grouse Posted October 18, 2008 Posted October 18, 2008 Just seen this thanks to Youtube. To be honest I didn't think it was too bad, I was expecting it to be a right piss-take after reading some of the comments on here. If POG really did go to the casino, and I've no reason to believe he didn't, he could have done some real damage by mentioning some of the additives that went with the cups of tea. He didn't, but must have been well aware of them. All he spoke about was the music, the friendship and the fashion of the time, even his dancing wasn't as bad as some I've seen. All in all I think the scene got off lightly, It could have been much worse. Now when's that film coming out?..........................

Wiganer1 Posted October 18, 2008 Posted October 18, 2008 Hi all Just to make you all aware of what my stand is on this topic POG is a comedian so we were aware that this was not going to be a serious look into Northern Soul it was meant to be a comical look back at Pauls past and Wigan was a part of his past. This was not something I went looking for they came to me I received a phone call asking me if I was prepared to appear on his show. I went in with my eyes completely open so believe me no one made an idiot out of me I was paid for my time I lost no money paid out for nothing myself I had a great day and was looked after real well was given some great food and was kept supplied with drinks all day I met some real interesting people and believe me I enjoyed myself. I personally don't think it was done to take the pee out of anyone apart from POG. I was treated with respect by all I met all day long. If some of you disagree with what I did well that is up to you but come up to me when you see me at a soul night and let me know in person not hide behind a keyboard and computer. If what you want is someone to make a show about the soul scene today do something about it instead of moaning about what is being done. =========== hey sammy great to see you on the TV mate... loads of people telling me at work theyd seen the prorgam and thought it was great to see it on TV regards mark freeman (nuneaton)

There's no such thing as a 'Soul police', it's just the sort of statement that certain people trot out when they are jealous of the high standards others have regards music, principles, suss etc. Because some on here refuse to dumb themselves down to certain people's low standards they get tagged as 'Soul Police', if having high standards, credibilty, respect & cool means being tagged as a member of the 'Soul police' then i'll happily wear that badge. Simon In fairness Simon, there's plenty of labels bandied about, 'Soul Police', 'Chinstokers', 'Oldies/baggies brigade', 'Divs' etc. I'm sure there's a potential patch for every type of person on the soul scene.
Guest BintofSoul Posted October 18, 2008 Posted October 18, 2008 I've only seen the youtube extracts of the show but what I have seen seems to be about a group of people reminiscing about a certain time in their lives. The proggie reflects their subjective experience about their time at Wigan Casino. I must have missed something because I'm unclear about how this could upset or offend anyone .
Baz Atkinson Posted October 18, 2008 Posted October 18, 2008 (edited) speechless having just watched that, but there again over the duration of a 30 year period i went to the casino from 78-81 and i am pleased to say the other 27 years have been wonderful.staffs,shotts,mexboro,100 club, lifeline, dda ,wlton etc etc we all have so much to look forward to discovering tune after tune, so bollocks to that show it was absolute complete and utter load of shite! Having watched the docu film about Joy Divison if your gonna document it,then take some serious people and do it, dont reduce it to that, there are so many good people involved who could tell the real story,ie losing friends, the gear, the politics, the egos, the fights, the fucking sheer seediness of it all.Of course we all can emphasise with it so why not tell it how it really was,for every good momment there was bad momments also.I would love to see a good solid objective account of those days instead of romantic snippes of people in the media who were on the fringes for a small time in their lives and glorify a wonderful but potential cruel place. I once went into mr ms at 15 years old and lads were fixing up,but ahhh the music, ahh the friendship, ahhh the atmosphere, ahh young dancers, not laughed so much since the black CLove episode ,now thats another story. Guest frenchie Posted October 19, 2008 Posted October 19, 2008 Well I have to admit I watched this RIDICULOUS take on Wigan memories, and may I be the last post on this, and please let it RIP. We all have our memories of Wigan and they are great and will never leave us , but do not try and live continually in the past, it was in the 1970's and that is were it should stay. I have never laughed so much and cringed at the same time. I did the the Dr Who thing behind the settee when my daughter nearly wet herself. WHY OH WHY! Long live Burnley and similar class establishments. Paul Ogrady certainly did the "scene" no favours but as many people have said light hearted tv at our expense me thinks!!

Don't mean to be nasty but I was thinking along similar lines. Don't know how old you are Simon but if like most of us it's late 40's/early 50's, is wanting to be 'cool' at that age any less tragic than wanting to wear 70's clothing & reminisce about times past ?
Guest Bogue Posted October 19, 2008 Posted October 19, 2008 (edited) Was just thinking... Sure Paul O'Grady sometimes revisits topics he has on the show, especialy if there has been bad press. (not that I watch it mind, so I wouldn't know for certain ) So there could be an even more intresting thread started if he gets wind of this & gives some of us the benifit of his sharp tongue ! ....................... Actualy that sentence sounds rather more worrying than I meant it now I have read it back Could still be time for a quick edit if that alarms anyone & on that Bombshell.......I'm off to bed Edited October 19, 2008 by Bogue

wolfie66 Posted October 19, 2008 Posted October 19, 2008 Personally I couldn't give a flying f*ck what a load of blue-rinse pernsioners or oh so ironic students think of either Wigan Casino - I never went - or 'northern' soul - if I worried what the sheep thought of me I'd never have been a mod, would never have been into scooters, and would certainly not be into rare soul. Which means if I gave a toss about the herd I would never have had the absolutely cracking adult life I think I have - great mates for 30 odd years, absolutely fantastic nights with them - and some absolutely sh*te ones which we all take the p*ss out of now - and last, but by no means least, the music, 'our' music. It was Paul O'Grady ffs not Newsnight. Personally I've never really considered myself or the scene 'cool' (see above ) just having a crack with like-minded peops who love the same things as me, so that effeminate herbert and the rest of the media divvies shafting the new 'thing' - all right, raping it and leaving it bleeeding in the hedge - is like water off a duck's back. I had a crack the next day with the lads at work in fact, some good British banter with Rock fans and a pretty, waxed & shaven 'new man' who listens to this poxy new Indie row where every new band is the next greatest thing - oh, and Lily Allen/Kate what'shername? Music is relative and music is subjective, but let's face it, we're right and they listen to sh*te! f*** 'em but let 'em be, and take that Paul O'Grady abortion of a programme for what it was - div tv Now if you'll excuse me I've got to sew a couple of Wigan patches on my vest.............

You were a post-Quadrophenia Mod Revivalist -bit like the 70's Teddy Boys and the exact opposite of the Mod ethos. Guest Trevski Posted October 19, 2008 Posted October 19, 2008 Never mind, on next weeks Jeremy Kyle show there is a story about 4 teenage kids who are embarrassed by their parent's entitled "Our Mum and Dad dress like clowns!" Featuring a chav family kids dressed in hoodies 'dissin' their circle-skirt & baggie wearing parents! Should be good for a laugh!
Guest Posted October 19, 2008 Posted October 19, 2008 Why was he never a mod? Because he was born too late? Only partly. I can best explain it as attitude. Original mods did care about cool. The mod revivalists copied the (15 years out of date) clothes and nasty aggressive attitudes they saw in the film. I still wince at the memory of a Manchester to Wigan train one Saturday night and in our carriage was a group of teenagers in Pork Pie hats giving out attitude to all and sundry. Theres a bloody big difference between people who find the scene via the music and those who come via a fad. I think a lotof people who speak against "Souled Out" remember effect of Quadrophenia on the scene. I hope that goes some way to answering the question.
