pikeys dog
Edwin Starr started out recording for Ric Tic, who were then bought out by Motown, and his contract was transferred to them. Link to comment Social source share

Dave Moore
Hi Mick, Sounds like you would benefit from buying a few issues of this mag Mate (blatant plug). The labels of Berry Gordy and the arists/people involved feature heavily: THERES THAT BEAT! Edited October 26, 2008 by Dave Moore Link to comment Social source share

As mentioned above, Motown bought out Ric-Tic and associated labels such as Golden World. Ric-Tic in particular was strong competition for Motown, and many of the Ric-Tic recordings actually used the same highly talented Detroit session musicians as Motown. All of Edwin's original Ric-Tic 45s are worth picking up and include some real soul classics. Some can be found for just a few pounds. Others are rarer and more expensive - notably Scott's On Swingers [a version of Stop Her On Sight] and You're My Mellow. Edwin's later work on Motown is also significant in it's own right - tracks such as 25 Miles and My Weakness Is You. Tracks which originally came out in the USA on Ric-Tic, such as Agent OO-Soul and Headline News, were also released later by Motown on the Tamla-Motown label in the UK. In the USA, "Motown" was actually a family of labels including Motown itself, Tamla, VIP, Gordy etc. Hope this helps.
