Dave Thorley Posted November 15, 2008 Posted November 15, 2008 there were two presses of the hog, one was the dc version and the other was the same record with wheelsville distribution. it was a DC label and group but the label owners had detroit contacts. That would explane why several copies have turned up in Detroit
Steve Edgar Posted November 15, 2008 Posted November 15, 2008 a few more from mr gordy but he might have left detroit by the time these came out,??? melody land, natural resources, prodigal, chisa, hitsville, gaiee, black forum, and one not from mr gordy,sew-city,was detroit wasnt it,????, think Melody Land & Hitsville were Motowns C&W labels. Bit like the way Melody label was after the first 3 or 4 good releases. Made the mistake years ago of picking some stuff up on these labels

Made the mistake years ago of picking some stuff up on these labels yes s/integ,some pretty cr*p stuff on these labels imo,
Chalky Posted November 15, 2008 Posted November 15, 2008 a few more from mr gordy but he might have left detroit by the time these came out,??? melody land, natural resources, prodigal, chisa, hitsville, gaiee, black forum, and one not from mr gordy,sew-city,was detroit wasnt it,????, Sew City New York as far as I'm aware. Prodigal is it a soul label? besides it's mid 70's and motown no longer Detroit then, same for Gaiee. Was Chisa Detroit? Assumed it was more like West Coast?
Weingarden Posted November 15, 2008 Posted November 15, 2008 more: H (70s) Jay-Walking? (didn't think it's detroit, but the eddie parker is detroit through and through) Satan Mo-City (70s) Perfecta Grandville Coemands (70s) Homogenized (70s) Del-La-Northern (presumably the same as Northern Del-La, but this is how it appears on the label of the Little Roger Hatcher) Corn (70s-80s?) Twirl? (is this detroit?) G Carol (70s) American Dream (70s) Shur-Hit Lifeline (70s) Spartan
Steve Edgar Posted November 15, 2008 Posted November 15, 2008 Sew City New York as far as I'm aware. Prodigal is it a soul label? besides it's mid 70's and motown no longer Detroit then, same for Gaiee. Was Chisa Detroit? Assumed it was more like West Coast? Chisa was Hugh Masekela's label, originally distributed by Buddah, but Motown did distribute it a some point. Arthur Adams 45's were I'm sure steve
Guest Posted November 15, 2008 Posted November 15, 2008 yes but was it strictly a soul label? was set up for white rock bands according to quick web search? Prodigal someone mentioned was purchased by Motown in '74 so doubt it's Detroit. I'll update later when on PC upstairs. Got "theres a ghost in my house" on rare earth, rare earth the band have done a few soul type things and stoney and meatloaf did covers of motown hits and came out on motown aswell.
Steve Edgar Posted November 15, 2008 Posted November 15, 2008 more: Jay-Walking? (didn't think it's detroit, but the eddie parker is detroit through and through) Jay Walking is part of SoulVille. Harrisburg. steve
Weingarden Posted November 15, 2008 Posted November 15, 2008 Jay Walking is part of SoulVille. Harrisburg. steve right. but maybe this is a different Jay-Walking? pretty strange credits for a harrisburg record (though it does fit right into the harrisburg jay-walking numbering system): Jay-Walking 018 Eddie Parker Can't You See (What You're Doing to Me) (Jack Ashford) Do the Choo Choo (E. Willis, J. Ashford, L. Chandler) Produced by Jack Ashford and Lorraine Chandler Arranged by Paul Riser
De-to Posted November 15, 2008 Posted November 15, 2008 2 more here that I cant see on the list the first from the 60's the second I have noticed for sale on Ebay which dates from the early 70's. Jer Jim Han 60's Black-Lady 70'sis this the one,
boba Posted November 15, 2008 Posted November 15, 2008 right. but maybe this is a different Jay-Walking? pretty strange credits for a harrisburg record (though it does fit right into the harrisburg jay-walking numbering system): Jay-Walking 018 Eddie Parker Can't You See (What You're Doing to Me) (Jack Ashford) Do the Choo Choo (E. Willis, J. Ashford, L. Chandler) Produced by Jack Ashford and Lorraine Chandler Arranged by Paul Riser I think it was the pa label but jack ashford and lorraine chandler were songwriters that shopped their material around. they also wrote the ray gant and arabian knights 45.
boba Posted November 15, 2008 Posted November 15, 2008 is this the one, this record came out on both "lady" and "black lady"
Craig W Posted November 15, 2008 Posted November 15, 2008 is this the one, Yes thats the one. Well spotted. I assume its the same L J Reynolds who did the chocalate penguin breakdown or whatever it was called.
De-to Posted November 15, 2008 Posted November 15, 2008 memory slightly gone but wasnt ashford+simpsons early label called gamma of garland greens, girl i love you/it rained 40 days fame a detroit thingy but then picked up by mcas label revue,???? sorry if its already had a mention on here or its not correct,

The Yank Posted November 15, 2008 Posted November 15, 2008 Gamma was Jo Armstead's label and was based in Chicago.

pikeys dog Posted November 15, 2008 Posted November 15, 2008 Says 68 on the record and m/town didnt move till 72 so a good'n. I still reckon its a 'Mowest' production. Motown was slowly decamping to LA from just after the Detroit riots, so 68 onwards... Chris Clark was sent out west to get involved in Film and TV tie ins. There were no 45s issued on the label - just the CC lp - I'm guessing that it was recorded and released to complete her recording contract with the company so she could take up the reins in her new job.
De-to Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 bronse, criss-cross, joy, card, soul-beat, glodis, lifeline, new-records, katron, whizenglo, vir-ro, sure a.henry and j.montgomery were detroit thingys???,
Prophonics 2029 Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 As it's Mel's thread was he wanting Detroit labels with soul/Northern releases only. I don't think Hideout has any,nor Fenton and A squared. Otherwise you're gonna be missing a lot of labels unless someone into 60's garage contributes. RPR is West Coast address although did distribute "Like my baby",Dynamo subsid of Musicor with only Wylie Hester connection from Stanley Mitchell/Platters. Anyway sure you know that. Don't think Garrison is Detroit either. Subsid of Wand and checking matrix of Honeybees against Clarence Reid they are very similar Honeybees 50642 [sratched] and a M or W or squiggle [hard to make out] Clarence Reid 50589 and as above. ROD I have one on Fenton and its not bad but its a well known garage track, danceable.
De-to Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 the teen beat song, marvin gaye, detroit free press, the only time im happy, the supremes, george alexander,??? the above same as,the miracles,i care about detroit, standard groove,
Guest carl_p Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 That was me, Jimmy also recorded for Blue Rock, thought Syco had something to do with Salem? Boba might know On the Syco 45 armen boladian did the publishing but it was recorded in chicago according to a sixties detroit webisode.
Weingarden Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 carl, haven't seen you in years, man! you let anyone come look at your stuff these days, or is it strictly ebay? i'm gonna be in town in a couple weeks (for the nathaniel mayer fundraiser on 11/30 and the ann arbor soul club anniversary 12/5). cheers, matt

Maybe we should run a Chicago Label listing alongside this Detroit one,how you fixed Chalky! atb,Geoff.
Chalky Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 Maybe we should run a Chicago Label listing alongside this Detroit one,how you fixed Chalky! atb,Geoff. Why not, Detroit down to a trickle now and I've time on my hands at the present. Do you want to start a separate topic?

Lee Rogers own label "Soul Wheel" looked kinda like the Big Wheel logo, only one release i think from the man himself steve
