Was the modern scene ever as good as those early days?, not for me, gotta tell you i shed a few tears playin' those tunes, tears of joy and elation that those records still give me all these years later. OH! HAPPY DAYS. the thing is that nowadays you could "re-activate" half of the above and they would be new sounds to half the audience. only the tip of the iceberg too as lots more to go at. they were great then and i'm sure wud sound great today coming out of the decks.

I assume this is Paul Collinson, if so good to hear from you, your name has come up in conversation a number of times over years, I am very friendly with Cheryl, originally from Selby, who you knew. You and Kieth (?) from Keighley were among my original musical mentors, long time ago mate. so thanks for that (I think!). Hope you are well. I was fortunate as at the time Arthur was in the process of selling some stuff, and through Chris Plant, who took a lot of big 60's stuff i was able to get a Cheryl Berdell and Pages (still c/u at the time, the Pages remained so until well into '82) At the time i turned down the Daybreak, i was so into other stuff at trhe time that it was not a top priority(remember i'm also the guy who wouldn't buy the Cashmeres for £20 as i said it was played out. DERRRRRR!!!).I also got my Jimmy McFarland in the same deal. There are so many wonderful tunes, lots semi if not more forgotten by all but those priveleged few who were there at that exciting bountiful time. And it may stretch the meaning of the term "modern" as many are approaching their 30th birthday, but they deserve to be played out, would you not agree??

I think it will be the very same Jock as Pam and I were best mates at Wigan, funny enough just got an email off her, having not seen her for many years. I was from Musselburgh then though, not Dundee, I just talked equally funny! Thought it was Keith, he had reddish hair, slightish fellow always wore denim jacket and jeans, was always head of the game musically then, pretty sure he came to the Wigan Tiffs do also, he went regular to Rotherham but then faded off. Ernie Andrews Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 (edited) Hi went to wigan 73 to 77+ nearly every weekend only missed if I was going on holiday, at that time in my life that is all I lived for spent most of my wages on records from derek guest record shop in farnworth ( Bolton ) then had to go home to face my mother and tell her yet again I'd just spent my keep on records. The main thing which I will always remember is pushing open the door into the main room and the heat, the Atmosphere of hundreds of people dancing and the sound of I'll be there by the gems blasting out of the speakers filled me with goose bumps and made every hair on my neck stand on end. It does'nt matter whether you went in 73 or 79 the main thing is you went and like me you all will have memory's of what a fantastic place it was I made loads of great friends, heard great music but like most people around 77/78 I got married need I say more - house, mortgage, Kids my wigan days where over. lost touch with everyone - Been back on the scene a few years now if you remember me or any of the gang from Farnwoth please reply. Sharon I cant for the life of me remember the nighter i went to in worcester/redditch, ive got memory loss must be my age!! lol, i spent alot of time down in redditch tho staying at Sharons with her sister, i can remember her dad was a prison officer as was my dad and we'd hide in her bedroom every morning so her dad wouldnt find us wide awake (know what i mean?)!! lol, those were great days. I was a regular at Wigan as i only lived an hour away thats where i met sharon and Wagsy and crew there was a guy called Simon from brum too, do you know him? Me and the Lancaster crowd used to sit on the left near the stage (when i was stationery)!!. I havent been to a nighter for years due to family comitments but im up for it now and have found a few freinds from the past on you tube and we are all organising to go to the May 09 nighter at Morecambe for a reunion, i honestly cant wait. At the risk of sounding somewhat Nostalgic and incurring the usual "Why can't you move on" type comments, would there not be the scope/demand for a 'Proper' Wigan revival night somewhere - ie one that doesn't involve Shopping Centres or some sad faxcimile of what people 'think' were the popular tracks at Wigan?... I've been to a few supposed Wigan revival/anniversary type nights down the years and TBH was VERY disappointed by all of them, all I got was the usual Frank Wilson, MVP's, Sandi Sheldon played on the hour-Every hour, and 95% of the above tracks remained in their boxes - Now OK I know it's next to impossible to cram 8 years of music into the average 4-5 hour 'Soul nite', but given the clear interest shown in this thread would it not be beyond the realms of possibility that someone could pick up the torch as it were (no pun intended) and put on a 'Proper' Wigan Casino nite?.. I can remember it was at a night club that had a double Decker bus on the top floor where they served food I don't think I ever got that smashed to just dreamt that ! ...................Thinking about it I keep getting the name Deville's or something like that all the Wigan jocks where on I think . Phyllis Hyman, Cecil Washington and Court Davis in the same spot.... awesome.....

Only to well aware of RS's playlists from this period as 'I Don't Like To Lose' is proberbly my all time fave 'Northern' Track, sadly however he did Jock at an early Casino Anniversary night I went to at the King Georges Hall in Blackburn - and after waiting for most of the evening for his spot in anticipation of hearing some of the great tracks listed on this thread - you can understand my 'slight' disappointment when his first track was...... yep you've guessed it 'Frank Wilson' followed by Dana Vallery - BOTH of which had been played in the previous spot (both these tracks were played at least 5 times each over the evening). to be fair he did throw a couple of 'his' decent tracks in, but on the whole the spot was little better than what you can buy on any Wigan Montage type CD in the bargain bucket at the local Tesco. I can only imagine he was perhaps 'under orders' of the promoters of this event to keep it 'simple' as the rest of the evenings music was in a very similar vein, still it was rather sad though to see one of the greatest ever jocks on the scene open his spot with 'Do I Love You' Oh, and needless to say I've never been back since.
Guest Soultown andy Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 He is the promoter of king georges blackburn which makes it all the more disapointing.But its a very succsessful venue so horses for courses.Have tried several times to get richard to dj at various venues and even tho ive known him for nearly 30 years,and have been practicaly neighbours for the same amount of time he is just not interested in the northern scene these days,shame but still the best of all time.

Perhaps because of the size of the venue the 'numbers' thing becomes more important hence perhaps trying to appeal to a wider audience as possible - hence keeping the playlist on the 'safe' side. it's just I was maybe expecting a little more from such a great DJ.

Perhaps because of the size of the venue the 'numbers' thing becomes more important hence perhaps trying to appeal to a wider audience as possible - hence keeping the playlist on the 'safe' side. it's just I was maybe expecting a little more from such a great DJ. Well the Casino was on the large side...and during 79-81...RC didnt comprimise his playlists during that period at all..he certainly didnt play it safe.....one of the most left field DJs during those days...he was the Pied Piper..and we supported him musically...aaah the passsage of time eh ....Delxxxx

Wiganer1 Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 Only to well aware of RS's playlists from this period as 'I Don't Like To Lose' is proberbly my all time fave 'Northern' Track, sadly however he did Jock at an early Casino Anniversary night I went to at the King Georges Hall in Blackburn - and after waiting for most of the evening for his spot in anticipation of hearing some of the great tracks listed on this thread - you can understand my 'slight' disappointment when his first track was...... yep you've guessed it 'Frank Wilson' followed by Dana Vallery - BOTH of which had been played in the previous spot (both these tracks were played at least 5 times each over the evening). to be fair he did throw a couple of 'his' decent tracks in, but on the whole the spot was little better than what you can buy on any Wigan Montage type CD in the bargain bucket at the local Tesco. I can only imagine he was perhaps 'under orders' of the promoters of this event to keep it 'simple' as the rest of the evenings music was in a very similar vein, still it was rather sad though to see one of the greatest ever jocks on the scene open his spot with 'Do I Love You' Oh, and needless to say I've never been back since. ============ used to get really excited in the early stoke days when Richard used to dj there in the main room - but it was clear then as it was at blackpool tower he is not really interested in northern anymore his spots at the ritz niters in manchester were great however

Gob Bless him he was a star! Persil tickets - oh fond memories! With Mike Fletcher (Fletch), Tim Bone (Bonie) and many others we used to plan on a weekly basis who's parents were buying the Persil so we could get the two in one offer. Magic!
