i know what you are saying jimmy, however, the origin of the post was about the 'best' spinners. I was giving my honest answer to the question.

IMHO little Gary Taylor from down Crewe way would be hard to burn off or even match.

A very stylish, intricate dancer and 2 way spinner. He once spun so fast he dislodged a kidney or lung, (true story), can't remember which. He collapsed in a heap and (he won't thank me for sayin this), has a scar the length of his back as provinence.

Another is Tall Paul from Manchester who hangs with little blonde Carol (Caz) from Bolton.

It's become commonplace to cover your drinks with flyers when he hits the floor, unless your bag is gobbin' sweaty lager top!;-)

I have seen Tall Paul and he spins at some speed. on a serious note it cant be good for your brain at that speed to be honest. You hear about the 70's rock fans who have been rocking there head backwards and forwards every weekend for 30 years and some have ended up cabbaged. I blame the music to be honest whistling.gif

I am not impressed by the speed though to be honest. Its the timing and the way a spinner comes out of the spin and the other details that do it for me. My mate Paul from Sheffield will be at the Stafford Reunion on Saturday and you will see him doing his stuff for sure. He is a big lad, mid thirties, shaven head.

There are some people who can Dance & Spin, Some who do nothing other than trying to perfect the perfect spin.... Pickle would spend the whole night Spining & manage 3 or 4 Perfect ones out of 10 Spins....Pete Wickam would dance allnight & suddenly amaze people with a perfect spin.....Gethro & Keb are 2 of the King's on the floor they can both do everthing & the only 2 I know who can spin in Both Directions.....Morris Nixon who runs Portabello Market in London & used to own the Motown Bar in Portabello Road, one week Sue & I where in there Good music being played as usual & Morris done the most perfect spin.....15 min later  He done the same thing wobelled of course & knocked over a few of his Buisness Buddies......

Talking about top spinners and not a mention of Edinburgh's Wee Jimmy Kay, at his best he was the best I'd ever seen, often deadly and flew in to many tables, he flew into a pillar at the White Heather Hotel, Carlisle banged his head and carried on dancing for another few hours and later on suffered concussion!!

Another amusing story whilst on the subject, a friend of mine and his Wife took a girl to her first allnighter, in Livingston, it had been her first night out for a long, long time due to illness, she plonked herself down and looked pleased to be there, then Wee Jimmy got up and danced in front of her for the best part of the night, after the gig was over the girl was a nervous wreck and was never seen out again!!

So let's hear it for the Tasmanian Devil

Did anyone go to the Fleet in the early 80's?

There were a couple of awesome spinners there. I used to lose count of how many spins, then they'd rewind and do half a dozen in reverse!

I was such a shy newbie back then I didn't have the nerve to introduce myself to them whistling.gif

Hi Brian, is this the same Gary Taylor who used to live in Burnley, if so used to travel all over with him and a crowd from Burnley, if he's the same person do you know where he is now as would be great to contact him

Katie from Huntingdon - is sooo cool!

Once did a spin at Peterborough in a dress with a full circle skirt - skirt got caught on someone and it came off at the waist. What did she do?

... continued the spin down to the ground and got someone to fetch a coat!

Hate talc on the floor - get a proper pair of dance shoes for god's sake!

Hate 'tourists' with beer and their partner dancing in the middle of the dance floor who don't seem to notice that what they're doing is unusual or understand the etiquette.

Love the scene though and wouldn't have missed the last 30 years for anything

I'm sure you could get contact no's from Mace who does a lot with him (promoting I mean ph34r.gif ). Hope this helps. And by the way, yeah he is a neat little dancer. :sleep3:

Re spinning: its a weird phenomenon, ie if one bloke can do it at 100 mph without going haywire, then everybody is technically capable. So my conclusion is its all about confidence - if you had no fear about going tits up you'd let rip - no? I heard a theory that it works a little like the gyroscopic forces when riding a bike, ie - the faster you pedal the less likely you are to overbalance. Easier said than done - best I've ever managed is a 4-timer "on the pole". So I reckon I'll keep practicing in mi slippers like one of the world's most sad bastards.

Cheers

Overall, beside Booper, I always thought Andy Gothard from Bulwell in Notts, was a classy dancer, whether it be spins or acrobatics, his timing of moves to co-incide with the cresendos etc was alway spot-on. I always felt that Gethro and Mona were always dancing to a formula rather than the music.( I know this last comment will cause some emails to be generated).

I saw Booper dance on the tiny stage at the Beachcomber (under the Casino), way back in 69. We hadn't even seen the light before then!

Both he and another guy from Wigan, Tony Burns, introduced those of us there that night, to 'Northern' dancing.

By eck, I can still remember't next day, cloddin' me clogs up th'entry an' then buyin' a pair of Como's.

As in WOBBLE 1:- to sway from side to side, stand or go unsteadily, stagger ; 2 :- wobbling motion ; rocking movement 3:- wobbly silly billy on the dance floor. as it say's in the Northern Soul Dictionary, admittedley Wobelled is not the correct spelling it should be WOBBLED, does this help you

this reminds me so much a girl ive been trying to trace for years,,denise abram from skelmersdale who used to have the long circle skirt and used to be seen everywhere...well into 84/85

im not trying to rekindle lost youth or owt but id heard that shed passed away but im trying to confirm this..

sorry to deviate but she was a good spinner..

Went to Va Vas for my first alnighter and while on the dance floor I felt what I thought was warm water hitting me. On looking round I saw this old bloke with a pornstar 'tache, spinning incredibly fast causing his sweat to fly off horizontally. Mmm nice. Found out later it was the legendary Booper. Great dancer but at the time, rumour had it that he may have been as old as 30 !!!!

Whenever I try to spin nowadays it is usually in the dining room after consuming lots of alcohol and I usually end up in a snotty heap across the table.

Paul

Frank Booper still goes to THe Wheel...didn't realise Gethro was still about!!!

I don't know of Suzi's steps either. But I do know Keb and I do know he is a great mover as you say. I think he was Mr UK disco dance champion c.1978 or sim. Did you hear this?

Posted the story in another thread some time ago. Too long winded - will tell u all Sat Ian/Jon but the bottom line is there were 3 of us put thru to The Grand heat semi finals of GB World disco dancing champs after coming 1st 2nd and 3rd at St Ives circa early 80's. Me and Keb got knocked out 1st round but the guy from the Army who used to run up walls lasted an extra round before being overwhelmed by the John Travolta wannabees.

Regarding spinning - god I love trying but the lack of grey plastic soled, purple canvas upper shoes and the addition of an extra 4 stone to heave round in a circle just makes my glory days at The Fleet just a distant but fond memory.
