October 20, 2009 Posted October 20, 2009 A "Soul Snob" IMHO are SOME of the OVO lot, ie those who have the attitude "If you can't afford it you CANT hear it!"... The same people who would happily subscribe to a OV 'Hit Squad' of specialy sworn in stormtroopers going around the country in an open-top 4 seater Mercedes 'raiding' venues to check DJ's record boxes for boots, Carvers, pressings or 2nd issue's (1'st issue's are Ok if the night is free to get in) Imagine being are your local Soul Nite when........ The music stops, the lights go on, and a guy in a long leather coat and jack boots grabs the microphone and announces.... "Good Evening, My name in SS Groupenfurher Schmitd ov ze OV Hit squad - ZIS IS A RAID. please place any and all recorded material on ze tables in front you for inspection by my officers, Escape is impossible - for you ze Soul nite is over" ..... at which point the doors burst open and in walk a couple of the above stormtroopers with two specially trained Sniffer dogs who can tell the difference between Vinyl, Acetate, Styrene and plastic...... The next days event report would read....... Another great night at 'Local Soul', numbers were a little down this month, however two guest DJ's were arrested by the 'OVO hit squad' and their record boxes sent away for forensic examination - two further DJ's were shot while trying to escape through the toilet window, Next of kin have been informed. Yep totally agree, i'll pull the trigger, cant afford the real thing dont feckin' DJ...simples !!!. Russ
Wayoutgirl Posted October 20, 2009 Posted October 20, 2009 Personally have always preferred the oldies and love the Redemption room at Prestatyn as did Mr M's in the late 70's, Do not attend nighters due to having my kids later in life; Does this make me a bad person if I can only get out to a venue on average once a month and then savour every moment on the dance floor? would rather see people having a good time than an empty dance floor. Life's too short enjoy it while you can!
Sleeps45 Posted October 20, 2009 Posted October 20, 2009 Who me a snob...Rosy reckons I'm more like a Knob than a snob.hahahahahhahahahahahahhahahahahah.. HEY NEEDLE TO THE GROOVE !! MY HOMETOWN FREMONT CALIFORNIA !!!!!! OK SOUL SNOB..RICH ROSEN WAX TRAX VEGAS....SORRY RICH
Guest familytree Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 It wawawawasn't me, HONEST. ah that dave!!!!!!!!!!!! sorry hun... shocking for names x hope to see you soon, you going the tower? xx
Dave Moore Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 Yep totally agree, i'll pull the trigger, cant afford the real thing dont feckin' DJ...simples !!!. Russ Or.....find something 'interesting' that you can afford and play that. Even Simpler!
Guest aintgotit Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 (edited) my definition of a soul snob would be someone who thinks they are an authority on what is 'soul' and what isn't. Like they have the exact parameters worked out by some scientific process. Often known to say things like 'that's not soul, that's disco, that's not soul that's r&b, that's not soul that's pop' etc. The kind of people who would dislike a record for being by a white singer while happily listening to 'official 100% black artist' tunes all night, despite many of them having no discernable tune The oldies crowd i would say are the opposite, they'd climb over a pile of great soulful records because they dont sound like Norhern to get to a copy of some nasty 70s instrumental by Biddu or someone i like you. well said. isnt that a type of dance too by the way ? i mean d,you biddu? or you,ll sometimes hear said, hhhm, not keen on it,its too dubi duBiddu for my likin. Edited October 22, 2009 by whatsthiscalled
Hammersoul Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 IM A SOUL SNOB...or so IM told If you only buy original vinyl ,If I spend my time searching for and researching the music I love and study the history and openly admit to knowing a wee bit about my music and the labels , artists, producers, cat numbers......anorak stuff then IM A SNOB this is according to some on the scene who dont know and dont care and play bootlegs. SAY NO MORE...IM PROUD TO BE A SNOB THEN SNOBS'R'US Looks like i`m in that soul snob club Have to disagree with you Richie on lp only tracks, sometimes there`s other good records on the lp/Or the 7" is like West Ham getting a home win this season. Think the o.v. o hats would take off in soul nights
