Anybody else see it today? Football Focus did a profile of Wigan Athletic ans kicked it off by showing the Casino from the outside and somme footage of dancers within to a soundtrack Of Frank Wilson - Do I Love You! Apparently according to FF, until the Athletic have become almost promoted the Casino was Wigan's main claim to fame

Really? so it's a shame that the 'ordinary' folk of Wigan didn't realise this, in retrospect, does that mean that when they use to chase us down to the doors of the Casino from the train station, was that only to make sure that they kept up the reputation of having the most popular and best disco or was it basically to kick our heads in and keep their town pure and untainted of soulies and our wicked and wanton ways !!!!! :):rolleyes: Del xx

I saw it (still waiting for Northampton Town on cult heroes). Apparently, the director of Saturday Night Fever (whose name escapes me) visited the Casino and the film is based on the ol' place.

When I was at Birmingham Poly (79-81) I shared a house with a bloke from Wigan and he hated Northern Soul (and I wasn't into it then if the truth be known  ). He reckon's the Casino was knocked down to make way for the only ring road in the country that would have gone straight through the middle of town! I think they are still waiting.

We were both huge football fans. His main team was Liverpool and Wigan Ath were his second team. My main team was, and still is Northampton Town and I also used to watch Irthlingborough Diamonds. Little did we think back then, that both teams, who at the time were non-league would both be league teams a couple of decades later (Irthlingborough as Rushden & Diamonds). Some people Cobblers fans would argue that Diamonds will always be non-league.

Nick Cohn wrote the article "Tribal Rites Of A New Saturday Night" for the New Yorker magazine after he moved there from London. It came out of a search for a dancer he had seen at a New York club. I don't know why John Badham would have gone to Wigan when New York had some great clubs.
