Premium Stuff Posted November 18, 2008 Posted November 18, 2008 (edited) Deffo Detroit on the label in front of me Al H I have this on issue (silver print on blue) but here's a scan of the demo - easier to read Cheers Richard Edited November 18, 2008 by Premium Stuff
Premium Stuff Posted November 18, 2008 Posted November 18, 2008 (edited) Heavy Hank was removed from the list as it was '74. Scan showing 1969 date for Edd Henry. OK to include please? Cheers Richard Edited November 18, 2008 by Premium Stuff
Premium Stuff Posted November 18, 2008 Posted November 18, 2008 La Crystal (Billy Ferrell) dunno needs verifying It is detroit, just played it this very morning ... Marc Here's a scan with the Detroit address Cheers Richard
Premium Stuff Posted November 18, 2008 Posted November 18, 2008 Yep, Simon Barbee & The Barbabes "Showdown" on Bar Bee, obscure funky r&b thing. I might have a few more labels to add, will look around asap. Here's the disc Cheers Richard
Jumpinjoan Posted November 18, 2008 Posted November 18, 2008 Holy Moley! Jeez... Detroit was some busy place!
Weingarden Posted November 18, 2008 Posted November 18, 2008 without doing a thorough search, i notice a couple missing from both lists that were definitely mentioned at some point above: VESTPOCKET BLACK SOUL both belong on 70s list. and we currently have ADELL on both lists.
Premium Stuff Posted November 18, 2008 Posted November 18, 2008 Chalky These are the ones I've yet to check and verify Richard, I've got to go out this morning so won't get too much time. Ranger is Clio, Michigan and from 1957 according too R&B Indies, could be little too early for what we doing??? Hi Chalky Not sure of the date on this one. EJ & Echoes are obviously better known on Diamond Jim. Here's a scan (not my 45). Anyone date this please? Cheers Richard
Premium Stuff Posted November 18, 2008 Posted November 18, 2008 (edited) Storm dunno Here's a scan - can't tell you much more ... ... except it's a Vicki Music job and has the same address as the pink Detroit Twirl 45s I posted up earlier. Cheers Richard Edited November 18, 2008 by Premium Stuff
Premium Stuff Posted November 18, 2008 Posted November 18, 2008 (edited) Theese are the ones I've yet to check and verify Richard ... Detroit? I posted up a separate thread on this one a couple of weeks ago here https://www.soul-source.co.uk/Dee-and...s-T-t85036.html It's a reworking of Dee & Joe's Who Is It Gonna Be. Presumably the same 'Dee' and it uses the same backing track too = Detroit (and 1960s?) However, it is backed with a version of Al Green's Let's Stay Together - so actually a 70s release? Chalky - your call as to whether it's in or out. Cheers Richard Edited November 19, 2008 by Premium Stuff
Premium Stuff Posted November 18, 2008 Posted November 18, 2008 LMA and El Toro definitely both Detroit...circa 1970, don't know specific years. A scan of Herbie Williams on El Toro Richard
Premium Stuff Posted November 18, 2008 Posted November 18, 2008 I have the Cody Black on Universe, it ain`t Detroit (Ohio if I remember right). Marc Hi Marc - hope all is well with you I don't actually know this one. Just went by the artist saying it was Detroit. Any good? I do have a scan though Cheers Richard
Guest breakself Posted November 19, 2008 Posted November 19, 2008 Apologies if any of these have been listed already! Tantus (Percy and Them) Saquarius (Purple Snow) Tronic (L. Levallis) Ear Wax (Hunt's Determination Band)* C&J (Means of Persuasion) TCA (Betty Lavette) Charisma Sound (Burning Desire) Channel One (Burning Cities) Love Dog (N. Mayer) Morning Glory (Perfect Touch) Better World (Shades of Time)* Mor-tone (Aged in Harmony)* Sunstruck (Pages)* Gate-Way (Alphonso Hamilton)* Gatewood (Flint Emeralds)* *Denotes label from city surrounding Detroit (e.g. Flint, Saginaw, etc.) Wood City from the above list was out of Grand Rapids, btw.
Guest breakself Posted November 19, 2008 Posted November 19, 2008 ...oh, and Jump Off is a Carolina label (presumably the confusion is over the Vee Gees).
Weingarden Posted November 19, 2008 Posted November 19, 2008 okay, i'm going to quibble over the inclusion of DOUBLE L. that's no detroit label. it's a new york label. it had a handful of detroit-related releases in a row in 1963: wilson pickett, herman griffin, buddy lamp. and another couple pickett releases. but lloyd price never lived in detroit, did he? (i'm willing to be corrected on that.) and while he certainly had some kind of deal(s) with some detroit folks circa '63, this can't be called a detroit label.
Guest carl_p Posted November 19, 2008 Posted November 19, 2008 (edited) Not sure of the date on this one. EJ & Echoes are obviously better known on Diamond Jim. Here's a scan (not my 45). Anyone date this please? Cheers Richard my guess is EJ & Echoes is from 1966 or 1967 and it's from clio. i have most of the 45's on the label but there is little reference on them. it's mostly a country label. Ranger #404 was estimated at 1965 in one book. so this would probably be a year or two later? Willie Jones on "Storm" is from 1959 according to some references i read. I have the Syl Foreman on Adell but it says Minneapolis on the label? i don't know if there is another label called adell or not? Millage i thought was a pittsburg label even though i think it was odell bailey who after moved to detroit. Edited November 19, 2008 by carl_p
Weingarden Posted November 19, 2008 Posted November 19, 2008 oh, man, forgot about one of my most favoritest records, the soul superiors, "faith." label is Warfell. not northern, but as soulful a record as you'll ever hear. actually a gospel record. certainly belongs, though. (not that i'm the one setting the criteria; if i were, we'd have just one big list, with gospel, blues, 60s, 70s, everything.)

Northernguy Posted November 19, 2008 Posted November 19, 2008 From memory (which is pretty dire) I have tucked away somewhere Mary Wells beat me to the punch on "Magnet". Seem to remember being told this was a Detroit label but dont know for sure. Anybody know this label?

Seem to remember being told this was a Detroit label but dont know for sure. Anybody know this label? Couple or three Magnet in the R&B Indies but none from Detroit. No Mary Wells either so could be different label to those listed or a missing number in the listings of those listed

Jaco Posted November 19, 2008 Posted November 19, 2008 There's also a Midnight label from Detroit. Two tracks from Joey Leal.
Marc Forrest Posted November 19, 2008 Posted November 19, 2008 Hi Marc - hope all is well with you I don't actually know this one. Just went by the artist saying it was Detroit. Any good? I do have a scan though Cheers Richard Hi Richard, great to see you about again, hope your well mate. Yes, its a nice early doublesider...but to be honest nth too special. I checked at home again and its indeed from Ohio. Marc

Chalky Posted November 19, 2008 Posted November 19, 2008 Is this the Universe label, does it need removing? ignore me Marc, already removed it.
Guest breakself Posted November 19, 2008 Posted November 19, 2008 Are they all 70's? Can't find a listing for C&J or Love Dog. Channel One according to R&B Indies is Mobile, Al and New Orleans distributed. C&J is, I believe, an Ann Arbor label. The group Means of Persuasion also had an LP. John Sinclair managed the group! Love Dog was a late Nathaniel Mayer effort, and one of his toughest to find. The label looks almost identical to the Top Dog label. This is a different Channel One than the Alabama label (pressed at Archer).
Modernsoulsucks Posted November 19, 2008 Posted November 19, 2008 Was that Changing Scene 45 a Detroit thing. Jo-Vee-Jo or similar. Villige is spelt wrong on the list. I know, picky but if a job's worth doing it's worth doing proper as my dad used to say just before he palmed the job, he didn't want to do, off on me. ROD

Northernguy Posted November 19, 2008 Posted November 19, 2008 Seem to remember someone telling me this was a first issue out of Detroit
George G Posted November 19, 2008 Posted November 19, 2008 (edited) There's also a Midnight label from Detroit. Two tracks from Joey Leal. Joey's from Toledo, OH. They may have been recorded in Detroit (as were many Toledo artists at the time). Two 45s by him, they are early white rockers/teeners. RE: GTM label, the only record I know about is Johnny Gibson Trio (who were also from Toledo, of course) - were there two GTMs? What other records are on the label(s)? I have a 1966 rock 45 on the Cass label, from a Detroit suburb. Wondering if there were other 45s on it. Think it's connected to another label. Have to dig the thing out. - George Edited November 19, 2008 by George G
