RIP Steve.... I started a topic on Aug 12 this year about owners name in run out with this :- Over the year we all must have seen old owners name scratched into the run out of some records but I have four with Steve Kennedys name in and seen lots more that I would loved to have had but just could not stretch to at the time or now for that matter, Steve must of had one hell of a collection from what I have seen over the years. I knew of Steve but don't remember meeting him ever. After talking to Rob Gray & Carl Fortnum about the records they bought of Steve and the reply's on the topic about Steve & his collection i can only come to the conclusion he was a really nice guy with a very nice collection. RIP Steve Steve J Edited November 4, 2008 by SteveJohnston
Mark R Posted November 4, 2008 Posted November 4, 2008 ======== yes mark..many memories of steve every 2 weeks to the top of the world stafford all niter in any car or van we could get hold of our trips in his A plant works van to the niters are legendary! one record i got off steve which i think was the last time i seen him ..was the marvellettes - ill keep holding on on Tamla... RIP Steve.... I think last time I saw him Mark, was in Weatherspoons one Saturday lunchtime, before a Boro game when they were still at Manor Park..........I seem to recall telling him about Soul Purpse and handing him a flyer, so that dates it in the last four years or so. He ran the Rugger Tavern for a while I'm told. One of the vivid memories I have, and I'm sure I've mentioned this on here before, but maybe not Steve's name, was sitting with him at TOTW one night, as he proudly held a copy of Stewart Ames on J&W in his hand. I said, "let's have a look", and as I took it off him, it fell from the paper sleeve to the floor!! Luckily all around the outside of the dancefloor at TOTW was carpeted..........no harm done!! The look on both our faces must of been a sight to behold!!! Cheers, Mark R

Guest nubes Posted November 4, 2008 Posted November 4, 2008 Oh My God....Steve Kennedy was one of my best friends on the Northern scene....throughout the 80s.....i am really shocked by the news...and so sad....so sad I first met Steve...along with his sis Sharon and Gaynor on the way to Wigan's 4th oldies anniversary..i can still remember sharon telling all who would listen that she was only 13!!!...from that night on...Steve and myself became close mates...i remember him being totally disgusted when i decided to stop collecting records and start buying make up instead ... and as for his record collection ...it was second to none and along with Lee Jakeman..both for soulies so young ...were very knowledgeable.... But most of all about Steve...he really was one of the nicest people anyone could encounter on the scene...and although there were times that we did fall out...he always picked up our friendship and carried on as if nothing had happened... I still have the cassettes that he did for me all them years back... RIP Steve...Rest In Peace...my darlingxxx

I will never forget the time Steve and my husband Tony ended up double decking using Steve's sales box at Sandbach all nighter. Steve kept playing both decks at the same time and speaking in that funny voice of his... so funny. I'm with you Mark... still can't believe it. One memory of Steve...that stands out for me ...was the time after a Wigan niter we encountered a soulie who told us that he was 25 ...I still remember us both gasping with shock that someone so old was still doing niters!!!!!.. because it was really unusual then to come across soulies of that age ...i think i was 19...and Steve had just turned 17.... we both stood gawping at this "ancient" soulie like he was a museum artefact...he then turned on his heels and strode off...we waited till he was reasonable distance away....the conversation was thus Steve-"Bit old ..aint he??" Me- "yeah....i mean only the DJS are that old" Steve-"Bit sad tho...i'm not going to be doing niters at that age are you?" Me-"Naa..i am stopping when i am 21" Steve-"me too" The folly of youth!!!! Apologies if this account is coming across disjointed ...but i am really finding it hard getting my head around this at the moment.....Delxxxx

Not only from a northern soul perspective but as a good friend. Glyn Reardon. Nuneaton. Hope you're well Glyn, it's been too long mate I can remember Steve mainly from the Bermuda Club in Nuneaton, when we were all young soulies and mods and looked up to the older crowd. I was always impressed by Steve's moustache, so much so i grew my own! Not bad for a 15 year old. I was thinking of Richard Hall today as well from Hartshill, most knew as Poe, another mate we lost too soon. Another great lad R.I.P all our sadly missed friends. Matt Male Nuneaton.

Guest Posted November 6, 2008 Posted November 6, 2008 Mark freeman, just kindly rang me, to tell me of the shockingly sad news of Steve passing away. Steve worked for me in 90s after we became friends through his search for rare records. He was a great lad with a real sense of humour. example: After my long abscense from Northern Soul "do's" he persuaded me, I must go with him, to a great allniter, as long as I drove. After badgering me all week I said OK we'll go. He was a bit vague as to where it was but if I got to the M6 he'd give me directions... we got to the M6 and sure enough headed north, he's kept saying "not far now", "not far now".... 6 hours later we were in Glasgow.. he somehow "forgot" to tell me this SHOTTS all nighter thing, was in a different country... Great lad, great taste in music and real fun to be with..I always thought he would eventually pop up again, collecting and DJing.. both of which he was so good at. Lots of people will have some very fine memories of this man.. John
Guest sharon kennedy Posted November 6, 2008 Posted November 6, 2008 Thank you all for your lovely comments about Steve, he would of been so pleased to know that his friends thought so highly of him. We are all so sad and devastated that Steve has left our lives so suddenly and at such a young age, he was the best son, brother and dad to his three beautiful children Spencer, Faye and Clarke. I have fantastic memories from alnighters I went to with him and how passionate he was about music and how proud he was of his record collection. Your messages have brought a smile and a tear to all of us but we all thank you for thinking of us at this very sad time. Sharon Kennedy

Mark R Posted November 10, 2008 Posted November 10, 2008 Well, after returning from the high of a Southport Weekender yesterday, I sure felt in a contrasting mood today when I woke to the prospect of saying goodbye to an old friend. Nice to see lots in attendance paying their last respects to a well liked local fella. Sincere condolences to all the family, who looked truly heartbroken.........I really feel for them Mark Randle
