Steve Edgar Posted November 14, 2008 Posted November 14, 2008 Taurus & Leo[Velvet Sound] don't sound 70's to me ROD agree bout Taurus and Leo, I'm sure I've seen this listed as being from '67. As a matter of interest was there any other releases on Velvet Sound? Taurus and Leo has a label number of 45-367. or was that just a number given by Atco, the label's distributor? steve
Chalky Posted November 14, 2008 Posted November 14, 2008 Isn't Gary Dean on YOUNG a Detroit 45? Keep Big Wheel and dump the garage labels as I know Mel was only interested in the soul/northern aspect. Be a bit of a mish-mash otherwise. Taurus & Leo[Velvet Sound] don't sound 70's to me ROD I agree stick to the soul labels only, just let me know what to dump
Chalky Posted November 14, 2008 Posted November 14, 2008 The Gospel and kiddies label (Archer) I've removed unless someone can give a better reason for their inclusion I've removed the A-Squared, Fenton and Hideout Rod queried too. Any more thoughts on Boo (& Aquarius)?

Tricky Posted November 14, 2008 Posted November 14, 2008 Right somebody has to make a decision on outside of detroit labels.Soulwise i would keep them in.I mean Mutt is there as is Tri City. On this basis. Better World Flip Hotline Music Journal Moonville Usa Ultra City Valerie Wood City

(gino washington) Standout (white girl group part of hideout if i'm not mistaken) Hot-Line

Steve Edgar Posted November 14, 2008 Posted November 14, 2008 Yes Billy Soul cheers for that Tony, just had a listen, sounds very early steve

Steve Edgar Posted November 14, 2008 Posted November 14, 2008 re Aquarius: are there two (or three?) detroit labels with that name? or is the yellow candace love aquarius the same as the multicolored soul-inpressions, domestic five, and ultimate ovation aquarius and the red calvin golden aquarius? Besides Ric Williams Aquarius label which seemed to be set up for Candace Love, I have seen another yellow Aquarius label (Loyce Cotton?) that Im sure was a southern label, guess name was used a few times on labels steve
Premium Stuff Posted November 14, 2008 Posted November 14, 2008 Is too Teen Town, worst "Ronnie & Robbin" record ever also came out on Hanna-Barbara. It's Team Town rather than Teen Town: Ronnie & Robyn - Cradle of Love/Dreamin' (Team Town 9001/9002). Links in with Sidra and WIG numbering system. Cheers Richard
Md Records Posted November 14, 2008 Posted November 14, 2008 I appreciate that they're billed as the "Bee Gee Stans Of Detroit" but this track on "Tal Vert" was included on the "Ol' Virginia Soul volume 3" compilation, haven't got the C.D. or sleeve notes to hand, maybe needs confirmation one way or the other. Des Parker What's on the Detroit Astra label, from the listing, or am I being a bit thick/forgetful.

Des Parker What's on the Detroit Astra label, from the listing, or am I being a bit thick/forgetful. I think there may be more than one Astra. I got Aqua-Nites for a mate who collects Detroit early stuff and I think another title by a female. Yellow label. No Northern things I would imagine as a bit early for us. ROD
Guest carl_p Posted November 14, 2008 Posted November 14, 2008 (edited) Aqua-Nites had two records on astra i believe it was a white group. Mr Big is another doo wop label i think it's detroit (little tom & valentines) & Comma Edited November 14, 2008 by carl_p
Guest carl_p Posted November 14, 2008 Posted November 14, 2008 (edited) "astra" was a Bill Carnes' label along with "hyland" and it's a bomb and probably a few others. he leased out one of the aqua nites 45's and it came out on a astra label out of swissville pa. so there were two astra labels one in pa and one from detroit. and clara hardy had a 45 on astra. Modernsoulsucks Posted November 14, 2008 Posted November 14, 2008 Interesting stuff Carl, what's the Clara Hardy like? Des Parker From a Northern perspective bobbins. That was the female 45 I mentioned. ROD
Guest carl_p Posted November 14, 2008 Posted November 14, 2008 Interesting stuff Carl, what's the Clara Hardy like? Des Parker nice steady beat slightly uptempo with male group backing. b-side is a little faster almost surf/r&r.

Godzilla Posted November 15, 2008 Posted November 15, 2008 What are the rules again? No garage but Soul/Northern is ok? If funk 45s are eligible, how about New Detroit? As in Johnnie Walker - Love at First Taste. I assume it's a sub of GM, as it's a GM production and label number is GM 163.
Guest toby Posted November 15, 2008 Posted November 15, 2008 What? I think he is refering to some artists that were from Detoit that recorded on some Atlantic releases,The list he put up was a part of a project i had going way back in late 70s/early 80s compiling Detroit labels artists as part of my wants list,i remember giving him an unfinished draft of the book thing i was doing at the time. If i get time to dig the remaining copies out ill send you one Pete,i think i listed over 26,000 records on over 800 labels,it ran from 1958 up to around 1983 ish, loads of photo copy labels etc matrix #s and a whole host of useless info on /in it .
The Yank Posted November 15, 2008 Posted November 15, 2008 If you're deleting Gospel labels, I think Divinity should go. I've never seen anything other than Gospel on this label.
Craig W Posted November 15, 2008 Posted November 15, 2008 2 more here that I cant see on the list the first from the 60's the second I have noticed for sale on Ebay which dates from the early 70's. Jer Jim Han 60's Black-Lady 70's

We're by and large sticking to the soul/northern. 70's don't mind as i'll say so after if thats what it is. Funk probably no use to many on here but post 'em anyway, I might do a separate list of the gospel/funk etc.

Guest carl_p Posted November 15, 2008 Posted November 15, 2008 the first one devastating affair says 1972. some of the others say 1971, so i'm not sure but i think it would have started in detroit.

Chalky Posted November 15, 2008 Posted November 15, 2008 wasnt hog records a part of the wheelsville set up,??? lee rogers on soul-wheel label... The Moments Hog? D.C. label isn't it?
Chalky Posted November 15, 2008 Posted November 15, 2008 Rare Earth ? yes but was it strictly a soul label? was set up for white rock bands according to quick web search? Prodigal someone mentioned was purchased by Motown in '74 so doubt it's Detroit. I'll update later when on PC upstairs.
Steve Edgar Posted November 15, 2008 Posted November 15, 2008 The Moments Hog? D.C. label isn't it? am sure there was a Detroit Hog... sure I read it on an article on tera sherma , was it a Mike Hanks label??? steve

Guest carl_p Posted November 15, 2008 Posted November 15, 2008 you're probably right on the mowest. i think i heard hog was a mike hanks thing too but the moments were probably from dc area? a few more for consideration. M&M (freddie butler) Dynamite blues (brothers two prod by lee rogers) Kool (Gary brown) DMD Vestpocket Tayster NR (little reuben) Dynamic (delsina by dynamics) Green Eagle (element experience 70's) Midwest int. (empulse 70's) Ju-par (esquires 70's) Love (final decisions) Brown bomber (finesse 70's) Star Route (flint executives 70's?) Vertigo?? (paul frank an arp press but not sure if it's detroit?) Black Soul (wilson harris experience)
boba Posted November 15, 2008 Posted November 15, 2008 there were two presses of the hog, one was the dc version and the other was the same record with wheelsville distribution. it was a DC label and group but the label owners had detroit contacts.
