60's New York Labels

I think you've got Mercury on the list for the wrong city. The label was started in Chicago in the 40s and I just checked an Ohio Players album from the 70s and it was still Chicago based. The parent company (Polygram) might have been based in the Big Apple, Mercury was in Chicago til at least the late 70s.

Fantastic list! yet I found some entries that might be not correct:

goldwax (Memphis)

Jet-set (D.C.)

MGM (LA?)

Spokane (Detroit?)

Tac-ful (California)

Tangerine Record Company (TRC) (pretty sure it was West coast based)

Unart (same as United Artists)

United Artists (pretty sure this was West Cost based as well, at least UA itself was from Hollywood)

Upfront

Uptite (Philly? or DC?)

wayout (ohio? Or is this a different way out label)

What do you think?

Spokane (Detroit?) No, NYC

Tac-ful (California)

Unart (same as United Artists)

Upfront

WAY OUT indeed is Ohio

Uptite is NYC (the yellow label that had Tail-Feathers on)

UA is NYC

Unart is not the same label, its a subsidary

Tangerine is defo West coast although it had a distribution deal with ABC (thru the Ray Charles connection..)

Tac-Ful I believe to be NYC thru the Roosevelt Grier connection (hew as from NYC, wasn`t he ?)

Spokane is NYC although Johnny Mae AMtthews "Worried About You" for example was recorded in Detroit

MGM was NYC based but of course leased a lot all across the US

Jet Set was NYC...maybe people get confused because of the Eddie Singelten/Washington connection...?

Gold Wax of course is as much Southern as it can get

Uptite is NYC (the yellow label that had Tail-Feathers on) (The "Superlatives" Uptite label was Philly as far as I remember...)

Unart is not the same label, its a subsidary (am not too sure about that but you're probably right)

Tac-Ful I believe to be NYC thru the Roosevelt Grier connection (hew as from NYC, wasn`t he ?) (Tac-Ful is Hollywood, Cal. At least that what it says on the label)

Jet Set was NYC...maybe people get confused because of the Eddie Singelten/Washington connection...? (Andy Rix' article on Shrine mentions that E. Singleton leased some tracks to Jet Set, that being another local DC label, doesn't it?)

You remember right, thats why I added yellow label that had the Tail-Feathers on...

If it says so on the label than it will be correct

Yeah I forgot that, there were two different Uptite labels. The "Superlatives" one was Jersey (not Philly), the other one ("Tail-Feathers" and "Ronnie Goodson") were NY. I mixed them up as both labels had releases in yellow and blue.

Then there was 3rd Uptite label (e.g. "125th St. Candy Store") which I don't think was connected to the other two, at least the numbering system doesn't fit in.

Tail Feathers, Ronnie Goodson, and Superlatives are all on the same Uptite label and I would say it's from Jersey City, NJ. 125th Street Candy Store on Uptite is NY.
