Jumpinjoan
OK lets examine this: The records played by Godfather of Northern Soul Russ Winstanley included the Snake and Frank Wilson so "no longer has good taste in music" tick ! He was wearing what he was wearing so "isn;t a good dresser" tick ! He was doing random kicks and backdrops and did not appear to be dancing at all so "is a bad dancer" tick! One you missed out so "no longer has any credibility" tick tick tick !!! Come on stowtime... you can't be saying what we witnessed last night was credible? Jeez... even a mother would find it hard to be proud of that one Link to comment Social source share

Steve G
I hope Steve you have more than a passing resemblance to Sean Bean or that could rebound rather nastily. Still, it will earn me enormous Brownie points with my wife when I show her that compared to some I've made significant progress to becoming a model "new man". Let's just hope that nobody brings this to the ATTENTION of the FEMALE CONTRIBUTORS to this thread. ROD Hey Rod some of my best friends are chubby 50 somethings , but they don't wear those god awful sweatbands - which are just gross - and that was the point. Everyone knows that I am politically correct I also suffer from an occasional expanding wasteline meself . Anyway I am still not totally upset about this clowning about pastiche on POG - I see it as kind of an update of something the Goodies might have done 30 years ago. And my parents haven't yet rung up to ask me if I saw it either! Link to comment Social source share

Guest
I was laughing from behind the sofa with everybody else but some people have been a bit nasty I thought. I agree Reg some very snide remarks indeed. From the usual suspects. I'm not sure it's possible to portray the scene well on tv. Taken out of it's proper environment the dancing looks bizzare, and mostly the music don't sound too good. Ultimately on a day when i've just read a post informing us that a soulie has lost a son none of this really matters at all. Yeah, I guess some have been a bit over zealous. I suppose that may be down to some people expecting more from Liam. But that's other people's look out, and certainly not Liam's problem. At the end of the day it would appear having his five minutes of fame was far more important to Liam than what anybody on here thinks of him. Wouldn't do for me though... no way no how. But that's me. Link to comment Social source share

spot
Knew this would start a whoop arse storm, so here goes; Bloody hell Paul Degrading must have been a regular, didn't he say "Justin Winstanley"? Well he was just in his same 1973 Polo shirt & Farah slacks with the waist let out & apiece inserted, no doubt. Thanks to the 3 Amigo's & Pan's People of Soul you can expect a similar rush as back in 74-75 & look what that did?? We only went for the Music, yeh, my arse!!!!! Northern Soul dance lessons & high kick, "If I did that my kidney would fall out", well here's hoping Paul!! What an advert for our scene, a good 20 minutes of piss taking by a Scouser, well I can get that at any venue & I don't have to pay a license fee for it.There will be another 1000+ people you know who suddenly spent their youth at the Casino but never actually went. MY GOD I'll have to hang my head in shame & hide my face, venturing out only under the cover of darkness. "GET THEE BEHIND ME SATAN" or as Nan on Catherine Tate would say, "WHAT A F***KING LIBERTY". Take care,be safe & remember,"We all get 15 minutes of fame", Spot. Link to comment Social source share
Guest Simon
So to sum it all up this thread pretty much falls into two camps: One group of people who thinks the programme is just a bit of harmless fun & that the soul police/chinstrokers are all too precious & should lighten up a bit & one group of people who care passionately, are interested in credibility, suss, principles, respect & the long term view of what Northern Soul presents, i'm fairly sure i know which camp i'm proud to be in. Iancsloft
In the aftermath of the show after having a good laugh and more than a bit of cringing personally i think what most of us are worried about is the general public seein us Northern Soul lovers as vest wearing twirly skirt wearing soulies living in the past which we all know for the majority of us is,nt true .Yesterday was a TV Show trying to show the public what the 70,s was like at Wigan Casino Niters it involved asking the girls to dress up aka 70,s style and Paul O, Grady as a celeb presenter got in the swing of things as he saw fit 1973 tank top style he he with his bags and alniter bag trying to recreate the style of dress at the Casino .Regarding Russ Winstanley well theres no getting away from the fact he was the driving force along with Mr Marshall the owner and Mr Walker the Cas manager in getting the niter up n running in the first place and Russ well he had the say who DJ,D in the Casino and he made the right choices most of the time as the attendances throughout the 70,s proved in fact many of the 45,s spun at Wigan especally around 79 /81 are still considered classic rare dancers today Magnetics / Ray Agee ect ect ect so who can blame Russ for making a living these past 30 odd years on the back of one of the Worlds greatest Clubs its his job its one of the ways he makes a living to pay the bills like i make a living within the youth justice system good luck to him , a lot of us on here have moved on musicwise since the days of Wigan Cas we have discovered many many truely magnificent recordings with the help of soulies like Ady Crosdal, Rob Thomas Andy Dyson Tim Brown n M.Koppell Butch, Ian Levine n C. Curtis John Manship Soul Sam Richard Searling Rob Marriot Gary Spencer Guy Hennigan, Dave Flynn & the Capital Soul Club djs, Mick H Mark Bicknall Roger Banks my good friend rip Pete Lawson ect and many many more soulies who never get the credit they deserve for bringing new 60,s 70,s 80,s soul music to us.. Has for Sandy Holt well hes a great guy with a genuine love of Northern Soul Music just like me and everyone else whos posted on this topic he,s on these progs because of his love of the music and his dancing skills which aint bad for a guy his age Liam & Co young Soulies trying to recreate the dancing skills of yesteryear and Liam well hes got some great moves you cant deny that !!! All in All it was just a show about what went on in the past it really was nothing like that thats for sure i went to nearly all the niters at Wigan and believe me you cant fit into a tv prog what it was really like nothing can recreate the past at Wigan Casino you had to live in those times to know what it was all about the Music the Friendship the Gear ect ect Happy Days.. But most of us have moved on thank god and soulies like me and many more have a lot to be thankful to the Black youngsters of 60,S America for bringing us such a Wonderful Wonderful Music which without there would,nt have been a Northern Soul Scene never mind a Wigan Casino DONT KEEP THE FAITH..SPREAD IT !!!
