Funnily enough i spent quite a bit of the last Southport weekender in the company of Yogi..

The one wish i have of Southport is that they bring back the Northern soul couple of hours, for the simple reason the majority of the people there have never, nor will ever come across it. They did it with the Jazz on Saturday afternoon. I know TJ and AD do the usual oldies on a Saturday afternoon but sometimes it's bordering on cringeworthy.

Things move on and the BBar is mobbed with youngsters that want to hear MrScruff, Spinna, Ron Trent, Moodyman, Theo Parrish, Rahaan etc.. Maybe not playing what you and the rest of the "Soul" scene recognise as "Soul" but it is none the less and they're doing it their way without the overbearing influence of a "Soul" scene that places the emphasis on rarity of records rather than they're quality.

Too base an opinion on the Southport weekender by going once in how many years is ridiculous, it's an ever changing experience and long may it remain so. It's sold out every time and the only way i can see it coming to an end is when the camp is demolished. Which if the stories are correct won't be that long away. 2 maybe 3 years as it's been sold off for redevelopment.

Good reply miss-tree

I've "twigged" on to who you are now.

Still think Southport has lost its direction as a soul venue and is only paying lipservice to the (few) older punters who have been there from the early days. With the exit of Richard Searling think things will go down the pan (Soul wise) even quicker. Alex has relied on major sponsorship and has built a superb brand in Southport, however as these sponsors now withdraw their support "There may be trouble ahead". Hope not , but wait and see.

Had this discussion with Yogi a few weeks back (who I know you know) and as you say i probably know alot less about this genre of music than others, but you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink ! As I said i did buy into it, chasing the latest 12's for a while, I still buy bulk- if they are cheap enough-and sit and play through them when i have time.

As for a "scene" you'll have to book your small venue and play to the 30 or so enlightened Souls who frequent this site. We are always looking for somewhere new to go.

However, as my last word on this thread, I think the way forward for myself and karen is SOUL music and a venue that features LIVE Soul acts in an intimate setting, that is where my money is going nowadays. (see our "What if" thread)

In the natural progression of stuff, keeping it soulful and being true to our SOUL biggrin.gif

Rob

You cant leave it there!... who am I, who are you? ha... absolutely no problem with you knowing what you and karen enjoy musically/socially, we obviously enjoy some of the same places for us to know each other? just got caught up in Barrys initial thread and the reaction it caused. instead of listening to the tune and commenting it was a blanket reaction to house not being soulful etc and that is nonsense. On the southport front i think the back room was getting a bit stale personally. Or oldies are dwindling so perhaps numbers dont merit the room? dont know to be honest, Im in the Beat bar most of the time :P love it! As for it dying off... sponsors or not the place is always booked up and there is no indication that will change... just room for new sponsors, you can never sit on your laurels and i think alex has ridden financial storms before and on the case. The 'scene' I enjoy is healthy... southport proves that as does the hilton and other events I go to.... There are lots of like minded people out there, just not many our age i guess! no suprise there then! goodnight x

This notion of (early) house being an evolution has been harped about for so long. House was at very best, a RAPTURE out of modern if anything. A different genre from northern and only remotely similar vibes to soul in general. Fact is Wigan did evolve, it evolved at Stafford and beyond through the dark ages of the late 80's / early 90s. Emerging back to its golden era via various London venues including the Dome, Notre Dame etc. Just only have to go the 100 Club with its constant churn of unreleased discoveries, Lifeline with its fresh 70s and funky/northern beats and Burnley with its prolific output of uptempo 60s Newies and Obscurities. This IS THE evolution of the Wigan era. Not controlled, just natural. Some misguided souls just lost their way into house once upon time, thats all.

Thats how I see it.

Bit of a strange choice to post up as an example of a house record someway related to soul music? QH has done many quality productions with vocals which fit into the uptempo end of the modern soul scene , this is the side of his work that is very far removed from, and makes no attempt to make any claim that it is in any way, a soul recording? this is clearly a house record end of.

I'd have thought maybe you could have posted something like 'Angel' or 'Traveling', or one of his remixes like Alicia Keys 'Diary' or Luther 'Apologize' as a better example of something that may cross over into the soul scene?

cheers Sutty

The track I posted is what Quentin is at heart about, you would know that if you had followed his productions - the vocal arrangements he does, no doubt he enjoys, but are mainly aimed at earning a coin.

At no point did I say that I thought this track should be played at a Soul all nighter btw.

I set questions like this thread opener simply to gauge where the general Soulie is up to regards black music, as that is all this is - a black mans outpouring - maybe too much for some but nothing more than black Americans have done for years.

For the people that reply with a certain venomous sincerity, you don't shake me as I know where I am and I'm happy with that.

There seems to be a general train of thought that if you listen to anything but 'safe' music on here that detracts from your Soulful credentials.

Don't be silly.

Black music is a feeling, always has been, if you haven't kept up with it's movements then I can expect nothing less than some of the above replies.

I'm not stupid, nor any less a Soul lover for posing questions to what I thought would be interested parties - please stop taking petty pot-shots at me and my questions on what you obviously see as easy-meat questions.

I take it this question would have been acceptable if I posted it in the 'Freebasing' section, as to some it has nothing to do with Soul music?

See it for what it is, an innocent bloody question asking for feed-back - if it's not for you fair enough but don't get all het up.

I'm here loving black music just like you.

People always seem to confuse the 90's Club-House scene (Sasha, Hacienda, the late Cream era etc) with what became Soulful House (four to the floor 'House' music that is deemed acceptable on this scene) - I feel silly saying it as it so obvious but wtf did that time ever have to do with the black music scene?

I'll tell you what. Nowt.

I've posted decent nouveau US tracks on here and had responses to them such as 'Pill Music', as a sensible reply ??? - then I read posts from supposed Soulies quoting nonsense posts about the 90's club scene that don't get any flak.

There was white European trash and there was relevant black music played in the 90's, I played the latter and I think I still do - if you don't see it, then that's fine but don't blow a gasket, just reply in an adult manner.

I've not got the hump btw, I've had a cracking night but I can see that I'm going to have to go through this thread with a fine tooth-comb as when a thread get like this it seems that my original post gets a little warped along the way.

Arse.
