Soulbarner
Sadly you are right Chalky. Jeez... how much effort must the above take? Personally, I have no time for such things. Or such people. I go to nighters to hear good music and to dance. End of. Oh, and to spend time and have a laugh with people who feel the same. same as us girl........... Guest Bogue
Promoters / DJ = Service provider Punter = Paying customer My oberservation as someone who works in customer service. If the service/product is not what the customer requires then they will cease to be a customer. As a customer you cannot tell me what product I should buy (listen to) or I will walk away, feel free to sugest by all means, but if the shop continues to be empty get the hint that is not what I (as a customer) want. As for traveling to attend a venue, I will travel as far as I wish, it does not make me an inferior punter because I choose not to go to all the other venues in my area, it's my choice, just as it's your choice to promote a venue. As for venues closing, last night, without any research, I know their were three events on within an eight mile radius of my home all of them have been going for a few years, I have not been to two of them and unless the one that I go to closes, I am not planning on doing so. Tonight their are two venues less than 3 miles from my house and less than 4 miles apart, one is a new event the other has been going for years, now which if any should I attend? Don't blame the punters for not attending it's not all their fault! I will end in saying it's the music that I go to listen to, not the colour of the label or whatever the label is. I love the music, not the medium that carries it. Now i'll get my coat, pack my bags & leave the country never to darken a dance floor again! Phil I wouldn't get your coat Phil, very well put I thought, & I would guess if the truth be told you speak for the majority of soul fans. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink, as they say. Some might not like the way it's gone/going but it's up to folk themselves when & where they go. & if less venues with more people having to travel is the right/best way it will happen......if it isn't... it won't...end of. I really don't think, personally, that less venues would make much difference, the 'hard core' scene members are already doing the traveling to the cutting edge places & I just think that the other people who make up the rest of it, the less committed, if you like, still wouldn't travel. One other point that needs expressing, don't know if you guys have noticed but we are having some bad times economically !......... this is bound to have an effect, & if you have a good look around its not just soul venues that are closing....it's venues full stop ! My lad has just become 18 & so the bright lights are calling out to him....he went into town on Thursday, not a Friday/Sat I know, but he went into at least half a dozen bars, bars that had live music or a disco going on, & there were no more than a dozen people in any of them ! In two of them he & his mates were the only punters ! Edited November 8, 2008 by Bogue Link to comment Social source share

Reckon the smoking ban and the fact people can now buy a carton of piss from the major supermarkets has had a lot to do with it... low numbers in pubs and bars i mean. Just to put my two cents worth into the debate, i am torn between the devil and the deep blue sea. On one side of the coin there is a huge soul scene going on in the U.K. and yes i would love to be a part of it for more than 1 months visit every year, then on the flip side i live in a fantastic country with great weather, plus my wife and i run our own monthly soul night here in Fremantle. We have been very fortunate to find a 120 year old venue thats so much like the old Casino in terms of atmosphere, smells etc. plus we have put 120% effort into making it what it is today with attendances around the 225 every month ie. right music policy, vinyl only and no ego deejay's to put a spanner in the works. We had John Manship over in May and he said he had'nt seen anything this good for years so we must be doing something right. Do it for the love of the scene and the music, not money, play the right mix of music and the punters will come. Good luck to anyone thinking of starting another gig. See you in April. Tony and Sue. Guest andrew bin
i personally think it's a shame when well established nights shut, i can only comment on Luton because i haven't been to any of the others, inmy opinion Sean and Pete always did their best to ensure that they provided an excellent night bringing some of the scenes top dj's to Luton and on the few occasions i attended i had a fantastic time, the reason they have stopped holding nights at the rugby club is to do with the the venue management and has some people will know some venue owners/managers can be a right shower to deal with on times, I'm sure soon has they find a new suitable venue they'll be back promoting their excellent soul nights Link to comment Social source share
