Northern295 Posted October 19, 2008 Posted October 19, 2008 This topic can probably fit into the "useful trivia" or "boring b@stard" category. But I've just finished reading the biography of Aretha Franklin written by Mark Bego and there are a few things that I didn't know before (not exactly Einstien material !) 1. Erma Franklin who sang- Whispers getting louder on Duke, is Aretha's big sister. 2. Whilst exiting a Chicago limousine in 1968, Aretha was confronted by a 14 yr old runaway girl, Aretha gave her a $100 bill, that young girl was Oprah Winfrey. 3. Chuck Jackson, is actually the brother of Rev. Jesse Jackson. Now, I never knew that...... And that's why I get a huge thrill when reading about this fantastic Soul scene. alan
Guest TONY ROUNCE Posted October 19, 2008 Posted October 19, 2008 Chuck Jackson is not Jesse Jackson's brother. They're not even related. Rev. Jesse Jackson's mother Helen Burns was raped in 1941, and he was the result. She eventually married a man named Charles Jackson and Jesse took his name. I think that the Oprah story is just that, i.e. 'A Story", too. Doesn't sound like the author worried too much about facts to me... ...However, the late Erma Franklin most certainly was Aretha's elder sister. And a far better singer, too...
Dave Moore Posted October 19, 2008 Posted October 19, 2008 (edited) Post removed. Didn't see Tony's post. Erma's release was also on Brunswick - not Duke. Edited October 19, 2008 by Dave Moore

Northern295 Posted October 19, 2008 Author Posted October 19, 2008 ok, I screwed up with Erma Franklin label, i've got the record and it is Brunswick demo. and yes the book talks about the third sister Carolyn, who died early through cancer. Glad I added the dislsclaimer that it's Mark Bego's book !! alan
Guest mel brat Posted October 19, 2008 Posted October 19, 2008 Erma Franklin appeared live at the Lafayette in Woverhampton in 1974.... and I missed her, damn it!
Liamgp Posted October 20, 2008 Posted October 20, 2008 I'm eagerly awaiting jazz guitarist Kenny Burrell's biography where they discuss his owning one of only two copies of 'Do I Love You'...
ZapatootheTiger Posted October 20, 2008 Posted October 20, 2008 I'm currently reading both Graham Poll's (football ref - aka "The Troll from Tring") ~ "Seeing Red" and Radio DJ Johnnie Walker's bio or auto-bio. I'll report in if either also claim to have a copy of DO I LOVE YOU?

I put together a very nice CD of Carolyn's RCA material for Kent a couple of years ago. We could do with shifting a few more copies, so dig deep, people!
