After reading some of the personal attacks it was pleasent to read, in my opinion, such a reprresentative view which to me summed up what the show was, where the scene is, and an insight into just a handful of the people we have to thank for that.

I hadn't posted on this thread due to some of the posts getting a bit over zealous towards indicuduals. I think everyone is perfectly entitled to their opinions and as a participant in the show, i am more than prepared to accept whatever criticism comes my way in relation to the show, not personal towards the people involved.

When we were approached about the show (over 3 months ago), we were interviewed by their researcher about the scene nowadays, what we as the 'young blood' thought of it, how we got into it etc etc. Subsequent conversations with teh show led us to believe that we would be talking about those similar things, along with members of the scene who were older and their views on it.

It was only on the day (when down at the studios in London a few hours before the live show) we discovered what was actually going to happen.

As it turned out, the show centred around the wigan casino and didn't represent anything to do with the scene today, with no reference to format we were led to believe was going to happen.

We were put into wardrobe under 2hrs before the show and advised that we had to re-create the Casino of mid 70's, so our clothing we would normally wear didn't fit.

It probably sounds like i'm trying to justify going on the show here - i'm not, mainly because i dont feel i have to. It wasn't for the money (we didnt get paid much to be honest) or fame. there are many differing reasons between us as to why we did it. But one thing i do know is we had a great time, a great day spent with friends i've met through the sscene. The experience of that day was fantastic and only possible because of northern soul.

I've been listening to northern since i was about 12, and although my 13yrs of experience with northern soul is minute to many on this site, i feel i know enough about the scene to suss out that the show wasn't going to do it any harm (even at the point we realised it was going to be a nostalgia trip)

I've met the most amazing people through northern soul, and i love everything about it - great music, passion, diversity, great people.

If word of mouth from the show helps make more younger people aware of northern soul (as we'd first intended those initial 3 months ago) then great. If they come along to soul do's and love the music and everything that is captivating about this scene then even better. That way the music can be kept going for decades to come.

In hindsight, would i have not done the show? Well i certainly would've wanted to know exactly what it was going to be about, and knowing that, maybe not.

But i'll not hang my head in shame as some people have suggested. We did it, it's done and i don't think any harm was caused. Apologies to those who got a bit of extra ribbing at work, but lets be honest, doesn't that happen anyway, its banter.

Thanks to those who supported what we did, and to those who stuck up for us. To those who disagreed, you are entitled to your opinion and i respect you for it. To those who got a bit personal, "i'll see you when i git there" because i for one certainly won't llet your comments put me off going to soul do's and sharing the passion of soul music with like minded people.

I would like to apologise for my outburst on here the other day. I was a bit pissed and was just trying to stick up for my mates. Me and Paul Sadot have been messaging each other and its now sorted.

Anyway I'll be seeing the O'Grady boys tonight at Beat Boutique and believe you me i'll be giving them a jolly good ribbing......

HARDLY THE DOWNFALL OF THE NORTHERN SCENE ITS WITHSTOOD MUCH WORSE AND IT'S STILL GOING STRONG... DO WE REALLY GIVE A FLYING F**K WHAT PEOPLE THINK OF US.. WE KNOW HOW THINGS ARE TODAY MOST OF US HAVE MOVED ON AND ARE ENJOYIN THE MUSIC FAR MORE THAN WE DID 30 YEARS AGO... SOUL REMIT MY ARSE... IF WE'RE HONEST MOST OF US ARE JUST GLAD TO STILL BE ABLE TO GET OUT TO VENUES TO DANCE AND HEAR THE ODD TUNE WE'VE NEVER HEARD BEFORE OR FOR A WHILE ANYWAY, IT DOES'NT MEAN WE LOVE THE SCENE LESS JUST BECAUSE SOME OF US DONT GIVE A KIPPERS DICK IF SOME YOUNG PEOPLE WANNA MAKE A FEW QUID OUT OF IT... THOSE DAYS ARE OVER SO WE BETTER GET OVER OURSELVES... KEEP DANCIN AND YES DARE I SAY KEEP THE FAITH BUT FOOK WHAT OTHER PEOPLE DO.... TO THY OWN SELF BE TRUE. Been having a titter at this thread, hadn't seen the program till I looked at the links on here....god don't some of us take it all seriously.

I guess i'm used to the banter as my hardcore circle of friends were never into the music anyhow so I was always getting the p*** ripped into me about my pastime, even at my wedding my best man couldn't resist jibes about dancing alone like 'Dumbo on ice' :D

My take on the show ?Most of this has already been said but : Not brilliant & did no favors as such but it was as i would have expected it to appear on the POG show. He treats every subject with the same sense of humor & you either like it or you don't, but from what i have seen of his show he's consistent & it wasn't just 'getting at' NS.

In fact if you have a good listen to the first part he reiterates on several occasions his love of the music & that there is no way you could ever get over how good it felt, & the joking was really just about the fashions of the time.

And lets be honest, he was a bit kinder about that than some of the flak thrown on here at the people who 'still' like to wear it !

I thought everything that Sandy bloke said was fine & he really put it across well. huh.gif Why did someone on here have to have a go at his hairstyle ? Thought that was one of the good things i could remember, that the scene accepted all sorts & no one was discriminated ?

On to the young guys, they did no harm, all it did was give the granny's in the audience something to whoop & marvel at.

Don't think it will have had much effect in bringing new youngsters to the music as there wouldn't have been any watching....... Only those forced by their parents on here :P

But keep on doing what you are doing guys  then maybe one day the general public will get to hear the real NS & then see what it 'is' all about..........Perhaps be a bit more wary of the media though, they are not all your friends :D

Hi all

Just to make you all aware of what my stand is on this topic POG is a

comedian so we were aware that this was not going to be a serious look into

Northern Soul it was meant to be a comical look back at Pauls past and

Wigan was a part of his past. This was not something I went looking for

they came to me I received a phone call asking me if I was prepared to

appear on his show. I went in with my eyes completely open so believe me

no one made an idiot out of me I was paid for my time I lost no money paid

out for nothing myself I had a great day and was looked after real well was

given some great food and was kept supplied with drinks all day I met some

real interesting people and believe me I enjoyed myself. I personally

don't think it was done to take the pee out of anyone apart from POG. I

was treated with respect by all I met all day long. If some of you

disagree with what I did well that is up to you but come up to me when you

see me at a soul night and let me know in person not hide behind a keyboard

and computer. If what you want is someone to make a show about the soul

scene today do something about it instead of moaning about what is being

done.

Nice one. :P

And as I said before if my post offended I apologise 100%. I still hated it tho

Hi Sammy,

I don't think anyone's hiding behind a computer & i don't mean that in an aggressive way but this is a forum & we're all entitled to our opinions, granted though it may have got a bit personal from certain quarters.

I'm glad that you enjoyed the day but i still stick to the viewpoint that this harms the image of Northern Soul, i do think you made yourselves look a bit silly but if that doesn't bother you then there's no problem.

I don't think you have anything to worry about as it was the POG show.

However should it ever appear on the stage at Glastonbury or similar festival then that I think would be the right time to bid it farewell.

That took me to this site https://www.northernsoulsister.co.uk/database/?c=soulbrother which not only let me know that Spencers are still making bags to the original pattern but that I could be the proud owner of a "Northern Soul - Keep the Faith" bar towel for a mere £5 but £1.50 p + p

Joking apart I've always worn traditionaly styled leather shoes since the 70's and they do have a nice looking pair for sale, I think I'll pass on the Fred Perry shirt and Harrington jacket though rolleyes.gif:thumbup:

Cheap tat. It cost me more than that in the 70's to get a pair tailor-made

As for the shoes... Might as well strap a duckbilled platypus to your foot! laugh.gif

As for the show, I found it hilarious! Bore no resemblance to anything I know as Northern Soul, but then again, I never thought it would.

I'm also interested but are those people on this forum? What throws me is why a "soulie" has a pink punk haircut. Also back in the day it was unheard of to have the word Northern on patchs, clothing etc. When did it become acceptable to have stickers in the back of cars saying "Northern Soul - A Way of Life". IMHO that was and still is the sign of a div, which brings me back to our pink haired chum's T Shirt !

That soulie as you call him is sandy holt, casino dance champion, which was over 30 years ago, sandy will always have love for the scene, whats the colour of his hair got to do with it, and also he is still a great dancer , and a champion kick boxer, so never judge a book by its cover.

As for the program the best bit was pog talking to sandy and the girls, as someone said in a past post, i was about the music, the friendship, there was and will never be another place like it for me, but that was in my era 1976 a 15 year old teenager. I remember the slightly older crowd at wigan, the crowds from the torch, mecca and various other places looking at the younger people on the scene and commenting f.....g kids cant dance, been on the scene 5 minutes think they know it all, and the music at wigan in the 70s was crap, not for me it was`nt i was 14/15 it was all new to me i f.....g loved it, still do always will, but guess what its come full circle, i was starting to say the same thing about the young ones to day, cant dance, whats this record its crap, i know some people get pissed off with the scene, no one more so than me some times, but just enjoy it while you can, and lets all enjoy it together just like it has always been.

My thoughts exactly

A ten min slot on a tea time show with some decent chat at the start then it finished up with a comical car crash type dance off style cheese fest

It will probably keep people away more than attract them smile.gif

WELL WELL WELL

Thanks for that you have probably just got some older soulies shaking their heads and saying THIS IS WHY WE DON'T WANT THE YOUNGER GENERATION ON THE SOUL SCENE. You may think from reading this topic that there is a lot of aggresive YOBS on the scene but it has never been like that we are a very friendly bunch always a hug and a kiss when we meet the same when we have to put on our coats and leave our extended family at the end of a great night of dancing great music and fantastic people. Yes people get a bit vocal on here that is what it is for but none of their posts gave the impression they were going to kick a persons head in because they didnt agree (yours did) Please note though that by what should of been the end of this thread people had calmed down and were back to their friendly selves. How can you be so angry at a programme that you yourself did not watch ? How can you make any valid points if you did'nt see it I will still be proud to call the people on there my mates and it may bring some of the middle age on to the scene but you will find that they were there in the begining and only stopped to have kids (like myself and many on here) so I am sorry but shame shame shame on YOU. I have some real good friends on the scene who are about your age and very passionate about the music and the scene and I know they would not of put on a post like that and on none of my posts did I ask people to BACK DOWN or appologise as I believe everyone is entitled to their opinion they appologised because they knew that the people they were a bit nasty about are real nice peps. Sammy Dee especialy couldnt be nasty even if he tried real hard (I may be biased I know) So as I said before can we please get back to enjoying some great music having a good dance and spending time with like minded people. Let us also remember LIGHT ENTERTAINMENT KTF
