Also try having a listen to a guy called 'CeCe Rogers', said to have the best male vocal voice on the House/Garage scene.

We call it "Soulful house" too. Haven't heard the word garage to describe it for several years now. As you say that UK stuff is garage.

There is always good soulful house stuff out there, but not so easy to hear it out. The 'Soul Heaven' nights are worth checking out, along with any night 'Bobby and Steve' are at, but to be honest, its a lot easier to find a local soul night than a decent Soulful House night.

A ideal niter for me would be quality rare up-tempo Northern in one room/Modern and Soulful house in the other. Unfortunatly i don't know of anywhere like this at the moment! Anyone know different?

The great Paul "Trouble" Anderson, the only real Trouble , used to have a great jingle on his fantastic Kiss FM shows (long before it was the station it is now). It was along the lines of "Garage is where you park your car, House is where you live, the sounds of Advance Black Dance" or something like that! And everything he played was soulful (IMVHO!)

Agreed re CC Rodgers, its almost the Frank Wilson of House , there are far better vocalists out there in the House (aka Soulful House, etc etc) world,

Forgot to say look out for his wife Su Su Bobien, a fantastic vocalist with some great tracks.

Sad to hear that about London not having such nights, mid to late 90's used to travel down their regularly and there were always a number of decent nights, Bobby and Steve have always been involved too, great guys, anyone remember their Prestatyn appearance?

I did hear about it and do know you dabble more than others on the scene so was being a bit cheeky, was serious about the tracks though, thought as they were CD only (I think) and so much of this stuff passes by without being heard, or at least it does me anyway, might be new to you. The are just plain soul tracks, I will drop you a PM and if you havent heard them will let you hear them some time next week.

Next years Prestatyn not that far away and those mixing lessons you are taking can only be beneficial.

I always think of garage as the stuff from the states on nervous new york, strictly rhythm etc etc but saomehow the description changed and it took on a whole new meaning. Not at all what it used to be IMO.

(Check out his recording of 'Father' Don't think he's with Su Su anymore. I think they split????? I got in touch with him via MySpace..really nice guy. Got loads of his records... he has an amazing voice and range. When you hear him come down an octave he's still with it.

how tragic that the scene these records were made for/on has petered out to a few specialist nights, partly because people got ripped off for too long at dance clubs with over-pricing and other reasons, partly because rock music is fashionable again instead with the younger generation - and in the UK, partly because the UK soul scene actively discouraged and slagged off these very records at the time, in person and in print, as 'that's not soul music' 1000 or so extra sales of 'father' at the time would have made a big difference to soundmen-on-wax still being in the business of releasing more great records by the Bobiens. Now it's all too late and the only ones who might benefit are the second hand record dealers.

at least it's finally accepted that Kenny is soulful!

Got everything Kenny Bobien has released just about the best vocalist on the Soulful House seen followed by all the artists named in this thread. Arnold jarvis has an amazing soulful voice but Kenny has that certain something when he belts it out. Magic. British wise Noel Mckoy takes some beating?

I'm sure you all know this already, but the terms 'Garage' and 'House' stem from the names of the clubs where they're styles were supposedly first played, 'Garage' from 'Paradise Garage' and 'House' from the New York wareHOUSE'

One club played deeper more soulfull house than the other, hence the different terms for each style to differenciate which was which, a bit like Northern, Southern and Newies. Unfortunately we need prefixes to explain, without actually explaining what style we are refering to.

When I opened my first record shop in Leeds in 1988, customers could come in and ask for 'House' or 'Garage', and we'd instantly know what they wanted. But then all of the pigeon holes sprang up and we had to virtually have a f**king questionaire for them to fill in so that we knew what they wanted.

I like some House music but could do without the Christian lyrics in a lot of the tracks to be honest. However, that said the Quality of the vocals is amazing.

'Solid Ground' is one beautiful slice of Inspirational Modern Soul- no contest

also it's an early DJ Spen production- the soulful sound of Baltimore and then some...

I always thought the Loft was a private gig more like a party rather than a fully fledged club, I think you had to be invited to get in? The Shelter was another big influence on the early days of the House seen in the USA & then the world. But Paradise Garage came first which is where the term 'Garage music' first came from. I agree the influence it had was short lived as the other two gatherings took the sound & style and pushed it but ultimately none of it would have happened without the Paradise Garage splitting away from the Chicago sound and leading the way. As far as the 'Soulful House' tag goes in relation to todays output in my opinion it relates to a certian vibe rather than just a vocal leaning. There are many instrumental releases that ooze the same Soulful feel to them but they can't be tagged 'Vocal house' for obvious reasons. Soulful House is it's own animal and has a specific feel and attitude 'Vocal house' can mean anything from Funky House to Trance to Happy Hardcore.

The Soulful bit is important because most people assume House music to be as hard as nails. Back in the day the term 'Garage' came from the music played at the Paradise Garage club in new York. Which was vocal led & mostly came out of New Jersey. The term 'House' music came out of the Warehouse in Chicago which lent more towards instrumental tougher edged stuff. When the uk scene stole the 'Garage' term it made sense to lable the vocal led house trax with 'Soulful' then atleast punters would know what they we're going to get from a certain night or event. The two areas are definetly different and warrent the different tags. IMHO.

Yes and I remember Tont Hayzer doing what he called a "Soulful house" show when he followed me on Soul 24-7 Friday nights. That was a few years ago now.

If only I didn't have to get the bus back to Liverpool St, to get me last train home, I could have listened more

how tragic that the scene these records were made for/on has petered out to a few specialist nights, partly because in the UK, partly because the UK soul scene actively discouraged and slagged off these very records at the time, in person and in print, as 'that's not soul music' 1000 or so extra sales of 'father' at the time would have made a big difference to soundmen-on-wax still being in the business of releasing more great records by the Bobiens. Now it's all too late and the only ones who might benefit are the second hand record dealers.

Cor blimey Paul - exactly the same feeling with 70/80s soul. Know plenty who up until 3 years ago sat round at gigs "tutting" and "scoffing" when played, who now ask me if I have any for sale or "want to let go" of any.

Guess that's all part of life's rich tapestry.
