oldsteve woomble Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 pmsl.... come on then!, cater for me.. Jayne.x. I'm available for christenings, tea dances, barmitzvahs and soul nights of all persuasions - and always aim to please! Jayne, to me it's all soul music (from whenever). The Masqueraders, Reggie Alexander, Dysons Faces, Norman Connors, Marc Evans & DJSpinna/Ovasoul7 in the same set wouldn't faze me in the slightest! In fact, see you at York on Saturday!!.............. Lets ave it........ Steve
Peter99 Posted October 29, 2008 Posted October 29, 2008 merlin & the magicians, a poke play at cleethorpes although i'm sure searling got one as well at some point, almost sure it wouldn't have been russ!!!! .... just saying Not wanting to split hairs but I think Trickie played this at the Casino first. Probably came from John Anderson - I think Poke was working for him at the time so he probably did have one two. One of my favourite modern (oldie) spins.
Peter99 Posted October 29, 2008 Posted October 29, 2008 Soul Sam certainly had a copy. I kept tapes of his Modern Set from a St Ives Dayer (10/4/83). Here's what he played - Flight, Philly All Stars, Record Player, Jan Jones, Booker Newberry Third, Lady, Ike Strong, Alfie Davison, Mother Fox, Patches, Walter Jackson, King Tutt, E J Rice, Melvin Moore, Will Collins & Willpower, Brothers Gilmore, Charles Johnson, Cecil Lyde, Dee Edwards, Luther Davis Group, Skip Mahoney, Flaming Emeralds, Mind & Matter, Larry Houston The Booker Newberry hit the Top 10 the very next day!! Mark C What a playlist. Loved the stuff that was being played back then.
Guest Posted October 29, 2008 Posted October 29, 2008 (edited) Hi Simon, Oh my gosh - what are you missing!!.. Those DJ's have stunning boxes of vinyl (all genre's), I could go on and on about their credentials. Flanny's got a long history on the modern scene, and the other 3 all DJ at the Hilton weekenders. Deffo worth a listen. They're all my favourites.. Jayne.x Well I asked around and people I trust said Im not missing much . But can you direct me to some playlists Jayne ? I did hear Flanny at Yarmouth I can indeed Simon, but there are loads, more probably on EMS but check out prestwich lookbacks, hilton lookbacks, Bury lookbacks, Blackburn, lowton and more. You should come and play out oop north and judge for yourself. Jayne.x. Edited October 29, 2008 by Miss BurySoul

Must admit , London is pretty dire most of the time but right up North in scandanavia is pretty good , and Ive heard Scotland is ok ..
Dave West Posted October 29, 2008 Posted October 29, 2008 at the St. Ives reunion this saturday the 'Theatre' room (where they used to play Oldies in the 70s) is going to have "Modern Oldies" played in there. I have my theory as to what a "Modern Oldie" should or may be but have heard many different definitions over the last few months when discussing the term with others. Can anyone please let me know his/her definition? thanks in advance. from a modernist old person with a hint of crossed-over signals from a much loved scene. Only a thought ,but perhaps the promoter knows what a "Modern Oldie" is. Westy

Guest WPaulVanDyk Posted October 30, 2008 Posted October 30, 2008 Somethings in life ain't simple and to me a Modern oldie is something which was released years ago ie 70's and 80's. maybe even early 90's but or records of the last 15 years to me is Modern it's new and hardly that old. in fact what about if it's said a 60's Modern tune how stupid. For me there is Northern, Motown and Modern and crossover although i don't get it unless it's refering to songs that are more disco or funk etc yet have a Northern soul ie Move On Up. That's how i define things and i don't want it to be anymore after all Soul and Dance has god knows how many sub genres next it will be gospel soul and southern soul and Doo wop and so on
