Didn't he appear at Wigan? A friend of mine saw him somewhere around that time. Apparently though he was rather ill and sadly not at his best (he says.)

I saw him on 15th June 1975 at the Casino.

He suffered a massive heart attack on stage at the Latin Casino in Cherry Hiil, New Jersey whilst, apparently singing "Lonely Teardrops' and remained in a PVS until he died on 21st January 1984 aged 49 - a sad loss to soul music.

Awesome performance at the Casino even though he was 'ill' and didn't realize it.

Still remember vividly that it wasn't that busy when he came on stage as lots of people weren't into live acts.

Really strange as 30 odd years on I still love seeing live acts.

Just the memory of him back dropping to his classics still brings up the goosebumps.

A TRUE legend.

Still feel privileged to have seen a consummate artist, taken from us before his time, on one of his last live performances.

i was there at Wigan in 75, it was fantastic ohmy.gif even though we found out later he was really ill !!!

His voice was superb and although he didn't dance as much as he normally did it will stick with me forever.

Funny having just listened to his story on R2 in the last few weeks it seems certain he came to the UK as he was skint  and need a quick tour to pay for his gear and young girl problems (sounds just like me in them days :D )

Considering how much money he squandered back then on drugs/alcohol/women it is amazing he was still alive in the 70,s !!

I don't go and see many live acts anymore and believe me after JW there is NO point !!!!!!

Ian.

i saw him at The Rainbow, Finsbury Park sometime in the early 70's.

The place was only half full & i seem to remember everyone had to move to the front!!!

The band strolled on (guitar bass & drums only) & i thought at first they were the roadies.

Jackie came on & was able to do all his moves, smoke & sing looking the epitome of cool.

All in all an awsemome performance - don't know how it compares to his shows in the 60's though.

when you mention really ill was it drink and drugs taking their toll or heart troubles?

Jackie appeared at the Princess Club Chorlton Manchester (now a McDonalds). We went after the Pendulum had finished that night.Fantastic show from Reet Petite to Sweetest Feelin.

I saw Jackie Wilson twice, on a Wednesday night in Colwyn Bay on the pier, were I got his autograph then again on The Saturday at the Casino, section of the crowd gave him a hard time at both venues due to fact he didn't do his northern tracks, must admit I was disappointed he didn't do THE WHO WHO SONG (which was Massive) at the time, but still thought he was a hell of a showman and singer. Highlight was of course SWEETEST FEELING and HIGHER & HIGHER but at the time these were the only northern tunes he really sang. The people who booked artists back then weren't as clued up to audience wants back then, it would have been out of this world to have heard him sing the songs we all love, but no doubt he wasn't aware at the time with what we wanted to hear, and just did his hits, still a teasure memory though.

This was a common occurrence in the '70s particularly. I've lost count of the visiting acts I've seen who chose to perform "Knock On Wood" for the 1,000th time, or someone else's current big hit (something by Al Green or Stevie Wonder usually) - rather than their own much-loved material. You can't really blame them though, as their act was no doubt tailored to a typical American audience, with few of the artists ever having heard of the UK Northern Soul scene and having released only a couple of what they regarded as "successful" recordings (ie. things that sold well in the USA!).

Occasionally though an act was tipped off in advance and Mel & Tim at least included their version of "Free For All" alongside the obvious "Backfield In Motion" and their massive 70s hit "Starting All Over Again". :)
