Guest
You can usually judge the mood of the place by what they respond to in the other DJ`s set, its not really rocket science (although sometimes listening to what others play it seems it is! ) Request wise, if I have it, ill play it.....I have a limit of two "educational" tracks thrown into the mix per set. Never forget who you are playing to!.....we`ve all seen/heard it.....far too many so called top DJ`s just play "their" biggies for themselves and their entourage Edited November 2, 2008 by Guest Link to comment Social source share

Mach
if you play at a venue pretty regulary the punters have a general idea what your spots gonna entail, therefore you could well surprise them by playing tunes that are unknown/semiknown of a different genre or just personal favs you would normally spin just at home maybe coz there slower and not very dancable etc. personally i think a 50/50 mixture is better and when i used to do a bit of spinning thats what i preferred personally.. but alas not all soulies want to listen to "something unknown" and will just vacate the dance floor no matter how good it is ,just because they,ve never heard it before...and all d,js know how to fill it up again..by playing the same old same old. So that makes two of us that don't know what you mean in a not understanding kinda way. if you have records in your box, then they should be there becuase you put them there cos you at some point are happy to play them...Surley? Or, and i think i know what you are trying to get to - you have records in your box that you would rather play than the ones the punters expect?- the answer is to take those out of your box! I am now off to the Science Department to finish building that rocket... Edited November 2, 2008 by Dave Abbott Link to comment Social source share
Chris Anderton
Firstly as the guest you have a certain licence to be a bit more risky, its the job of the promoter to book the right DJs and the job of the resident DJs to make sure everyone comes back next month.. Secondly, you are there to entertain, nobody wants to be subjected to an hour of tunes nobody knows. To sum up, to entertain and educate is the role of a DJ. If i get a request and i have it i play it, sometimes a request can trigger off what kind of sounds the punters want to hear. Of course some venues are advertised as newies or a certain genre of music, then you can do what it says on the tin....... Chris Link to comment Social source share
Geordiejohnson
I play what i love ...and p[eople who visit the friendship soul nights know what we (mark whiteley, myself) have to offer,.. many come for that something different rather than coming to hear run of the mill, however if im asked to dj away from the friendship i always make sure theres the odd floor filler just to keep it mixed up and ensure theres a bit for everyone Geeooordie Link to comment Social source share
Steve G
whenever really its just getting an idea of what a dj thinks when they dj Well it really depends Bearsy, be as brave as you can, but don't clear the floor for an hour. It also depends on the time you are on. Peak time then I think you have got to make a mark with the dancing crowd without having to resort to things like Mel Britt. Early doors you can be more adventurous. If DJing at a venue you haven't been to before, take a broader selection of sounds. Guest Beeks
Surely everything in your box is your taste and not what they hope you should have? I'd have thought they go hand in hand...yes you want to play the records you want to play...but I wouldn't play a set that I knew would kill the dancefloor even if I loved the records...that would be daft...I think it's a happy medium between the two...that saying i'd never play out a record I myself didn't love I just like to think I have good taste so presume everyone else does Link to comment Social source share

Then I lick the first finger of my right hand, stick it in the air, see which way the wind's blowing and hope for the best.....if none of the above work, I'm stuffed Hope that helps xx Link to comment Social source share
Spacehopper
i always try to take a wide selection and will play requests if i have them (and they havnt already been played a dozen times!)...but wont play a tune just cos i think its the mutts nutts !!...first and foremost they have to be DANCERS ! after all isnt that what the majority of people are there for ?!.... sometimes ive heard djs play a great real souful tune but it empties the floor....play it at home,in the car but not out unless its the end of the night maybe ....NOT half way through or even at the end of your set and clear the floor for the next dj...in my opinion Link to comment Social source share

Or if you're Jo, you could always sing! Edited November 3, 2008 by Jerry Hipkiss Link to comment Social source share
Guest
What about if you had 25 requests in your hour set what would you do then Steve Thats never ever happened in one set, I maybe get asked for a dozen requests at the very most (in the bogs and at the bar as well as behind the decks) and I may have a couple of those and if they can be shoehorned into place then ill play them, but my spot always has to have a flow to it. and if I cant fit it in correctly then it wont get played. I always hope the DJ has something i haven't heard in their playbox, same as I always have! How many times have you played out at a venue and struggled playing known stuff? How many times have you played out at a venue and struggled playing semi-known stuff? No-one knows how a dancefloor will react. I've seen dancefloors empty to My Proposal.(Definately a dance record) I've seen people shuffle along to Temptaion 'bout to get you' by The Knight Bros I've played sets of great soulful semi knowns to empty dancefloors but had people shake my hand and tell me how much the've appreciated hearing the set. It's great doing early spots to play semi-knowns. I regularly put down records and say to myself-glad I managed to stick that one in. If I'm playing the same well knowns all the time I get boooorrrrrreeeeeddddd. Lastly I play any request if I have it. If it's something I don't rate or like it won't bein my box anyway! Whoever asked has paid good money and deserve to hear a tune played on their night out. Link to comment Social source share

I would always want to go away from a do thinking ' I've not heard that before'. If it's red hot, the searching starts immediately!! I get very few spots as a dj but always hope I've dropped something in not too many know, but will like and want to hear again. I certainly don't wanna be a sheep chasing such and such a record because someone else packs the floor with it. For me that's dull and to be honest shows a dj is unsure of his/her own faith in their own stuff. Link to comment Social source share
Dave West
As a guest DJ with a leaning towards Motown I get bookings because of my records. ( does that make sence) Therefore I play to the crowd secondly Play a few to educate (sort of) and Play any requests I can and Dont repeat what the last DJ played Not had any complaints so far WESTY Link to comment Social source share
