Birder66 Posted October 7, 2008 Posted October 7, 2008 With very few exceptions, I always get rid of my UK issues if I manage to get a JA blank or label copy of a tune. I'm not a 'collector' - I just want to have the tune in its finest splendour, and that almost always means having the JA blank - full bass and treble! There must be something special about pressing 45s in the west indies, 'cos the JA cuts always leave the UK presses for dead. A great case in point is ALL MY LOVING. The UK FAB issue is so weak compared to a JA issue......and Dr Ring Ding is probably the worst example of a UK press sounding horribly wrong. So, for me, I almost nevr buy UK issues. Ha! are you serious? I just find that completely astonishing, not least because the sound quality is always worse (dependent upon condition, of course). Christ, I'll have to see what Uk's I've got for trade!! I would gladly get rid of all my UK's today. I consider the UK issue as completely useless, and simply a stop gap to getting the real thing. Anybody with unwanted JA 45s feel freee to list them, and I'll see if there's any I'm after. How can anbody prefer EL Bang Bang on a crummy red & white Island to a mint red Muzik City, for example????

To my mind, having a UK is a bit like having a tape recording of the real thing. If the first issue was the blank, then I'd much rather have that...the tune that was played in Jamaica. In any case, the JA labels are far more beautiful.
Guest Jean-Paul Posted January 26, 2009 Posted January 26, 2009 (edited) I too prefer original Jamaican pressings. I have some that a DJ friend of mine sold me when he had found UK copies. I would do the opposite! That said, I probably have more 45s on UK than JA as it's usually (not always) harder to find an original JA copy - and in decent condition too. Just been chatting about "On The Beach" on another thread which is a case in point. I still play the Dice copy out as my original JA copy is too mashed up. I have only once seen another JA original for sale and it was too expensive for me at the time. I have also seen a JA second press but didn't buy it as I had the Dice copy and wanted to wait for a JA first press. I love nice labels and label art, but for me sound quality is the most important consideration. I love Jamaican label designs even more than UK ones, so for me the most enjoyable format of all is probably the original Jamaican labelled copy: sounds AND looks nice! (assuming it's actually in decent condition!) UK Island and Blue Beat are great labels and look nice - but I would argue that Jamaican Treasure Isle, Studio One, etc. look even nicer. JP PS.
