now as someone who is known to like r'n'b ( well love it really) my opinion on the anabelle caeser is i don't like it ...not even a little bit ... it's plain and ordinary in my opinion

Do have a confession though - first time I heard it (through a sound burger) I was not over impressed to say the least.....next time was in a club and it blew me socks off.....hence the 12 months from now remark.

Err ok, I suppose I meant crossed over in a major way a la Big Daddy Rogers etc... seems to me the R&B tunes that have gone big in Northern rooms are the ones with something a bit different from the normal R&B, not quite sure what but they seem to be more 'accessible' to the majority of the Northern crowd... whereas often DJs trying to introduce the earlier, heavier sounds provoke grumbling 

As for "no place".. that's up to the dancefloor/majority to decide...

I think the reason only "bit different" tracks have crossed over is that these are the ones singled out by the Northern DJs for novelty value

On the rare occassions I have heard a true R&B collector in a main room BDR, James Duncan, Lou Lowton etc are not top of the playlist.

Truth is that when these big R&B tunes become accepted by the Northern crowd, they become instantly adopted and defended by the same token.

Big Daddy Rogers, Cookie Jackson, 5 Royales etc seem to suffer the fate of being dropped by the R&B scene cus they have been accepted by the Northern Scene .....shame really, cus they are great tunes.

(James Duncan and Lou Lawton are terrible records IMHO.)

Think to be perfectly honest some of those mentioned above also different in style to records like Little Annie. R&B yes (it's all R&B at the end of the day, just us who pigeon hole it) but they aren't as low down and dirty

Still starting to fill floors at Northern dos though.....all the same......

We all have personal tastes Grant, (thank f*ck or it would be a boring scene), and this record will never appeal to the majority of soulies.......it does however, have a certain appeal to so many of them or this discussion would not arise in the first place.

have to say dave, having posted in the events section saying leicester was a great night and recommending it, i agree with you - the music on saturday was not great.

i thought hammie was excellent early on and i think it was andy riley who played some nice tunes in the small room (commands on dynamic is one well-known but not worn-out track which springs to mind) but others were not really on form

eddie bishop's 'call me' was probably the biggest record of the night in terms of dance floor reaction which was a bit odd

left halfway through kenny burrell so didn't hear mick h

not the usual excellent level though still way ahead of many other nights

great venue and marston's pedigree which is probably the finest pint on earth

anyway, back to the top 10s

Hi Dan,

I didn't get there till about 9.30 so missed Andy (very under-rated) and Hammie's early sets.

I heard some good music in the main room till 10.00 when the rank oldies started.

Went into the small room and caught half an hour of Mick and Kenny Burrell double decking with some unusual records.....so far, so good!

After that in the second room it was Hammie with oldies, as billed, and Lee Vowles playing "modern", which turned out to be 70s oldies, several of which he interrupted with the microphone.

I wandered into the main room a few times to hear motown and more tired oldies, some repeated.

I did stick it out until Mick came on at 12.00 and his set was of the usual high standard, so at least it finished on a high!

For the second time running this event has been let down IMHO by a big name guest playing safe! :angry:

I hope none of my entrance money was used to pay Ken Burrell

A good atmosphere, and better night than some but I heard a better sustained quality of music at Wellingborough on Friday.

As you say, back to Little Annie

Funnily enough i was talking to Lee yesterday and he commented on how difficult it was to play anything that wasn't a guaranteed floor filler on the night as the dancers left the floor in droves if they weren't 100% familiar with it, so i don't know that it is entirely fair to give the DJ's stick.

Funnily enough I wasn't intending to "give him stick"....just recounting what I heard.

Mick kept the floor full for the last hour with quite a lot of records that would be mainly familiar to regular nighter-goers and the TBI crowd.

I spoke to quite a few friends WHO WERE THERE and their thoughts were similar to mine.

i think that's a fair comment john

it was a bit like the parting of the red sea at times

it is hard for djs esp on a night where the crowd was a bit unusual maybe

having said that, i was more saying that from my own P-O-V (ie not specifically about the dancefloor) that it wasn't that hot

some of the lesser-known stuff that was played wasn't that great IMO (can't remember specific tracks, just a feeling)

re lee and ally, i'm not sure that double decking works that well - why not do a full spot and let your own stuff flow?

also think that the two room policy might be worth looking at because you get similar sounds ie a bit of everything in both which maybe defeats the object a bit. maybe would be better to have the small room as out and out newies/lesser-knowns or r&b or modern

having said all that, i still think the orange is an excellent night with friendly punters and promoters, lots of good beer and usually great music/atmosphere

Wasn't saying that he was applauding those records, just that his remarks (as muffled as they were from inside that closet ) were aimed at Anna Belle Caesar.............although he actually voiced support for a Cookie Jackson track, but doubt myself that any of his tail feathers were being shook, or even twitched, at the time (mind you, it is pretty dark in afformentioned closet, so he could have been doing the Watusi for all we know )

Now please return to the back, where your heckling can only be defined as mumbling rant...
