Pauldonnelly Posted November 5, 2008 Posted November 5, 2008 (edited) If I'm honest I am slightly envious of those that find the energy to keep on keeping on at all-nighters, I guess I'm from another breed so to speak however if those that want to do it enjoy it, fair play to em. However what I find rather pathetic is the attempt by some to suggest that those that no longer wish to 'partake' go "do one" as they are 'second hand garbage' i.e. if you don't do niters you're not worth a flying a wank as a uk northern soul music supporter, imo its elitist to the extreme. Funny ole game en it Greavsie...its sure is Saint Edited November 5, 2008 by PaulDonnelly
Little-stevie Posted November 5, 2008 Posted November 5, 2008 Many good answers to the original question Imber.... You have a leaning towards niters as your envolvement with Middleton shows.. Many feel the same way but many also get the kicks in others ways... Just keep on pushing what you do and let others get on with it in any way they choose.. There aint no right and wrong, all niters/ soul nights/internet/ ebay etc etc, just do what you wanna do and get a buzz off the folk who feel the same way... A good point from Paul S about the all niter scene and main room djs... Maybe its a case of some playing far tooooooo often and folk don't go along sometimes because that dj is playing the same set or many of the same tunes far toooooooo often... I think the soul nights and diverse djs can sometimes be more rewarding than the main room niters boys who have to keep the floor going with so called big tunes at times... Just do what you wanna do and do it with passion... Or maybe leave it alone
Billywhizz Posted November 5, 2008 Posted November 5, 2008 Ah well there's always gonna be one, or two.....or 3.......lol I really don't know where he gets the enthusiasm after 30 years. I get bored every 5 years or so...have a year or so off barely going anywhere and then start going out a lot again. It's only recently since having the nippers that I've had this long a period where I have hardly been anywhere, except weekenders and occasional soul nights. The last (non weekender) allniter I went to was the New Century Anniversary last Christmas and the one before that was Middleton about 6months before..and it took me all week to recover I must be getting old as I definitely don't have the energy to stay up all night voluntarily on a regular basis Reg your never to old,how can you get bored, different sounds, different venues, different people,if you love your dancing, different moves every time just bring it on. billy
Guest gordon russell Posted November 5, 2008 Posted November 5, 2008 Paul, it ain't just the music it's going out to enjoy yourself,if you don't then ok,but lots do whatever their taste is.For a long time now l have returned to allnighters and have a feckin ball the key here is not to hammer it (every week ). When I do go out, I do it with an open mind and the desire for it to be good. That means people who want to dance, a wide variety of music and a good venue. But, usually and maybe the problem is most nighters play the same stuff, its disappointing! I often drive the 400 mile round trip up North to attend a nighter.....its a long way believe me. Especially when a nighter advertises itself as something, but fails to deliver. The same guests seem to be doing the rounds, playing the same stuff! So you can attend three different, big nighters in a short space of time and hear the same stuff hammered! I want to hear some NEW people playing out, then I have a chance of being excited and dancing a bit more (and I love dancing!). Its almost like a circuit of the same old same old...So, YES, its probably about going out less, which my recent experiences have certainly inspired. can't argue with that.l live near bedford and the opposite of your experience is true (except the dj thing, agree there) after rediscovering top notch venues/people/crac ect,we just love the drive to be where folk still live their lives to the full.Thats my view anyway.Remember IF YOU THINK OLD YOU'LL BE OLD (not aimed at you by the way lol) atb tezza
ImberBoy Posted November 5, 2008 Author Posted November 5, 2008 Chalky not sure why you have assumed I have been away from the scene? Is it because I served 22 years in the Army? I need to clear up one or two misconceptions, first I was in the British Army for 22 years and not in prison! Now days you can actually leave the camp gates and get married and have kid's n stuff, I even had a car and some civilian cloths. I joined up in 1984 and left three years ago, I was a nighter goer before I joined, I was a nighter goer whilst I served and I am a nighter goer now that I am a civilian again. I did the arse end of the Casino, a little Blackpool Mecca, Bradford "Bensons" Bradford "Queens Hall", Keel, The 100 Club, Drummonds, Cleethorpes (Dancing on the video, I'm the one in shorts white socks and sandals) The first Togetherness weekender, the last togetherness weekender, Bretbey (Chris Kings Birthday) Canklow (I was a regular) The Bank hall Miners Club, Winsford, Wilton, Middleton and Prestwich (Before the hype!) These are just the UK nighters I remember off the top of my head, I attended during the lean years and during the mean years, During my tours in Germany I would holiday with my family back in the UK, that's was the done thing to do and yup I smashed as many nighters as I could. I did every German Nighter and Scooter Rally, more than most Germans did apart from one or two. I wrote article after article for Echoes, and Manifesto, Scootering and a few bits for Mr Rimmer. I run the biggest scooter club in the world, do the nighters, run a business and head my family. I still find the time to be a local Magistrate and I can shat shite fook fight and ride a motor bike. I will continue to do the alnighters because that is where you meet the soul crew, hear the top tunes and be part of the most enduring musical culture the world has ever seen. To view it from the side lines is as fake as a Trannys fanny, no one needs to spend a fortune, no one needs to do drugs and no one needs to be scared. If you think you have heard all the sounds there are then get down to Middleton.

Mandy Posted November 5, 2008 Posted November 5, 2008 I used to do nighters all and every weekend for many years ... then I had my little boy and things changed. Nighters then were a good laugh and nobody cared about the politics of music/DJs/what a fool they made of themselves then ... I can't spend the whole next day in bed sleeping it off with an 8 year old needing me ... I can't be doing with the "is that an original or a pressing" and "look at that daft twat smiling and having a laugh" !!!! Far too political and serious nowadays .. I'd rather go McDonalds where you can do and say what you want without someone jumping down your throat for it!!!

So you can attend three different, big nighters in a short space of time and hear the same stuff hammered Thats not just true of nighters, you get the same at weekenders and ongoing soul nights. the same boring list of names and you know in advance what some of them are going to play. You also know that any number of local djs could ,and do, do better, when they get the chance, hey but why pay a local guy £30-50 when you pay somebody else £100+ Morning Chris/Sharon, Sorry Chris dont totally agree with your post, For me, variety being "The Spice Of Life" I think Middleton offers a different package to Burnley, Lifeline to the 100 club etc. Clubwise (locally) Bentinck to Pilsley and The Attic. Im in the fortunate position( sympathetic girlfriend)at this current time to be able to travel the length and breadth of the country (work allowing, ) and sympathise with people whose commitments dont allow that, family, monetary or otherwise. Having said that the effort does have to be made to break with normality. For instance The Attic was cancelled in Jan, virtually at a moments notice. Steve, I and The Withces shot up to York Soul Club and had a stormin night. I also saw you and Sharon at The Cleethorpes Mini-Niter in Jan and we had a right rant about a certain former frontline DJ, who played a concoction of electronically re-hashed Classic Soul, but it didnt deter from the excellent spots Ginger and Sean Chapman played. At the end of the day mate i would sooner listen to Butch, Mick H, Andy Dyson play out than Johnny Jones(forgive me if i have accidently dropped on the name of a local DJ) at the local Welfare. Not saying i will not support local do's though. Not being totally sure with regards to work this weekend i could potentially be out both Fri and Sat, the latter being the definite. Regards Paul

Paul-s Posted November 6, 2008 Posted November 6, 2008 (edited) If you think you have heard all the sounds there are then get down to Middleton. I have and I had heard nearly ALL the sounds they played in the main room. A lot are from play lists from Soul or Nothing...a few years ago. Eddie Japer Daye, Jonathan Capree etc.... Now, im not knocking it, just saying that i personally, like a bit of anticipation (with regard to music) from a nighter and Middleton doesn't do it for me. I think, if you dont get out to soul nights aswell as nighters, you may be assuming that the nighters are where the new stuff is being played and broken, but, in my experience, they often get it way after the event. Soul nights all over the country including, Three Greyhounds, Greatstone, Lowton, Mansfield, etc (sorry for all those i haven't named!) are all just as responsible for maintaining a sense of excitement on the scene and are often the places where a real sense of the orginal, musical ,ethos of nighters, is still maintained. Each to his own, obviously. But I had to answer the statement. Edited November 6, 2008 by paul-s

Guest posstot Posted November 10, 2008 Posted November 10, 2008 Sounds like imber boy nows how to control his ADHD....how much stuff can you ram into one lifetime!!! fookin fair play to you my old sparrow. If i'd done what you'd done in your lifetime i'd be 143!! Or ,are you a time lord, and you are actually 443!! . I think a lot of it comes down to tollerance levels, what job you do, and how much you like your sleep. I think being in the armed forces sets your tollerance levels higher than the average joe, due to extreme fitness training and deprevation of sleep and how to control that, and most of all positivity of mind set. Whereas most of us on civvy street moan about being tired after a nighter or two, on the bounce, i think you'd just be getting ready for a 30 mile hike, in 40lb of kit. Some people like to live life, as i assume you do at 125mph....some of us, me included, like to live life in the middle lane, and just occasionally slip into the fast lane for a quick burn...... .....in summary, i don't do nighters because i can't stand the tiredness kicking in anymore. But most importantly, as mentioned before by some other postee, i have young children and it doesn't set a good example coming home google eyed. ......yet on the other hand i did go to Barnsley earlier in the year, got off my trolley and loved every minute of it, including the drive home with the tunes blaring away. .....So perhaps i'm scared i'll like it too much, and my wife moans about how much soul is involved in my life as it is. Another reason is, the scene, except for the few shining lights out there is a bit like the old christmas motown album that comes out year on year...you know every track, and can't understand why they don't release some of the other output from the label....like in a lot of the soul allnighters-weekenders-nights play the same old tracks we've all heard year on year when they too could play some other, just as good and infinately better tunes, instead. ...... blah blah blah blah. politics politics!!! I love the music, more than the "scene" itself!!!

A musical opinion on a venue isn't a dig? If someone says "get to ---------- venue, if you want to hear new stuff" and the stuff isn't new,( in fact it was being played in smaller clubs years earlier and we were playing it), thats a FACT, not a dig. I think there is a large amount of Paranoia going around with some promoters who feel their venue needs to cover EVERYTHING in terms of the broad spectrum of 'soul' music. Some venues are BIG COMMERCIAL enterprises and thats fine, but dont tell me about the eclectic and open music policy and not expect a response. I LISTEN to music and I love it and I have visited a lot of venues and listened at ALL of them. Now -------------- may be the biggest, bestest, mostest, fullest, everest venue on earth, but it certainly isn't breaking musical ground. FACT and not a dig. And why should it do anything else? Its a successful all nighter venue and has a recipe that works for the nature of the 'social' event. As, I said, each to their own, but you are what you are.

Paul-s Posted November 12, 2008 Posted November 12, 2008 Oh well you are entitled to your opinion paul and so is everyone else, and i know a lot of peoples opinion of you is that you are also what you are .As for middleton im no expert but i know it hits the spot for an awful lot of people as do a lot of other clubs you seem to keep haveing a go at. I am indeed what I am. nothing more, nothing less. Its all we can hope for....if honesty prevails. I haven't had a go at any club. I just pointed out that some clubs claiming to be something that they are not. If DDA claimed we were an Northern soul oldies room or a pure crossover room, for instance, we would be misrepresenting what we do. So, maybe people need to actually read what I put and realise its not having a go, its pointing out some misrepresentation thats going on. I think every venue has the punters it deserves and thats whats needed. I attend Burnley when I can and , unlike yourself, I HAVE attended Middleton an many occasions and feel in a position to have an opinion......your permission granting, of course I have in fact visited, at some time or other, most nighters that have been and are going and I go for the music. Wilton was great on Friday, for instance. Once again, my initial statement was in response to someone who said "if you think you have heard all the sounds, get down to Middleton". I did and I had!
Guest squaw Posted November 12, 2008 Posted November 12, 2008 Ok no problem paul you have heard them all luckily i havent.
