Guest ShaneH Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 what a lot of the so called good spinners fail to do is to spin at the right time. as we know a lot of northern is formulated with a very basic structure with many variations. To me there is only 2 or 3 opportunities in a song where you 'should' spin. Its the same with clapping. I have no extra admiration for those who will just spin for the sake of it. I see many dancers who will be constantly spinning at any stage in the song and it looks out of place. Paul from Sheffield who can be seen at the Wilton is the best dancer on the scene imo. He knows exactly when to spin and when to stop. he will finish a spin effortlessly and make it look so easy. He can also dance to mid-tempo 'double-time' which I very rarely see. The best dancer on the scene by far. You can forget the tricks guys who mess around the floor, for me Paul is the greatest. Carol from Manchester is also excellent and she knows exactly when to spin too. My advice to spinners is pick the right time and it looks so much more effective. Shane (non-spinner btw! - just critical! )

Simsy Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 This a good thread, well done Jon. Is spinning a northern thing? I say this as we don't spin in the south anymore. This is somewhat of a generalisation, but I have noticed a decline in spinning and clapping over the past twenty years. Neither spinning nor clapping, or acrobatics make a good dancer. Its timing, beat and personal expression imo
Dennisoul Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 Stevie Smith from Edinburgh, million miles per hour.Thought he was gonna take off sometimes.

Paul R Posted April 22, 2005 Posted April 22, 2005 Went to Va Vas for my first alnighter and while on the dance floor I felt what I thought was warm water hitting me. On looking round I saw this old bloke with a pornstar 'tache, spinning incredibly fast causing his sweat to fly off horizontally. Mmm nice. Found out later it was the legendary Booper. Great dancer but at the time, rumour had it that he may have been as old as 30 !!!! Whenever I try to spin nowadays it is usually in the dining room after consuming lots of alcohol and I usually end up in a snotty heap across the table. Paul
Headsy Posted April 22, 2005 Posted April 22, 2005 25 years ago me............. LOL,now its better just to get in the ''zone''. as a mate of mine said at Prestatyn, on one record, for 2 minutes and 20 seconds he was the black keyboards in the Harthon studio

Guest rachel Posted April 22, 2005 Posted April 22, 2005 SUZI CAMERON FROM EDINBURGH, TOP DANCER! link Absolutely Spinning seems to be mainly a male thing (show offs? ) but the girls who do it tend to do it well. Agree with Shane a lot of people just seem to spin/ backdrop/ whatever randomly, great to see someone with a feel for the music who fits them in at the 'right' times... dancing rather than just being athletic. I always get stuck after once round, I think it's a fear of falling over
Simsy Posted April 22, 2005 Posted April 22, 2005 Who was it that said "spinning is easy, it's the stopping thats hard". One of those TV docs screened last year?
Guest Posted April 22, 2005 Posted April 22, 2005 Did anybody watch a program called "is elvis in the building",at the intermision they would show Vernon starting to do a spin, and you would have to gues whether,he did a good one,or go falling all over the place, when the program started.
Guest Posted April 22, 2005 Posted April 22, 2005 Stuart Spence and Willie Mercer both from Fife could spin wi the best of them. link You're right there Andy. I remember one night at Morecambe Pier Willie came out of a spin did a kick and almost knocked a girl spark out he was mortified!! Derek
Mandy Posted April 22, 2005 Posted April 22, 2005 At the risk of repeating myself Tall Paul Next Question link No not Tall Paul - although he is OK. Not a patch on "not so tall Paul" though!
Willow Posted April 22, 2005 Posted April 22, 2005 Bucky, I agree with you 'Squeak' was the best spinner I have seen. there are a couple around now, not quite a s good but preety good and certainly better than me!!!!!!
TheBigO Posted April 22, 2005 Posted April 22, 2005 Willie, Stuart, Nina, Jenny and I all used to dance together at the Pier in Morecombe and yes, Willie had grace and style and we all were lovers of the knock-out high kick! (I also sent some guy sparko in the Starlight room whilst hitting the beat dead on!) Sadly a lot of the old ways have gone or are dead, lots of clapping, spins, kicks etc etc. The age factor I'm afraid :-(

Dave Posted April 22, 2005 Posted April 22, 2005 Have to agree about big Paul from Sheffield Another Paul, Sadot, is pretty nimble and can spin with the best of em (just wish he'd go a bit easier on the talc ) And I suppose someone should mention "Spike" Cato? But what about the girls???? Sam from Coventry beats the men in plenty of competitions....but the two who are a real joy to watch are Kate and Janet from Hull. They just get lost in the music, every lightening fast movement has expression in it, from head to toe. Every swish of the hair and elegant gesture of the hand is perfectly timed and has meaning. If there is such a thing as Poetry in motion, they embody it

Guest in town Mikey Posted April 22, 2005 Posted April 22, 2005 Whe I first got into Soul, Conway Jones from Milford Haven/Dursley was as good a spinner as I can remember. Conway got into the Scooter scene after Wigan closed, but I see him quite regularly at Bristol City games. Another one from our neck of the woods was Dennis Lee. But then on the dancefloor, he could do just about any move he wanted.
Guest Posted April 22, 2005 Posted April 22, 2005 Always remember a young kid at Queens HallBradford 88? who could spin like that ice skating fella Scott Hamilton......mind you he couldn't dance to save himself.
Rich Buckley Posted April 22, 2005 Posted April 22, 2005 There's only one king of spin - Alistair Campbell
jonbuck Posted April 22, 2005 Author Posted April 22, 2005 (edited) I remember being @ the 100 Club in about 1988 Me & Pete Wickam & Ion we where all Tripping Big Time, There was 2 spinners there 1 a bloke I think it was Simon done a spin & wacked me in the face, Said sorry & I was so numb from Tripping didn' feel it....There was a girl & as she spun I think she had Nuts & Bolts in the botom of her skirt & she caught Pete & I with her bits....Simon done another spin @ the back of the 100 Club & got caught up with the curtain quite funny I am sure it took him a few min just to get out of them.... Guest Posted April 24, 2005 Posted April 24, 2005 When you first mentioned Gethro the name squeak came to mind. That's because in the early casino day's it was squeak and another Bilston guy, whose name iI can't recall right now, that the Wolve's/Bilston guys rated the top spinners. I've got a pic from the first anniversary of the casino with both of them on it, only the top of squeak (Andy Peak?) head showing. Will find it out and post it. It was also in the N Soul mag a couple of issues ago. Gaye
