Haydn Posted April 22, 2005 Posted April 22, 2005 It doesn't matter what place I visit I like to have a "guid pruck" and last week I found a box of 12" priced at 10 for £5. Should have bought a pair of pants prior to looking in the box though.. Chuck Jackson - All over the world, Nightmare. Another copy doesn't go a miss. Upfront 9 album including a rare groove 12" of Loleatta Holloway's Runaway. Smokey Robinson - Love don't give me no reason, Motown. Joyce Sims - Come into my life album with nice Barbara Acklin cover " Love makes a woman. Streetsounds Comp with Lew Kirkton - Just can't get enough, nice. Mary Love-comer - Caught up 12" CoLove Records. Jay Player - Love is the answer 12", Bevnik. 7" Way of Life - Trippin on your love, had the 12" so why not? Worthy addition to the collection and restored faith in the many charity shops that haven't turned much up for ages. Ya beauty!!!!!!! oh Yes !!!! H

Guest in town Mikey Posted April 22, 2005 Posted April 22, 2005 Its getting harder to find charity shops that sell 7 inch records. Oh how I miss spending an afternoon wading thru copies of T'Pau - China in your hand, or that bloke from Baywatch, picture sleeves
Guest rachel Posted April 22, 2005 Posted April 22, 2005 (edited) Its getting harder to find charity shops that sell 7 inch records. Oh how I miss spending an afternoon wading thru copies of T'Pau - China in your hand, or that bloke from Baywatch, picture sleeves link 'Do They Know It's Christmas' and Wings 'Mull of Kintyre' seem to be favourites round here. Still find the odd decent thing but even over the last few years charity shops seem to have become more aware of value, acquired copies of the Record Collector guide and price accordingly - which I'm not sure is a good thing, I know people who've been put off looking round them because of the rise in prices (clothes as well as vinyl etc) and they could ultimately lose out. Haydn Posted April 22, 2005 Author Posted April 22, 2005 It's been a while since I found anything half decent in them but to find them in near mint is wonderous. Here's the theory......... A pocketfull of people in a small town that followed the fads in the sixties and seventies when they were teenagers. Say an average of 20 years old in mid sixties will age and be at least 60 nowadays and believe it or not had cast aside their tunes in a loft. Not much years left in them and as the grim reaper touches, relatives are sometimes in a hurry to clear things out and thats how some tunes find their way into the charity shops. It is morbid I know but as one chapter closes, another one is about to begin. I know of a few old mod types tearin' up the street on their mobility scooters. I've got their number and it makes for interesting reading in the obituaries. There will still be a mountain of classical and some c*nt from Preston to go through even then. H

Guest Richard Bergman Posted April 22, 2005 Posted April 22, 2005 Which colour of cardigan did Val have on, I might have that LP.... link Brown cardigan sat in front of a log fire with his pants down one of these statements is false - can you tell which one ?
chrissie Posted April 22, 2005 Posted April 22, 2005 anyone catch thing on breakfast telly this morming on the current "fad" of buying vinyl from charity shops link Yeh Wish they hadn't mentioned it. When the charity shops realise this they will now call in experts to value before the put it up for grabs. Ruins my saturday morning rummage (around the charity shops i mean) QOF XX

Still the same price. Try sticking to the fleapit ones if you can, away from the wannabe record collectors that have hundreds of 78's supposedly worth a fortune, lol. H
Guest rachel Posted April 22, 2005 Posted April 22, 2005 When the charity shops realise this they will now call in experts to value before the put it up for grabs. link They already do... as said above some use price guides, others get people in to help with pricing... particularly 'good' items sometimes go on eBay. Obviously not against charities getting as much money as they can but charity shops used to be about people getting second-hand things cheap whilst helping others at the same time - I've actually seen clothes in charity shops more expensive than they were new in the High Street shops!! Don't have any figures on it but I worry they're doing themselves more harm than good.

Cheapsiderecords Posted April 22, 2005 Posted April 22, 2005 Here in Burlington, Ontario we have a huge warehouse called the re-use center. It is basically council run to try and stop people dumping in the municipal tip. Every Wednesday there is a queue to get in as Monday and Tuesday are the days they put out the new stock. I have found tons of Soul, Funk, Jazz and Reggae in the 5 years I have been here including 45's by Tammy Wayne, Doug Banks - 2 copies, Tommy Yates, plus 100's of Motown, Northern 45's at 25c each. They actually have a local record dealer who prices rare stuff before they put it out but that just means charging me $3 for mint copies of albums by The Monitors, Marvin, Bobby Stewart, Carla Thomas, Clarence Carter, Sam and Dave, the list goes on. Albums are normally 49c. They also have free boxes at the entrance and in the last couple of months I have got Manu Dibango, Crusaders, Ahmad Jamal, Joe Farrell - Tamla and Billy Eckstine - Tamla albums in really good shape for nothing!!!!!!.
