(Yet again), worth a read if confused as to what "Modern Soul" actually means in this context...

Voices from the Shadows No.13

"Modern Soul" - Rod Dearlove

"Blackpool Mecca and All That: An Investigation into the Roots of Modern Soul" - Tim Brown

Sometimes you've got to tell 'em 3-4 times Pete!

:P

Sean

And on each and every thread regarding "modern soul", which we all know was first coined in (insert date here) by (insert name of choice here)........................................................etc etc etc :wicked::huh::lol:

To be honest, I always think it helps to have actually been there

But where did all those people go.... after 1984... Steve?

Are we still waiting for them to return - or did they never really exist? :(

Sometimes I think everyone else was a figment of our imagination - a mirage - a hallucination. :wicked:

Then I think of Crofty... sat on the door in his big cardy or his damart... and it all comes flooding back!

:)

It's as someone said earlier...

rolleyes.gif

... It's a description for any record previously classed as a 'Modern' record, now too old to be truly 'Modern'.... hence 'Modern Oldie'.

End of.

Sean

Not Quite end of....ok example

Some Spinal Tap gentleman...lets call him Sydney Spandex has a penchant for Thrash metal...which as we know is a sub genre of Heavy Metal/Rock...does the promoter of the night who sees Sydney as his target audience advertise his event as...

A) A night of Thrash Oldies and Nu Thrash

or

cool.gif A night of Thrash Metal

The answer is obviously B...Thrash Metal is a sub genre of Rock...Modern is a sub genre of Soul...all Thrash Metal comes under one umbrella whether it is newly released or 10 years old...because generally it is the same sound...I think the same applies to Modern...if the sound is different...It no longer can be called Modern but falls into another catagory...

I hope this explains my stance on this matter :wicked::huh::lol:

What about 60s newie oldies ?

Stuff like Doug Banks - Kurt Harris - George Freeman etc ..............etc ............etc..............etc

A new soul night perhaps ! "A night of 60s newie oldies " "with an extra room for modern oldies"

:wicked: That will confuse the local soul fans who only know the oldies !!! As for the rest of the locals who just want to have a night out !!!!!!

Does the term Crossover Oldie exist?

Ruby Andrews- Just Loving You would be the first nomination for this category.

No..............that 45 is just a quality "Accross the board" generally enjoyed Soul oldie nowdays ! (and it was cut in 1968 anyway so its NS Really anyway? )

Crossover is a redundant term nowdays IMO ?? With so much variety and with no clear cut decade to slot your fav 45 into ?

With such a plethora of music to dig !!!!

What about "A night of New release oldie sounding tunes" :wicked:

I suppose you could say "Modern Scene Oldies" but then again Northern all-niters had one or two modern jocks 1980-1985ish . So whats Northern Modern Newies ?:lol:ph34r.gif

northern modern newies?... :lol::thumbup:

could that be Lenny Williams - gotta lotta love, Angie stone - wish I didn't miss you, Sydney Barnes - standing on solid ground then ?????..

well technically, northern niters still do have modern jocks... we had Bob Hinsley, Sean Livesey,Barry Maleady and Flanny at Bury last month..

Oh just bring back across the board!!. :D

Wouldn't it be good if all Dj's could do a set from any genre - all to the same high standard.

I'm thinking it would be things like

1. Will Collins and Willpower

2. Daybreak

3. Larry Houston-Let's Spend Some Time Together

I guess those would have been the ones to get played when it was starting to be recognized as its own sub-genre.

-J.

Mind & Matter - Im under your spell (I think is and old cover up of an old days of casino)

Alfie Davidson - Love is a serious bussiness

etc....

Hi Simon,

Oh my gosh - what are you missing!!..

Those DJ's have stunning boxes of vinyl (all genre's), I could go on and on about their credentials. Flanny's got a long history on the modern scene, and the other 3 all

DJ at the Hilton weekenders. Deffo worth a listen. They're all my favourites.. :D

The term crossover was coined was it not to refer to Soul that appealed to both 6ts fans and Modern Soul fans in that the music was largely from the late 6ts very early 7ts when the 6ts sound was morphing in to the 7ts sound. Hence the crossing over of the two styles. Ruby Andrews' track Just Loving You is a prime example of this style and that is why it has across the board appeal.

Soul Sam certainly had a copy. I kept tapes of his Modern Set from a St Ives Dayer (10/4/83). Here's what he played - Flight, Philly All Stars, Record Player, Jan Jones, Booker Newberry Third, Lady, Ike Strong, Alfie Davison, Mother Fox, Patches, Walter Jackson, King Tutt, E J Rice, Melvin Moore, Will Collins & Willpower, Brothers Gilmore, Charles Johnson, Cecil Lyde, Dee Edwards, Luther Davis Group, Skip Mahoney, Flaming Emeralds, Mind & Matter, Larry Houston

The Booker Newberry hit the Top 10 the very next day!!
