Garethx Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 C4 could have asked their own Phd in Media and Head of Programmes Nations and Regions to contribute. Indeed, but I don't think that SC would have provided the right calibre of stooge for Paul O'Grady's act and that's the point. Put Russ and the dancers into a five minute slot on Richard & Judy and the outcome may have been slightly different: still not a positive image for everybody perhaps, but not the apparently deeply offensive fiasco broadcast yesterday evening.
Paul-s Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 If you look closely Liam knocks POG over. Right on his arse. Just what he deserves if you ask me. 2 arses together! What really makes me smile, is how we just had a thread where people (stunt dancers!) were banging on about how it takes years to learn to dance to Northern Soul Thats obviously not the reply Liam gave to the POG show when they asked him to teach them...15 seconds of fame became 15 secs of shame for the young mercinary of soul....dread to think where the young guns (or is it puns!) will pop up next.... After the 'Duffy' video, they advertised their night with "featuring the dancers from the Duffy video". What now..."featuring the dancers from the Paul O'Grady show'. They certainly are a cool bunch of guys!

They had on their letterheads "as seen on BBC1" ! All publicity is good publicity ?
Lenny Harkins Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 Just watched the footage, thought it was pretty funny with some cringey bits. Not to be taken too serious I think, POG seemed to be genuinely into it...Whether it`s good or bad for the scene, just a bit of fun me thinks! totally agree with you andy , a bit of fun......dont know what all the fuss is about. o'grady's a funny geezer.
Coops Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 hands up who thought it was going to be anything less than tabloid t.v. aimed at the lowest form of intelect.... daytime viewing? and the cap seemed to fit mr. winstanley perfectly, all that was missing was a chuffing lap-top!
Guest Roddy Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 I THINK THE OLD GEEZER IN THE BLUE POLO SHIRT USED TO CALL THE BINGO NUMBERS AT WIGAN MECCA OR WAS IT BLACKPOOL RITZ OR PERHAPS THE WIGAN WHEEL I LIKED IT WHEN HE GOT THE NUMBERS WRONG LIKE LEGS ELEVEN THE THEME FROM jOE 90 . As i sit in the nursing home supping my cider from a straw i wonder did i dream all those wonderful nights playing speed bingo with me mates.... ah listen to those memories -the clickity click of those slots sliding over the numbers-thelights flashing those dulcict tones over the microphone one last night people only one more .... Ah f*** it more medication nurse ! all those memories are clogging up my tear ducts.
Guest gordon russell Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 == why is it russ's fault!! did russ ask Paul ogrady to do it - i dont think so who else were they going to ask to be linked with it? i took the programme for what it was a bit of nostalgia about the old days...also a bit of fun! is RUSS familiar with the word ........NO does he not know the phrase.....f**k off you must be joking.....or maybe sorry i'm washing my hair. If none of these folk went on there wouldn't have been a sketch.
Guest gordon russell Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 the thing about the POG clip is,yes it is a piece of tacky harmless fun to be laughed at.Yes it has nowt to do with the real scene, but it's the rest of the scene that has the piss taken out of em because these fools can't see any further than the end of their noses tezza
Guest mooma Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 Re the show "IF YA DIDNT LIKE IT you only had to turn the TV off!!! I thought it was a laugh and enjoy watching the show (sad but true!!) And as I always say "THERE WAS LIFE B$ BLOODY WIGAN"!!!!! sue

Guest Roddy Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 thanks Alan i couldnt remember if it was the Wigan wheel or the blackpool ritz, i spent so much time on wigan pier with me old mate George Orwell wasting my young socialist brain cells that the memories aint what they were but i do remember you losing your bowling shirt a few times. But what does it profit a man if he should lose all his shirts but gain a fez ?

After the 'Duffy' video, they advertised their night with "featuring the dancers from the Duffy video". What now..."featuring the dancers from the Paul O'Grady show'. They certainly are a cool bunch of guys!' As Gareth pointed out it is all relative. Some people might not think doing a musical about northern or being in northern soul pop promos is particularly cool either. The CH4 3 Min Wonder with Steve C in it was quite well put together imho as was the Moloko video (although set to one of the worst dirges in musical history). But this is because they were made by talented film-makers ect. Before you get annoyed i'm only speaking from the devil's advocate point of view, I think the POG thing was car crash tv as well. All i am saying is that it would seem very seldom if at all do we have worthwhile representation or input from the media, so why become embroiled with them in the first place? Crumb Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 not sure about that invited on the show and dress suitably...have you heard of the word "NO" thats all they had to say. You have to want to go on there dressed like that. as for kev s....these are just the type of venues he subscribes to,so l guess thats why he has no embarrasment ...T 2 friends of mine were invited to appear on the show but when they found out they were expected to wear "fancy dress" they emailed the producer & said they weren't happy about it, he emailed back to withdraw the invitation. Pity really as they were planning to use the opportunity to answer Jazzy B's coments of last year.
Guest Roddy Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 (edited) Alan i think you will find it was entitled the "shogun and the duck" it was a trilogy based around the japanese warlords and the esoteric dance and drugs culture that existed around the lochend and leith area around 1977-1982. George really was never the same after the spanish civil tapas war, he and i retired to wigan peir nursing home for bingo veterens and contemplated our navels until awakened by the brave pioneering work of rustyman stanlly the greatest bingo caller ever to pull on a pair of spencers. anyways my colostomy bag needs emptying and i need a nap ..... Guest Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 I'm sure that Liam will expect some light hearted ribbing when he comes out of hiding Sometime around next Christmas Christmas thats optimistic!!! I think maybe what they should do is hand themselves in to the soul police and everyone can meet in suitable open space and put them in the stocks..problem solved

Paul Jnr Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 Now hang on a bit here do you not think that this is all getting a bit personal and bitchy??? I understand that maybe what they have particpated donesn't fit in with the soul source/Northern soul rule book, but to be honest it's that huge its boring!!! At the end of the day they ain't harming anyone just having a bit of fun which is what you do before you become old and cynical Well Said Vic, but doesn't come as much as a shock on the Friendliest Scene in the world eh!!
Coops Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 it's taken a lot of people's minds off this impending depression that's already cost me my job and i'm sure many others will follow, the antics of a clown on ch4 will not cause me to lose any sleep, if people watching think that's what the northern scene is (freak show) then great, they won't be getting in my way with their beer glasses on the dance floor and as for the rest of us..... we know it's not ... "If you have to ask what jazz is (or see it on the POG show) you'll never know".

Simon
Paul R Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 On tonight's show.....Studio full of pigs and Alpaca Phase III. Contrast and compare. Must be a Mecca special tonight then . Paul

Simon So does it mean that because Liam has appeared on the Paul o' Grady show that he no longer has good taste in music, isn't a good dresser and is a bad dancer..., I think he just doesn't give a s**t, I certainly don't think he is letting himself down....again maybe he isn't following the soul remit
Guest Simon Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 Shame there were people on the programme who are old enough to know better True, then again i can see why Dusty Bin did it, he hasn't had that many television opportunities since 3-2-1 finished... Simon
Guest Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 Liam could charge a quid for each tomato thrown Don't forget it's set in 74 so only sliced tomato's could be allowed

Having said that, I've been asked on more than one occasion and the answer has always been - get fuc......... Agree 100% and it could also be argued that the younger dancers were in fact actors in an except showing the dancing in "Souled Out". By the way the reason that acrobatic dancing died out is because it's crap! In truth with the exception of spins it was always a minority taste.
SteveM Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 Now hang on a bit here do you not think that this is all getting a bit personal and bitchy??? I understand that maybe what they have particpated donesn't fit in with the soul source/Northern soul rule book, Bit of a tired cliche these days like the soul police jibes. Now we have the "credibility police" . People have opinions. Some have strong opinions. I thought myself that it was cringeworthy in virtually all respects and said so. I also feel that the people invoved, RW not withstanding as it does appear that he'd do anything to get himself/the Casino publicity after all these years, must have realised how cheesey and non representative of the scene it was going to be be. Which seems to be the main gripe. At the end of the day they ain't harming anyone just having a bit of fun which is what you do before you become old and cynical Read In Town Mikeys eloquent post again. Its stunts like this over the years that have made many cynical of the way this scene is treated by the mainstream. I do understand that its not the end of the world, but I guess that some just love it more than others. Debates like this will occur time and time again on here. Its an internet forum and as I've said people are entitled to their opinions.

He was wearing what he was wearing so "isn;t a good dresser" tick ! He was doing random kicks and backdrops and did not appear to be dancing at all so "is a bad dancer" tick! One you missed out so "no longer has any credibility" tick tick tick !!!
