Miss Schmidt Posted October 20, 2008 Author Posted October 20, 2008 (edited) It's easy to say garage GARIDGE-see it's easy. I was always aware that garage had come from paradise garage. So I presume they would have used the term in USA. Maybe? Anyone here actually went to Paradise Garage? Familytree went she (or he?) said. If I read it right? Garidge???!!!! HAHAAAA English people are so funny...they can't speak! Edited October 20, 2008 by Miss Schmidt
Guest familytree Posted October 20, 2008 Posted October 20, 2008 Ah ok. Still can't really imagine that they started calling it Garage in the UK and not in the USA. Never heard that before..English people can't even say "Garage" properly hahaha ha true... anyway in more recent times we decided to call it 'soulful dance' so as not to scare the purist away from our nights.( a cunning trick) .. but it did! despite mixin it up! dont believe in one type of music all night in one room... ugh, so long as its soulful get it on!... ! never mind eh xx
Kev Moore Posted October 20, 2008 Posted October 20, 2008 Thanks for the welcome Kev... we must have met?? lots of the same haunts back in the day ha, small world indeed! bit daunting commenting in here, you guys know your stuff... starting out at wigan myself i always thought that if a natural healthy progression followed or was allowed(and it was still open!) then 'soulful house/garage/dance would have been played at wigan today!... has all the elements, the little independant labels for the collectors.. fab lyrics etc.... shall i sign off quickly before Im put in my place?! tee hee x You're welcome familytree Always kept an interest in all the music. Still collect northern and disco and southern and modern. If it sounds good and soulful and uplifts my spirit it's good enough for me. But I live in a little cave with no curtains and survive on beans and toast. (With cheese on a good week). No honestly I think it's great that we have so many different styles to choose from and celebrate. A bit like I imagine Betty's hot pot tasting in the Rovers. God I'm hungry. When I think of the new Soulful/gospel/house tunes I think. ANGELS WITHOUT WINGS CANNOT FLY. coz some of that music really soars. Kev

If I wanna hear House or Disco I would go to hear Maurice Fulton or Rahaan and go to nights like Electric Chair in Manchester was..I know I'm kinda contradicting myself here
Cunnie Posted October 20, 2008 Posted October 20, 2008 You'll need one of these Cheers, Mark R Thanks for the tip on this Mark. So glad I bought it when you pointed it out to me Ah ok. Still can't really imagine that they started calling it Garage in the UK and not in the USA. Never heard that before..English people can't even say "Garage" properly hahaha We can say Garige proper up er'e in Yorkshire Ahh well done Mark, knew I had seen one, no details on Google bizarrely, pretty sure I bought this but can't find the damned thing, I hate CD's I lose about 2 a week!! Came out on a triple 12" vinyl pack Jocko so don't go searching through the CD's for it.

Lost a little atmosphere for me when it moved to the Bass Museum. Quite eclectic sets played there.
Miss Schmidt Posted October 20, 2008 Author Posted October 20, 2008 Oh I won't know any of those as I'm in the UK for just about 3 years now. Melbourne? Thought that was in OZ not in Derbyshire?

Hmm thats bad news then as pretty sure I haven't bought any vinyl LPS for a long time, just turned my record room upside down for nothing it would appear!! Is there some unwritten rule these days that the House threads have to be the latest threads on here? Off for my beauty sleep with some Yoruba Soul.

Kev Moore Posted October 20, 2008 Posted October 20, 2008 Oh I won't know any of those as I'm in the UK for just about 3 years now. Melbourne? Thought that was in OZ not in Derbyshire? Lots of places all over the world named after places in Old Blighty. Getting back to Kenny Bobien-Does anyone know of any dates he might be playing over here or am I going to have to fly to New Jersey for a summer break?

Myspace seems to be the place to find these now, I just dont have the patience, but listen to the track on his page and makes me think maybe I should. Okay Guten Nacht from me definitely this time. And looking at his page I think Dennis Ferrer should be our topic for our midnight chat tomorrow, Justifiable, what a tune, Edited October 20, 2008 by jocko

Guest andyrattigan Posted October 20, 2008 Posted October 20, 2008 'Solid Ground' is one beautiful slice of Inspirational Modern Soul- no contest also it's an early DJ Spen production- the soulful sound of Baltimore and then some... Best Dr Bob Jones First time I heard that record you spun it in Galway, Ireland when I used to live there. Another gem you played that night was Lenny Fontana with Black Sun's version of Al Hudson's Spread Love. Great night of quality house music.

Always a great line up. I went to Crossfire 2 weeks back and there the "different rooms" thing was great. I wandered between the RnB room and the Northern room all night. In Middleton the Modern Room was empty..shame but it was. Nice to meet you too x

Nice to meet you too x you should definately come to southport, you would love it im sure... and yes you need different rooms in an event of that size with so many genres... just mean some venues split hairs and never the twain shall meet... all a nonsense to me. bedtime love x
jocko Posted October 20, 2008 Posted October 20, 2008 Okay found it, new I had one I have a CD from him from 2004, called Wonderful, on UrbN'FLo, its a half live CD and to be honest not sure I gave it that many listens at time, off to bed with and will report back tomorrow. Can scan it if anybody wants.
Guest andyrattigan Posted October 20, 2008 Posted October 20, 2008 Another great House track with great Modern Room potential is Kerri Chandler's -Tomorrow from the EP Street Music. Any one else know it? I would post it up here but I cant find any links for it.

So I presume they would have used the term in USA. Maybe? Anyone here actually went to Paradise Garage? the music got tagged Garage over here because of Dave Lee's (Joey Negro) releases on Garage trax records.. Adeva, Blaze etc. Really he was releasing Zanzibar records but as we didn't know any better the name stuck.
Mark R Posted October 21, 2008 Posted October 21, 2008 Ahh well done Mark, knew I had seen one, no details on Google bizarrely, pretty sure I bought this but can't find the damned thing, I hate CD's I lose about 2 a week!! No CD for me Jock.......nice 4 pack vinyl LP, picked up as a new release in Dancetracks NYC..........some things you just never forget!! Actually, as I recall, the CD didn't have all tracks contained on LP, so I reckon LP is best bet, but don't hold me to it! Cheers, Mark R
Mark R Posted October 21, 2008 Posted October 21, 2008 When Mark Coddington didWithout Boundaries it was awesome when it was in Melbourne Derbyshire. Lost a little atmosphere for me when it moved to the Bass Museum. Quite eclectic sets played there. It's fair to say, like many soul clubs/events, it ran it's course and played it's part in the history of our scene in the UK Cheers, Mark R
Mark R Posted October 21, 2008 Posted October 21, 2008 Always too easy to be looking for 12's of this kind of stuff, so don't miss things like this JAP CD for the cut "Hiya Luv"...........definitely a big Without Boundaries spin for myself and Fish...........one of Kenny's finest moments for me (but it is hard to pick!)...........also came on US King Street vinyl LP: Cheers, Mark R
Steve G Posted October 21, 2008 Posted October 21, 2008 Ahh Steve those late Friday nights on 24-7.. The abuse i used to recieve on the forums for playing House hahahaha. I used to get quite a few US dj's listen in too.. Terry Hunter, Halo and the staff at Large recs Chicago. They were good times as we were amongst the first doing that on the net. Now anyone can have a go. Ahhh it's you!!! - Hiya Tony

I would post it up here but I cant find any links for it. Yeah, I've got it. I haven't played it for a few years and it's quite good but there's an awful lot better from the same period imo. Stuff like Dennis Ferrer, Michelle Weeks, Colonel Abrams, Erro, Stephanie Cooke, Blaze, Louis Benedetti and others I can't remember right now.
Guest dundeedavie Posted October 21, 2008 Posted October 21, 2008 Complete Rubbish. Now your definetly makeing this up as you go along. Can you unzip your anoraks a little and just enjoy the music ?
Guest Nik Mak Posted October 21, 2008 Posted October 21, 2008 Can you unzip your anoraks a little and just enjoy the music ? No. Anul retention is a must if you are a true soul fan.
Barry Posted October 21, 2008 Posted October 21, 2008 I don't mind Kenny's voice, it is obviously of the right stuff but he does have a habit of 'over' singing a record if you catch my drift. Don't get me wrong I've bought his stuff from the Soundmen On Wax stuff up and still do but his tendency to get a little over involved occassionally gets on me tits.
Kev Moore Posted October 21, 2008 Posted October 21, 2008 It's fair to say, like many soul clubs/events, it ran it's course and played it's part in the history of our scene in the UK Cheers, Mark R Absolutely-lots of fond memories of The Arms and The Museum.
Kev Moore Posted October 21, 2008 Posted October 21, 2008 Can you unzip your anoraks a little and just enjoy the music ? Wow! Even Modern enthusiasts are called anoraks now. I'M TRULY HONOURED.
Barry Posted October 21, 2008 Posted October 21, 2008 Wow! Even Modern enthusiasts are called anoraks now. I'M TRULY HONOURED. So could Modern Enthusiasts seen to be suffering from M.E. (Modern Enthusiasm)?

Hi Barry I can understand how you come to that conclusion. But then I realize that that's his style. And lets face it with a voice like that I don't think you can have overkill. I tend not to play his stuff over and over but dig into when I need a burst. Ta Kev
Barry Posted October 21, 2008 Posted October 21, 2008 And lets face it with a voice like that I don't think you can have overkill. I couldn't listen to a whole album of Kenny's on the bounce I don't think mate, buyt that's me. The guys got a brilliant voice, I guess we're not disputing that, the rest is just down to personal taste I reckon.

This was where we over here coined the term Garage. In the US it was just House.

Why did record shops like the Dj store in Oakland park Boulevard (Fort Lauderdale) Which was run by Brian Tappert have a section dedicated to Garage? Why did I bring back to the UK in late 1991 nearly 3,000 12 singles beleiving they were US Garage? Or maybe I made the name up off the top of my head and I was responsible for a whole movement? NOT! The name comes from the original club regardless of when it shut & was not made up by Dave Lee or anyone else in the uk I would have thought nameing the label GARAGE TRAX was more a homage to the genre already established in the USA.It was also a way of gaining some instant credability too. I played the music from middle of 88 onwards (in Miami) and kept playing it right thru the 90's (Still play it now!) when I came back to the UK late 91. I've always known it as US Garage that was originally championed by the club Paradise Garage & that all comes from when I lived and played in the country that created the stuff. Sorry if it doesn't tally with what you beleive but I can't change what I lived thru.

First 'Zanzibar' now The label name (BY the way there WAS a U.S. label called 'Garage Trax' back then trying to find it so you can tell me I'm wrong about that too). The high lighted part is there for a reason.

I never said there wasn't a Garage Trax. levan played Disco, synth pop and anything else that took his fancy. Tony H played the New Jersey sound that we in the UK called Garage.. Garage was a useful moniker but not the truth. Watch the video.

Sorry if it doesn't tally with what you beleive but I can't change what I lived thru. i dont think there is much of a time span in all of this but watch the video, it says it all, listen to Tony Humphreys and the other guys who speak on it.. when they talk of the English invasion side steppin N.Y for N.J. Ace ( Mungin) tells me the british were waving cheque books around the club at the time and that they had no name for the sound beyond 'club' music or club R&B. i dont doubt his accounts of the time with his history. Nelson Roman of 'Big Beat' records was known as Nelson 'Paradise' Roman, he was A&R for the label at the time, signing the guys in N.J so i would have thought this a perfect time to label it 'garage' if they were going to? was it Damien de cruise in england with 'jack trax' then 'Garage trax' around 88?... all a close knit scene at the time so whether it was damien, dave or norman who coined the fraze it matters not but it was a british thing im sure of it!... well almost!
Guest Posted October 21, 2008 Posted October 21, 2008 Not only that The Garage name was being milked by all and sundry after it's closure.. "instant credability too" Says it all really.
