Guest Byrney Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 The more I think about this the funnier it becomes, it has no relationship whatsoever to anything I've ever been into Another question, does anyone from the nostalgia side of the Northern Scene have a view on this, did this portray your scene in the correct way? Not being snide just really interested.
Guest Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 I can't believe there was a woman on telly wearing sweatbands for real.... If you must wear such items of clothing, then you really should have a false mustache too BTW I'm still dying inside with embarrassment. I never tell anyone I'm into Northern as they don't believe me when I say its nothing like the shite thats portrayed in the media.
Guest andrew bin Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 i think the paul o grady show should be taken off the OVO list
Jumpinjoan Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 joan, get back in the kitchen ....how ya do'in............how good was saturday.....they wouldn't put that on the telly lol  I'm really good thanks Terry. Saturday? All seems a hundred million miles away from what we've just witnessed! Still, there's no denying it now... not now we've heard it from that guy's sister that it is in fact a film about Wigan Casino
Guest Mart B Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 Slightly embarrassed my two sons watched, they said dad i thought you said northern soul was cool .

Well byrney..I went once in 1974 and left to start me oon bakery business and around 2004 when i realised my life was and had been fookin shite, someone said "what aboot that prestatyn thingy, yow can dress oop and dance aboot like yar were 16 again and still wear the same clothes" and i thought this is just what i need, and it's cheaper than a Harley Davidson or an MG. OOOOHHHH Paul O'Grady and Russ Winstanley do the Hucklebuck...I think i'm in soul heaven...
Guest littlemissoul Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 Did anyone on here actually listen to what was being said while they were sat on the couch talking if not I will tell you they spoke about the atmosphere at the casino the friendship and the reason so many people went and kept on going it was the music and nothing but the music No no mention was made of the soul nights and all nighters of today that was not what the show was about. The things they did talk about were true not some bull that they thought people wanted to hear they spoke about the age of the people there about having to creep out to get there and lying to your parents about where you were that night the love of the music and how it still affects them and if you think that is a load of crap then you don't belong on the scene anyway. It would not of mattered what they danced to or how they danced someone on here would have had a load of garbage to say about it. I know a lot of people who dress in a certain way to go out souling if that is there thing why give them grief for it. One day there will be a post on this site that only has positive things to say was that a pig I saw flying. Dawn xXx

Not being snide just really interested. I'm also interested but are those people on this forum? What throws me is why a "soulie" has a pink punk haircut. Also back in the day it was unheard of to have the word Northern on patchs, clothing etc. When did it become acceptable to have stickers in the back of cars saying "Northern Soul - A Way of Life". IMHO that was and still is the sign of a div, which brings me back to our pink haired chum's T Shirt !
Tabs Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 No, the media always get it wrong. What I was objecting too was the distortion of the facts, again. Another example of how the scene is, don't you mean? Let's be honest, that was a fair reflection of 80% of the soul nights every weekend. It's a nostalgia scene for the majority. I don't understand why everyone is getting so uptight about this programme, what did you expect? It's a frivolous, teatime light entertainment show, not a documentary. Do you really think the show's audience care if Winstanley exaggerates a bit, or that they want to know about the way a minority of the scene has evolved into the small upfront nights that a few hundred anoraks attend today? It's not life and death!

Guest Scarborosoul Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 Not posted for a while as ie been very ill but having seen POG tonight ive really got to say what was said about the Casino was largely true it was a shytehole but the atmosphere etc had to be felt to be understood. as for those who didnt go that was how things were, daft clothes etc etc shit i remember dancing on Ms balcony in polys, shorts and a fecking string vest!! but who cared? we were to "off our heads" dancing to WKF Green door or Paint if -Fin Black. As ive said before they were our times and those who did the Casino will always have great memories, butwhy the FCUK cant WinF-instanly just Feck off? I still love the scene, I still love the oldies but i love the music full stop, be it "Northern" "Rare" or R&B as for Sandy Holt to quote SHOWTIME f*** telling him hes a div!!! he wasnt world champion kickboxer for f*** all!!! Him and Neil Greenwood where a pair of mad bastards then so what about now?? (LOL) Tony glad yr out of hospital m8. RICK

Guest Karen Heath Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 I thought it was hilarious-I was squealing with embarrassment/delight! It really doesn't have any bearing on anything-it doesn't matter-it was merely a pastiche.

The three people on Paul O'Grady were an embarassment to themselves and those of us who were Wigan regulars but recognise that it was three decades ago
Guest Angela Lawrence Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 Oh come on! Russ has had the pee taken out of him for ages now. This mickey take is his retaliation sureley? How will we explain to our really cool children neices and nephewstthat this is the way we spend the weekend? The funniest thing I have seen in ages!

Guest Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 Yes harmless fun and the best foooking laugh i have had for a while... Hid behind the door and turned the sound up, just like you do with them horror films when you were a kid... You can't have expected anything else on that silly cun'ts show... It fills the gap after Deal Or No Deal and before the Simpsons... It won't change anything, its just a bit of fun and a big up for the Casino circus Exactley !! My missus was in the kitchin cooking the lad his tea and she heard me laughing ! and then a "Aw feck off ! "Whats up" she shouts ? "Nothing Love, just the Paul o grady show again"
Iancsloft Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 You lot want to get a grip as the show is aimed at bored housewife's For Foook sake what did you expect ================================================================= I expected Russ to sing Karoke to the Snake and Sandy Holt to jump up and kick Pauls wig off thats not askin much is it Never mind bored housewifes what about bored owd souls BlackAdder does Wiggin Cas watch this space........................
Ian Dewhirst Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 (edited) The media has never portayed all the sides of Northern Soul properly in my opinion and the Paul O'Grady Show was no exception. There's always been many sides to the scene but it always tends to be the more obvious caricatures which get the media's attention. The Northern Soul scene I was on back in the early 70's was certainly a hell of a lot cooler than I've ever seen portayed by any of the media in the last 35 years. I don't think I ever seen a single TV slot which has ever caught the scene properly - certainly not the parts I witnessed back then. The media certainly never seemed to concentrate on some of the more fashionable sides of the scene or some of the more interesting stories behind the characters or music of the time. Just like any other scene, there were many sides to the Nothern scene of the early 70's - a big melting pot of different people from well-educated intellectuals to drug-frazzled freaks. I always felt that it would be nice if all sides of the story could be covered. If it's any consolation, I felt EXACTLY the same when "Footsee" was performed on Top Of The Pops in January 1975 and I had to spend the next few years trying to explain to people that Northern Soul wasn't about records like bloody "Footsee" and people doing somersaults every two minutes LOL. I just had the self same conversation with my 14 year old daughter and ended-up having to pull some photos and books out to show her what we really looked like! Annoying but what can you do? Also, Paul O'Grady's show is really a bit of light entertainment 'fluff' for the family teatime viewers, so don't take it too seriously. I certainly didn't. Sharon Cooper Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 thank god i never told anybody at work about THAT CRAP PROGRAMME....... lets never mention it again ..keep saying the programme never happend over and over again........................................................................... ......................... it must be working because i have forgotten what i am doing on here Should have known better after KEVH mentioned how bad the programme was last week, Back in the late 70s Sharon & I returned home from work and while having dinner watched a news magazine progamme, think it was Midlands Today. They had an item about the revival of the Teddy Boy scene. There they sat in their drapes with their brillcreamed hair and flowing skirts etc, I have never forgotten that article and still remember them talking about young people getting into it. Thought then how stupid they all looked and now it's our turn. Don't mind people sitting and taking about the scene with their baggies etc on because it relates to their youth have a real problem though with the thought that todays youth want to go round looking like it.
Iancsloft Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 or that they want to know about the way a minority of the scene has evolved into the small upfront nights that a few hundred anoraks attend today? It's not life and death! ======================================================================== Tell u what if it was,nt for your so called few hundred anoraks the scene would,nt be what it is today all the soul nites all over the country and behond is because after Wigan Cas shut its doors and thousands drifted away from Northern Soul your anoraks kept the scene going via Stafford.. Parr Hall. Saints Club Leigh Miners / Legion.. Earlstown Irish Club ect ect from these nites soulies started coming back to hear the music then started to open up there own nites resulting in a big revival of Northern from the 90,s onwards... THIS IS SOUL..REMEMBER BUT FOR BLACK AMERICAN SOUL MUSIC WE WOULD NEVER HAVE MET SO MANY NICE PEOPLE, BECAME VERY GOOD FRIENDS WITH SO MANY OR HAD OUR LIFES FULFILLED BY A TYPE OF MUSIC WHICH FOR MANY OF US IS NOT A HOBBY BUT A WAY OF LIFE... DONT KEEP THE FAITH... SPREAD IT !!! LOVE..PEACE & HAPPINESS XX ANORAK IAN CUNLIFFE
Barry Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 A perfect SS thread to POG's reminiscences. It could not have been done in any other manner than the manner within which it was done, surely you must be able to see that? If you were embarrassed by it, then you're not cut of the right cloth yet, if you felt that you were being portrayed as uncool, then you probably are. I actually think it was quite a ground-breaking piece given the studio audience, demographic etc. Me Mam text me, as she had to put up with my addled state after Wigan - and she loved it. Which surely, was the point.
Sharon Cooper Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 I switched on to watch The Simpsons , and pardon me for this - WHAT THE F**K I HAVE I JUST WITNESSED ? ....... I shouted Lady B in to watch what was going on , and all she did was shake her head , and chuckled when PO'G informed us that Dustin Stanley was the Godfather of Northern Soul ......... I am sorry - and no disrespect to the dancers - but I am ashamed of what I saw , and I am afraid that the scene has suffered a big loss of credibility because of this .......... Malc Burton Malc and everybody else who doesn't know, the dancers you saw tonight are the 'northern' dancers on the Souled Out film
Guest littlemissoul Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 No TV show or film would be able to show Northern Soul in all it's true colours because it means so many different things to so many people you would not be able to get the true essence of soul onto film. No matter how it was portrayed to a few people it would be wrong because it is not how they see it or feel it and that is the main problem, we all see it as something different. Soul is a feeling and that is something that can not be shown the passion can not be caught on camera no matter how good the actor. So lets all be mates again and stop ribbing people for doing what felt right to them. If the world was full of peps who all felt and thought the same imagine having to stand outside the same venue as everyone else begging to be let in to have just a minute on the dance floor we would all be much sadder people than we are now. Love you all you make my life brighter but without the music life would be a darker place xXx

Guest gibber Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 MY mum text the wife .they both thought it was the funniest thing he has done so far . the kids thought the show was trying to be retro like life on mars . I just cried into my Shepard's pie .

Well said Keith, I`m sick of our scene being portrayed as a freak show. I`d love to see a show to reflect how it really is for thousands of "Normal folk" who have a passion for soul music day in day out...not just getting into fancy dress every other weekend. Its got to the point that when people say to me "You are into that northern soul aren`t you"? My reply is an embarresed "Well kind of....but not like you might think" When really i should be proud to be a follower of the best music in the world. Chris

Glad to see the younger generation keeping the Wigan flag flying................

Modernsoulsucks Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 (edited) It was never gonna be an in-depth look at Northern on the POG show, was it? Why this feigned shock, horror, hostility from the usual suspects. I can read more inane drivel in the Events section from the cognoscenti than I heard from Sandy and the two ladies tonight. Sorry, but the dancers were in the main a bit naff, although Andantes did them no favours. ROD Edited October 14, 2008 by modernsoulsucks
