You can do that just as well at a soul night as a nighter... I could be wrong but I don't think there's many people on here who never go out to listen to soul at some sort of event.

Can't think of any nighter with a music policy I'd want to listen to for ten hours.

The allniter Dave Thorley ran ticked a lot of the boxes for me...except the "in Greater Manchester" one tongue.gif

just had a look .... middleton is 290 and i've been there 3 times ....pow wow is 332miles

i never did biggrin.gif i may have been 3 times to middleton .... thats not saying i wanna go back

i always turn up early for any venue i go to so if the nighter starts at 8 by 3 i've been there for 7 hours and that's enough for me

i can't be arsed and there isn't an allnighter within 300 miles of me with a policy i'd even cross the street for

Cause I'm 54. have 3 grown kids i like to spend time with , a busy life, a busy week, want to play golf, have only 2 days in a week to relax, can't afford the travelling, often the music sends me to sleep, shift system not compatible ,the dog wants walking, am often djing at soul nights and am basically to knackered to be up all night at the weekend.

Apart from that can't think of anything really.

Week enders have been the way forward for 20 years.

Because the gear is shit and does not last long enough.

All nighters are so out of fashion.....with the newer music on todays scene.

My life is fecked up after 31 years of drug abuse, being smashed and asking the very same questions you are asking. And even today after it all that, society still has no place for me - fact.

I value the music more than the folks that front it - yes in certain cases.

And viewing the recent oldies allniter pictures on the galleries on SS - I shudder at the geared up over 50's monsters.

Having collected records and still collecting - why would I travel from my home to hear lesser tunes at other peoples expense including mine.

Thank you.

Nick.

I am always amazed at the amount of soul fans that are more than happy to click their fingers and mouse whilst sat in their computer room. ph34r.gif

If there are such big soul fans then how come you don't go to the Nighters?

Now you all have choice and no one is looking down on people who don't do the nighters its just that I am curious as to why you don't go?

Too old, too tired, too far, too expensive?

I know there will be those who say, "been there done that", but how can you all say this yet be on Soul Source morning noon and night, surely if you are such big soul fans you would want to dance to the music and see the reaction of a crowd to the latest spins?

I am 46 and regularly go to alnighters yet manage to fulfil all of my reasonability's both financially and family so without meaning to sound too personal..........

"What are the reasons for not doing the nighters"

hi

i still buy all kinds of soul music and rarely go to soul do's i would still buy and collect without a club dance scene how many more would or would they sell up without the club scene

The one at Berkeley Powerstation did for me also, great venue, travelled 240 miles to friends, then back over an hour to attend with the same friends, only to be greeted by a maximum 35 people in attendance, the people of Somerset, Gloucestershire & Wiltshire have lost a good night, you should hang your heads in shame, I was gutted for Dave & Malayka.

Simon is that you in the video clip with a Bob Marley wig on? Nice moves though, also I told you that piccie was frightening mate but I never let on about the serial killing's, Honest!! whistling.gif

As for nighters, Gail & I go to most, even the odd Oldies one but when we go there we know what to expect, as for the others, well it's different music from the Soul night scene (Mainly) & people don't like what they don't know. I understand the family reason & work commitment reason & if I was in the same boat I'd stay away but I'm luck enough to have retired at 50 plus I don't mind the travelling & most things are within 2 hours of home & as my Dad use to say, "Your a long time dead son, enjoy every day to it's limit" & he did & he is, for 13 long years, so we intend to do the same. :P

Anyway I don't particularly want all these "Keyboard Terrorist" at Nighters, means less room for this old man to dance about & wander the halls, they'd only moan their tit's off anyway, same as on here, so we're glad your bored with it & that you've been there done that, got the T-shirt, thank you for staying at home. wave.gif

THREE years ago me and some ole Torch mates purchased some sulphate from some proper HELLS ANGELS we know, wink.gif they warned us it was like rocket fuel, "yeah ok mate"

Cut a long story short 7 of us did a nighter, two nearly killed themselves, I and three others spent two days wondering if we'd ever come down.

It definitely is also a social thing I think, however much people say that the music is better than soul nights etc etc..

For me becoming a single parent in my forties with a son who has special needs and with no support network kinda put the kibosh on my social life...up until then I was out more times than the gas...niters soul nights and weekenders. Could party on down with the best of em and often was the last one standing. Can't even remember the last time I did a niter...probably Stoke in 2006.

It was hard having to stay in at first but then I got out of practise and the longer I went without going out the less I relished the prospect of long drives to socialise. I get out the odd time but prefer to do a soul night as I always drive then get back to my mates for a drink and relax before bed and I need my sleep as my lad is full of beans and on the go all the time and quite frankly I'd rather spend time with him as he is my absolute priority and being tired around him is neither good nor fair on him.

Even if I was able to go to niters I'm not that sure that I would cos I've done my time on the scene and now its time to take a back seat. It doesn't mean that I've gone off my soul...still love it with a passion and that will never change. "What are the reasons for not doing the nighters"

You can be a soul fan and not do nighters - otherwise there would have been more than us 300 regulars who kept it going in the 80s

1. Do nighters occasionally (Lifeline) but most of the time there's very little that floats my boat

2. I have a fecking brilliant wife and we have shed loads of mates off the scene who we like to spend time with

3. Unlike years ago I now have a demanding job - and like Baz I find it impossible to take it easy. Therefore I use Holidays on Mondays post Nighters when they're not took up snowboarding

4. Taking all this into account I would say that I'm not on the scene - I can live with that

I like to go to both nighters and soul nights and must say have enjoyed each and every one I have gone to this year.

Woz supposed to go to Stormin Soul just on Friday, but my car had other ideas i.e. was playing up so didn't dare drive (its going into the garage to get fixed this Thursday - hopefully nothing too serious!!).

I don't take any drugs apart from Proplus when I go to nighters, but wouldn't knock anyone who does, each to their own. Obviously when I drive I don't drink either and I do enjoy a drink

I can't afford to go out every weekend, as like collecting records and supporting me footie team (Sunderland wah hey) also. I do go out to soul dos most weekends though.

either single or in their 50's without as many commitments as they once had....you only have look round the average nighter venue, there aren't that many spring chickens about. Its ok to knock those who say they have been there and done it but they have and what have they got to prove???? f*ck all!!!!

Simon started the topic but he's been in the army many years if I remember rightly, correct me if I'm wrong, hardly off his t*ts every week travelling up and down the country. others as Spot says lucky enough to be retired and correct me if I'm wrong but also had many years away, wonder how he'd feel after 20+ years of all nighters, same question to anyone else who's had a long break? Most only come back to the scene when family grown up and mortgage paid or well on it's way to being paid. The nighter scene can soon takes it's toil week in week out, or even say two a month, especially with work and family to fit in. It ain't a cheap hobby either travelling the country.

The music is very much the same, even at venues that claim to be playing something different, for me there's very little I haven't heard to be honest and to hear it week in week out for 20 or so years.....well it does get a tad boring regardless of how good it is.

Simon's question a valid one but it don't take long for some to start slagging others does it as usual. Most people on here have f*ck all to prove to anyone, most have been there and done it and what they choose to do is nothing to do with anyone else. Why can't some just get on with what they want to do and leave others to do what they want?
