Does It Really Matter

Been reading a lot of comments on here lately regarding people who can't dance, or who don't dance to soul "properly" Either been about the POG thing or new recruits, I also read about the Wigan days somewhere that only the best dancers could get on the floor - that can't be right surely? Does it really matter? I dance like an epilectic in a strobe-light shop (apologies to any epilectics on here - and, little tip, stay away from strobe-light shops :D ) but don't give a monkeys when I'm up & into the music, which is what we, and it, are all really about surely. For instance, I enjoyed the dancing on POG, mainly 'cos I can't do it, but some of the comments about 'athletics' or 'gymnastics' etc.......... What happened to live & let live.

I'd like your views on this because I'll be going out soon after a looong break - or I will be as long as some self-important pr*ck at the do doesn't think it's OK to have a pop at my shuffling

Well said tobes it's got nothing to do with the way you dance, if you love the music then just do what you can do and don't give a monkeys what other people think

No one should give a flying, if you're into it and loving it then that's what its all about - dance for yourself and you can't go wrong.

I've never witnessed this "he / she can't dance" thing on the more progressive scene or whatever we're allowed to call it; other than when the Grebos from Upstairs at Rock City used to come down to the soul room to head bang to JD Bryant; they got some stick  . Was it more prevalent in the 70s or is it a nostalgia scene thing?

I'd say that the people who are good dancers are in the minority so don't worry. Nobody really gives a rats. Myself I prefer to watch people who have more of an unusual, less conventional style as its much less serious and you can see they're enjoying the music without worrying about what other people think

As long as your feeling the groove & expressing yourself, who gives a damn, not sure where the only the best dancers danced at Wigan came from, certainly the best dancers tended to be at the front near the stage & it was a little little scary, cos there where some truly awesome dancers, the likes of which I have never seen since, unless you witnessed it, you cant even come close to imagining it, all to the beat, everything, tricks the lot.........there is no one I have seen in the past 15 - 20 years who can dance like that now........but for me personally, I wasnt intimidated by the dancers themselves at all, I just aspired to be able to get better, so I could dance up near the stage without feeling self conscious............when I was younger I could swing a fair old hoof, but never got any where near to the standard of the best........sooooo graceful too..............I would practice endlessly on the balcony in M's on that bit of hardboard, then go & throw me self around in the main room...........I remember at the Top of the World & Locarno Alldayers, I would spend the whole time, on the edge of the dancefloor, just kinda two stepping, waiting for the break to practice my spins for Wigan the next week !!!!!!!!!!! rolleyes.gif These days I dont think it matters.............feel the groove n let it move ya.

Best Russ

dont know bout you guys but time and the elements, (and the occassional overnite stay in a rather damp and drafty bus shelter), have taken their toll on the old joints and as a result im not as flexible as i used to be. I think everybody on our scene deserves a bloody great pat on the back for still being able TO dance at this age. Dancing, for most folk of the over 40`s and above age group, is restricted to the occassional wedding reception or, perish the thought, a rather drunken office christmas party. So with this in mind, i say... if it feels good... do it!! thumbup.gif

I don't think it matters if you can't dance. Personally though i enjoy watching the good dancers and it would be a bit crap if nobody could dance wouldn't it? It is a dance scene after all...

The smile on your face is more important than the style of your feet. (Or anything else for that matter). wink.gif

I don't think it matters at all to be honest...it's like any social scene...some people excel at dancing...some people have no rhythm...but everyone loves Soul...and that's the main thing

I always thought I was an Ok dancer, but one night at a casino anniversary my mates pushed me on the stage (go on Smivee you can win it go on) I thought if I win how will I get that stereo system home on the train. wacko.gif

It was strange listening to the music from on the stage, all the faces peering at and you couldn't tell at first what the record was it was so echoey.

Anyway I came second or third to Vernon, shown up or what

The records 2 out of the 3 were Eula Cooper Let Our Love Grow and Johnny Taylor Friday Night.

 What an odd thing to say, I don't think I have ever seen somebody dance who thinks they are so vane at a soul do. :P

Seen a few oddities at the Ritz in Manchester who thought they were cool and great but they were just plain weird

I think that people entered the competition on the dance floor and then picked to go into the final so yeah not bad but as I saw weird when you hear the sound from behind the speakers and dancing in full light never helps ones soulfull flow.

Yeah I know what you mean...it's the same as DJing without monitors I suppose...music sounds weird echoing back to you

I dont give a fecking shit anymore about other peoples opinions about fecking anything I do !

If i fancy a mad dance I will have a mad dance !

If I like a tune I will try and find it and buy it and love it weather it is a reactivated oldie, an overlooked newie or a overplayed newie or oldie ! (or a new un -released)

If I fancy getting high as a cloud on my own I fecking will ! If I want to drink 25 cans of Stella on a Monday night it is because I fecking felt like it !

If I want to have perverted Cocaine sex with a Russian prostitute I damn well fecking will !!! (maybee not) whistling.gif

And I am well past giving a fecking shite about what anyone else thinks about what I think !!

Have a good life ! Oh.............And make Hay whilst the fecking sun is out shining !

Apparently that state of mind comes to us all when we reach a certain age Mossy! (Like the old eccentric woman who shall wear purple if she so desires! (oops, I'm already there! )

Its all about enjoying yourself and the music, thats ALL that matters surely? And anyway, if you look at some of the winners of Northern dance competitions (eg Blackpool week-ender) dare I say it I wouldnt necessarily agree with the judges choices.....dance appreciation (akin to the appreciation of any art form) to me is very subjective. For example,I personally am no fan of floorwork or acrobatics, but love to see a few nifty in-time spins, whereas other peoples' opinions may (and do) differ I know, who gives?

I used to practise dancing "Northern soul "stylee" in front of the mirror at 17, whereas, at 41, I hardly daren't even look in the mirror but I still love dancing to the music I love, and if anything enjoy dancing even more now than I did in my teens, probably because (like you Mossy) I don't care what people think!

I heard a rumour ....(if one is desperate to "fit in" say) that a certain Mr Sadot was running Northern Soul dance classes not so long ago......f**k that! rolleyes.gif

P.S: Fred and Ginger knew what it was all about! :boxing: check this!

Ive never been a dancer however i remember many, many years ago talking to someone who graced Whitworth St and his synopsis was very simple. if you could transfer the drummers actions on whatever record to your feet, you'll NEVER go wrong.

Try it, forget back drops and spins go for the drummer... :(

You are very right !!!

I just think people should be able to do whatever they want to have fun (as long as they are not hurting no one) !

I just have a big problem with "The Fun Police" - They seem to be everywhere at the moment (not just on the soul scene)

Dancing is a fantastic way of expressing the fact that you are having a great time IMO !

Weather you are a Backdroppin, spinning athlete, or a overweight, out of breath, unfit dude with two left feet (I fall into the latter :( )

Just get on the floor and enjoy the music and the nights !!! :D

sorry but its all about good dancing.of all the genres of cult music this one is about the dancing not being inclusive or have a go! come on, i appreciate the cameraderie and socialist inclusive attitude but i want to be inspired by peoples moves and see passion translated into movement. I can go to a wedding and listen to soul round yer 'andbag any time.

we would all be liars if we said we hadnt smirked at some riverdance antics perpetrated by out of time kangeroo. If you are too old just slow down and dig the grooves, im afraid its all about the skill of the feet for me, as president bush might have said " its the dancing stupid!".
