What's your definition of a soul snob.

is it someone who...

wont attend local events (handbaggers in attendance )

wont attend nighters (been there done that)

wont listen to any new sounds ( not true northern)

whats your thoughts....

SIMPLE

A snob is surely someone who looks down there nose at others and in general thinks they are a better person than those who they consider below them??

and to add to that 'one' must take into account the following:

snobs close ranks to exclude those they percieve as 'below' them, often by developing elaborate social codes, symbolic status and recognisable marks of language

Think I'd be P.S.S.S.S.D off with that name though? laugh.gif

Di Dave,

Did you see any soul snob's at Drax last saturday?. All I saw was a packed house and very busy dance floor dancing to music from the days of the Wheel and Torch through to releases from this decade.A great night of good music and friendly people. So if anyone does not want to attend events because they do not meet their personel ideals.,that is their loss, although I would only refer these people to being snobbish, if they criticised those who ran and attended such events just because it did not suit their own ideals.

I beg to differ, but the old Wheel and Torch boys I first started going to 'niters with all had scooters, and there was nothing 'plastic' about them! (any one from York who remembers Al Tatt and Joe 90 will know you wouldn't dare call them anything disparaging! )

one can ride a scoot and still love the music

one can catch a 68 bus and still love the music thumbsup.gif all i was saying was that a 'soul snob' would possibly dismiss the notion of a scooter rider being a 'real' soulie

no offence to Al Tatt, Joe 90 or any other scooterists, i dont give a toss what anyone is into - if you love the music you love the music. But i think that the very idea that a thread has been started asking what is the definition of a 'soul snob' suggest that they do exist - we only have to read some of the self opinionated views on soul forums to see that :P

no matter what scene you are into, you will always get:

people who have a high opinion of themselves

those who look down on others

old timers who have done it all

youngens who are going to change the world

imho we have all been guilty at one time or another of passing comment on someone about their knowledge ,dancin .,the way one dresses . etc.

its human nature

in its worst form its snobbery

People who look down on you for having some opinon they don't agree with especially in music taste

and tv well that's the problem, Paul O'Grady started it again when he talked about Northern Soul as lots of snobs thought this is not the way to go about it but look to a lot of people they don't know Wigan Casino or what Frank Wilson record was so for them to hear and see just shows what parts of Northern soul is and trust me does all your non soul friends know this

Posted

i suppose like most things in life its not black and white.....

a soul snob is not a particular type of soulie into one particular way of life....but more a way of thinking ..

its easiest to call someone who searches for undiscovered originals and doesnt want to dance to do i love you anymore a snob .....but surely only if he looks down on those who still love frank wilson and baggy trousers because....

there are those 'nostagia' loving soulies who look down on those looking for undiscovered different sounds....or modern...or rnb....and so on...

so its not what soul you are into more how you see those who arent

When we have 5 decades of music under the heading of 'Northern Soul' its not realy one scene its probably half a dozen .

With everyone following the one that apeals to them the most. There are not too many who can say 'I like it all'.

This has been going on for years , the Ian Levine thing and The 60's newies of the 80's spring to mind , It was very aparent in the 80's with people choosing to stay away instead of giving the new stuff a chance ,but now the quality of a lot of the Stafford stuff that was dissmissed as 'new crap' has shone through over the last 10 or 15 years and is played alongside regular 'oldies'.

A lot of people on the scene today are those who went to Wigan in the seventies , left , did the family thing and came back wanting to listen to same stuff as they did then , this makes it easy for promoters to make a few quid (fair play).

I suppose all you need to do is pick your venues , there are more soul nites and allnighters now than there ever was so theres no need to listen to too much music that doesnt apeal to you.

If you would have replaced that nasty word "SNOB" and asked the question - define a soul connoisseur (s)....then.

That's different or is it  .

Any esoteric scene

had ter look this one up and still puzzledEsoteric knowledge, in the dictionary (non-scholarly) sense, is thus that which is available only to a narrow circle of "enlightened", "initiated", or specially educated people.[2] Esoteric items may be known as esoterica.[3] In contrast, exoteric knowledge is knowledge that is well-known or public; or perceived as informally canonic in society at large.

In Western, English-speaking societies today, the term "esotericism" is not necessarily used in the sense of mystical knowledge or practice, but rather informally to mean any perception or knowledge that is difficult to understand or remember, such as theoretical physics, or that pertains to the minutiae of a particular discipline, such as "esoteric" baseball statistics.

Cracked up the other week when somebody mentioned on here that playing tracks from albums (from releases that were also released as 45's) was apparently considered 'bad form',

has it come to this? Surely if it's a kosher release in either format it's got to be spun out ain't it? :D

I mean seriously, get a grip.

:D Catriona, thanks for pointing that out to me. Somebody could've shot me (with a genuine Luger) for committing a social soul blunder - 'bad form' to play tracks from albums???? So that's Clyde McPhatter 'One More Chance' and that Freddy Butler thing on Kapp out the window then unsure.gif Dear oh me....I thought I was a crashing snob for being able to name obscure French dishes made with animals stomach lining but a soul snob - um....I like everything, almost - is that a soul faux pas too far. I'm for the Soul Firing Squad - hand me the blindfold and remember to play 'Make Sure' at my burial and pass on my Matrix Magnifying Glass to the next deserving music lover....Goodbye Cruel Soul World ph34r.gif ....damn, I've got to be at Stafford on Saturday - shoot me after that :D

i did wonder why the big hang up with some people about OVO - perhaps it's an inferiority complex and they need to prove something in other areas to make up for the lack elswhere :lol::lol:

Jo, you have to pay more attention :) It's about playing tracks that are available on 45 off an album. NOT "album only tracks".

But I recall you being snobbish yourself! Remember what you said many many years ago about certain german DJ's playing german cover versions of lousy english pop songs at allnighters? :(

Oh no....you've just plunged me into trauma :( German cover versions of lousy english pop songs.....I thought I'd buried that at the back of my brain - I probably said 'this is a pile of shite'.....was I that polite?
